Joss Whedon has long been a fixture in the geek community, thanks to his TV work on series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Of course, his notoriety exploded last year with the record-breaking success of Marvel’s The Avengers.

This led to Marvel signing him to write and direct the forthcoming sequel as part of an extensive three-year contract that includes overseeing all the studio’s Phase Two projects as well as starting up ABC’s planned S.H.I.E.L.D. (or is it Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?) TV series.

However, before that deal was struck – in fact, before The Avengers had even been released – Whedon had already began brainstorming what audiences would see in The Avengers 2, according to Entertainment Tonight. Here’s what he had to say:

“I didn’t think I was going to do the second one, but I had an idea for it before I figured out the first one … You go into a movie not assuming there’s going to be [a sequel]. I’ve seen plenty of movies that are the first part in a trilogy that never happened, and it’s terrible. You don’t save anything for the trip back. Having said that, though, I did think, ‘If they were to come back, I know what’s going to happen and it’s going to be awful.’”

Whedon’s approach to sequels makes sense from a storytelling standpoint. In fact, Christopher Nolan has said on numerous occasions that he approached his Batman films in a similar way. Yet, Whedon’s anticipation for where subsequent films may end up means that the conflicts and alliances formed in The Avengers were likely planting the seeds for further complications down the line. The clash between Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans) comes to mind as a plot thread that might develop over several films. Could Marvel be planning to bring the popular “Civil War” arc to life at some point?

As for The Avengers 2, we’ve already heard reports that death would be a significant theme, as indicated by the mid-credits scene featuring Thanos and his apparent glee at “courting death.” Couple that with Whedon’s admission that the sequel will feature a more personal threat to the Avengers, and it’s looking more and more likely like The Avengers 2 will be The Empire Strikes Back of the series, as far as a more downbeat, darker ending is concerned.

Whatever Whedon has planned, his role in Phase Two will ensure that the preceding solo films properly set the stage for the team’s reunion in The Avengers 2.

“I’m actually really excited. I’ve gotten to look at everything and see behind the curtain on all the stuff, and Kevin Feige has a very clear vision. And it runs through all these movies. They’re all very different, but they really are what the next story should be. So I’m very excited about it.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will reportedly set the stage for a potential shifting of loyalty that will pay off in The Avengers 2, which Whedon said begins shooting in February 2014. It’s quite possible that some tragedy may strike the Avengers, leaving the team in disarray by the sequel’s end. At this early stage, however, this is pure speculation.

What “awful” events do you think the Avengers will face in the sequel? Would Marvel go so far as to kill off one of the core heroes? Will Robert Downey Jr. retire after all? Sound off in the comments section below with your hopes and expectations for The Avengers 2.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014, The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.

  1. When I saw “shifting of loyalty” my mind immediately went to the Black Widow. Now I’m a huge Black Widow fan, and I loved the way she was portrayed in both Iron Man and the Avengers. She’s set to be in the second Captain America movie along with Hawkeye. Bucky returns as Winter Soldier, and if you’re a fan of the comics you know that Black Widow and Winter Soldier had a relationship. Could she be turning to the dark side? I sure hope not, and I hope they don’t do anything with that relationship, mainly because of my love for Clintasha (Clint/Natasha). All I know is that I can’t wait for all the new movies to come out!

    • I agree… please don’t skew the Clintasha relationship!

    • I don’t know if Hawkeye is in the winter soldier…

    • Somehow I’m getting the impression they’ll push her as Cap’s love interest instead. The hero always needs one(more than the sidekick anyway) and they can develop something with the ‘Old school virgin guy meets hot sexy modern girl’ shtick.

  2. Why does this somehow make me think they’re gonna make Avengers 2 an Episode V-esque film, with a BIG bad guy coming in from the first film with a close relationship to one character (Thor, or even if they put in some Guardians of the Galaxy) while also bringing in his pissed-off baddie friends (Chitauri) who were dealt a big slap in the face by the Super Six. All the while a relationship grows in the team (Hawkeye and Black Widow), a black guy comes in to kick in some more awesomeness (Falcon), and the end could have a twist (Iron Man is Hulk’s brother, Nick Fury is an alien) or a main guy getting captured by the alternate bad guys who are in allegiance with The Big Guy. i don’t know, it would be cool.

    • Iron man should get killed with iton patriot replacement

    • Please, just give them your ideas. Go ahead. Make it great (I am being sarcastic).

  3. You’re all a bunch of fat losers.

  4. Well now that I’ve seen Iron Man 3 I think Wheadon definitely has to do something to get Iron Man back into the armor after that ending. My bet, and hope, is that he kills off Pepper Potts in Avengers, and then Tony builds a new suit to “Avenge” his lost love.

