Elizabeth Olsen Scarlet Witch Rumor The Avengers 2: Elizabeth Olsen to Play Scarlet Witch

[UPDATE: Trades Confirm Olsen is in Talks for Scarlet Witch]

The Scarlet Witch character isn’t making an appearance in next year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past despite her brother Quicksilver having a small part to play, but Joss Whedon has big plans for the pair in The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

While there remains many questions and mystery surrounding the interest in including the character(s) in both the X-Men and Avengers franchises from rival studios, Bryan Singer’s take on half of the duo has already been shot with Days of Future Past wrapping production this week. For Joss Whedon and The Avengers 2, they’re still in the casting process.

From the sheer amount of buzz and headlines raised from Aaron Taylor-Johnson about being in talks with Marvel Studios about playing Quicksilver for The Avengers sequel, it seems all but confirmed that he will play the speedster. As for his sister, earlier reports had Saoirse Ronan being used as a design template for Scarlet Witch with the young actress even expressing her interest in working with Whedon.

The latest rumor is therefore a little strange, with Bleeding Cool claiming that their sources reveal that Ronan was offered the gig but turned it down. Why would she do such a thing? The source continues to explain that Marvel has instead turned their attention towards up-and-coming star Elizabeth Olsen, another proven talent who’s making the jump from indie fare to mainstream studio flicks next year with Godzilla.

UPDATE: THR confirms Olsen is in talks for the role.

Both names are incredibly talented and proven to be so and if the decision is truly one or the other, it’s a good problem to have for Whedon and co. The one key difference however is that the same report which initially tapped Ronan for the role explained that for the sake of the Marvel Cinematic Universe the origins of Pietro (Quicksilver) and Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) would be altered to make them British.

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch Confirmed for Avengers 2 The Avengers 2: Elizabeth Olsen to Play Scarlet Witch

Not only would the “brother-sister act” not be the children of X-Men villain Magneto and of Eastern European descent, but they could even have the source of their powers changed since there are complicated rights issues between Fox and Marvel both being able to use the characters in their films. From Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s words, the Quicksilver character will still be all about super speeds, but for Scarlet Witch and her over-powered abilities, there remains a big question mark and it depends on just how deep into crazy Joss Whedon wants to go with the franchise. By that we mean Scarlet Witch can alter reality but we’re unsure of whether or not that sort of plot element would be introduced this soon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In any case, if the origin rumors are true, Olsen obviously isn’t British (Ronan is Irish, Johnson is British) so would that entail a fake accent, a lack of accents from the pair, or something else entirely?

Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and unannounced films for May 6 2016, July 8 2016 and May 5 2017.

  1. Good actress.

    • +1
All there is to say from me too!

  2. I still worry that these cast members will take away from much needed scenes of Cap, Hulk, Thor and Iron man together!

  3. Somewhere Ben Kendrick is losing his mind ;)
She would be a good choice, and I think Aaron Johnson would make a great Quicksilver.

    • You can tell who are the screen rant underground listeners are. :)

      • We had the same joke in our email thread behind the scenes :)

  4. Ronan would have to put on an accent too, unless they’re cool with one English and one Irish, which would be weird.

I dunno, I think Saoirse would still be perfect for it and Olsen could probably work a Carol Danvers kind of role instead.

Wouldn’t it be cool if Scarlet Witch’s powers were shown and just for a few seconds, her alternate reality shift causes us to see Marvel characters owned by Sony or Fox on screen during a Marvel Studios production?

    • “alternate reality”…hee-hee, and all of a sudden we realize that Scarlet Witch is really Dr. Strange in drag!!!! {~~hey, that ain’t canon!~~}

    • Ronan has never used her own accent in any movie she’s been in. She’s used American, English, Scottish, Polish and German accents.

  5. How’s Netflix, Rob? :)

    • Won’t know till tmr ;)

In Boston for a set visit (and I can actually say that this time!)

  6. Oh yeah, Ben Kendrick must be praying that this news is true. ;) To be honest, I don’t believe I’ve seen Elizabeth Olsen in anything. But having listened to SR Underground’s discussions about her, she sounds like a good actress. Very interested to see where this rumor goes…

    • I thought she was really good (surprisingly so even) in Liberal Arts but most would probs suggest her in Martha May Mwhatever which I’ve yet to see.

    • The world will know next year from Godzilla! (Assuming her