    • Thats so mean, if that happens i think it will have the opposite effect. Why not have her as rescue.and rodney be in it. To back him up

    • I thought of some thing similar, but Pepper had an extremis dose but she’s gotten stabilised, so the healing remains but she won’t blow up, or as I like to say she isn’t so hot anymore, maybe there’s gonna be an attack on Rodhney, iron patriot, or they’ve captured pepper

      • i wouldnt want them to capture pepper…. again, you see cause thats what happened in IM3 they got to pepper and he had to come to rescue her… i just think itll be a lil bit boring if they do it again…and anyways they never said tony wasnt going to stopbeing in the armor

  5. My biggest wishes for TA2 is.
Thanos is enough strong to do almost what ever he wants. Example below idea and short move story what will be excited to watchin TA2. Main events below.
Kill Black Widow, Hawk Eye, Break Caps Shield and Kill The Owner, Kill with the one punch Greeny Guy,Iron Man secriface his life with the risky plan to stole infinity glove of Thanos, Thor run! once again he needs help of his brother to resurect all hereos. TA3 = KILL THE THANOS USEING thanos ONE WEAKNES HES LOVE “DEATH”
    Story ends or not? :)

and i know my english is poor or even worse

    • didn’t we see this in the crappy Xmen 3 movie?

  6. Hm… As a big Marvel nerd, this is very thought provoking to me. I know they’re adding Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to the team,, although I don’t know if this is official or not. Since these two are the children of Magneto, I could definitely see a bit of backstabbing happening. I must admit I haven’t read any comics with Quicksilver or Scarlet Witch in them, so I don’t know if they side with their father. I think those two would be a very good way to have Wolverine join the Avengers, but, of course, X-Men (and Spiderman) are owned by a different company and this dream will probably never become a reality. I don’t even know if they’re allowed to mention that Magneto is their father due to this. I think the choice of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch wasn’t the best choice Whedon could have made, since they aren’t as well known as others. I think it would have been cool if they threw in a Daredevil, Dr. Strange, Deadpool, or even Fantastic Four appearance, although the F4 would probably not be a very wise choice since the two F4 movies were not fan favorites.
And, on the question if Tony Stark is done as Iron Man, I don’t believe that for a second. I don’t think Marvel will let Downy slip away, and at the end of Iron Man 3 we hear “I am Iron Man” and “Tony Stark Will Return”. If Tony Stark IS Iron Man, and Tony Stark will return, that means Iron Man is gonna come back, and I have no doubt Robert Downy Jr. will be in the suit. :)

    • They can’t use Daredevil,Deadpool,or Fantastic Four all three are owned by others. Although Marvel might be or has gotten back Daredevil

  7. I think the Skrulls are comming to invade while they fight Thanos.

  8. I think the personal threat will be the Hulk goes crazy and kills some of the weaker heroes. Like Black Widow, Hawkeye, or Captain America.

    • captain america weak? in his own way he is just as crucial ti the avengers as the hulk!

  9. I actually still think the Civil War was one of my favorite story lines in the Marvel Comics. And it would totally work with the grounded, “realistic” world they have given us. And it would def happen in real life.
    *Comic SPOILER* (just being thorough)
I think if they do that then they need to have it be the final Avengers film though with cap’s funeral being the final scene.

    • I dunno. The Marvel Cinematic universe is actually a lot more optimistic than its comic counterpart.

Superheroes are extremely popular and embraced by the public rather than being hated and distrusted like the mutants in the X-Men movies. Moreover Captain America here is more of a pro-government guy while Tony Stark is firmly anti-establishment.

Without some major changes it would be hard to recreate the Civil War in the Avengers movies.

      • Well at the end of the Avengers you hear the politicians yelling “they did all this damage and where are they now!?”
they could easily twist it like they do everything else.
the govt is calling for the identities of the superheroes. and the public rallying behind the heroes. And with so much they are saying is going to change in the next few movies we could see a major shift in personalities in some of the heroes. You could see Cap lose faith in the govt and tony Tony suddenly want order because of the mass deaths of innocent. They could still do it. Itll just be dark

        • It’ll take till Avengers 3 or 4 just to make the changes necessary to make Civil War happen. The public mindset has to be changed, Captain America’s mindset has to be changed, Tony’s mindset has to be changed and many things about the world they live in(eg. The kind of people that are in power) need to be changed.

        • Which would be cool if they were able to include the entire Marvel Universe in the X-Men move vs the Sentinels Where the entire Marvel Universe joined forces to destroy the Sentinels and Characters were dying off.

Or, they could add in Wonder Man, Black Panther, Yellow Jacket & Wasp to the team to go up against Ultron.

Ultron V killed the Beast, Capt America, Wonder Man, Scarlet Witch.

  10. What about bringing in some of the X-Men to defeat Thanos thus starting the merging of the Marvel Universe.
So far the individual movies for the characters of Avengers have have had their crossovers or hints dropped but the fact that Avengers 1 took place in NY and Spidey wasn’t seen or the Fantastic Four…
I think that merging into One Universe will allow marvel to be more successful, purely from a business perspective you are talking about potentially an Ultra Mega Blockbuster if you bring in the X-Men franchise and the Spiderman and Avengers franchises onto the screen together.
I’m not saying A2 is going to do this but it will set the stages sort of like how IM1-2, Hulk 2, Thor, CA1 did.

  11. I don’t get that while Tony Stark is now virtually indestructible like Rodgers and Banner, that he’d retire or die. When Captain America eventually gets shot, he dies… Not the same for superhuman Extremis Stark. Hulk cannot control his superpower, not the same for Stark who has full control. Iron Man is Captain America and Hulk combined with advanced weaponry. He’s no longer the talker, he can walk all over the other Avengers if he wanted, and Rodgers wouldn’t last a minute one-for-one with Stark outside of his suit. I think Civil War is vital, but has anyone else noticed a seriously unaddressed issue in the universe. Who is JARVIS, and how does he work? In the movies he can calculate things, has a sense of humour and advises Tony from time-to-time. HOW? How can that not be a problem? ULTRON, anyone? With JARVIS technology, and Arnim Zola’s life model decoys, we have the grounds for Pym to create Ultron.

  12. Tony can never be killed, this would hurt the whole franchise. Robert is Tony, he brought him to life. this is what I FEEL when I watch these movies ans I’m a 52 year old black woman. GREAT JOB ME DOWNEY

  13. I think the civil war storyline would be great even if they incorporate spiderman in it. I say this based on how Marc Webb stated that he is following the “ultimate spiderman” story line (kind of) and that he hopes someday the two worlds could live in harmony or something like that. What a better way then to test Cap’s and Tony’s loyalty towards each other then to have an all out war with badass superheroes? And for the amazing spiderman 3, may e in the civil war the skulls can invade earth and the venom symbiote hitches a rice to earth and posses spidey in midst of the battle. Just ideas but they would be cool if somehow they were incorporated.

  14. PLEASE ive wanted them to do civic war ever since i read it and we all found out they are doing a movie universe, the beginning of the war, Nitro blowing nc or something like that can be cause a different way something more relevant to todays worries but the main argument over superhero registration should remain!!!

  15. At the end of iron man 3 stark had removed extremis from Potts and removed his arc reactor from himself. This sets stage for him perfecting extremis but leaves open that he might need to be replaced. This is when he decides to make ultron his. New replacement. Lame as that sounds ultron would rise and see that there is no hope for mankind and begins an extermination slowly neutralizing each avenger one at a time. Stark decides that it is up to him to destroy his New toy with the help of dr primm to help develop new armor. This is when new avengers can be added.

    • Sorry, but Pym isn’t in AOU but I think that story you came up with could work.

IMO: I see Banner and Stark (as they were chilling together at the end of IM3) could start the whole thing off with them talking bout what they should do now and Banner suggesting a new robotic replacemtent, thus giving Stark the idea and he starts working on it, Rhodey is off on a mission and Capt warns Stark off what he’s doing. Stark being stark, does it anyway and starts to build Ultron. Ultron works jut fine but something happens and he starts to go bad, Stark doesn’t realise and ends up taken out of the fight for a while, Ultron goes really bad and the team are re-assembled to solve the crisis. Stark can’t stop Ultron because he designed him to not be stopped in case something were ever to happen to Pepper and Stark was threatened with her death if he didn’t neutralize the greatest protection to earth. Thor comes back after whatever happens in Thor 2 and Rhodes is sent in to help out. It’s at this point where we meet Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, they are young heroes who have witnessed and slowed down Ultron for a time, S.H.I.E.L.D know about them and allow them to “help” find and stop him, the Avengers fight him and nearly end up wholly defeated but Quick and Scar come and help out. Stark is still not getting suited up yet, however when Jane Foster is captured and Pepper, using one of the broken suits left over from IM3 decides to rescue her and also gets captured, he is left with no choice and blends the Extremis virus with a new armour (or the Asgardian Armour)to create the Bleeding Edge armour and with this new force the whole of them, including Quick and Scar save the day.

Sorry it’s so long, but yeah, what do you guys think???

      • Not really what I seee. you side-cut Hulk’s involvement to a minimum, and where is the Hawk, and Dr. Selvig? As well as Maria Hill, and Ultron?

  16. They probs kill tony because they said arno stark mite replace him in iron man 4
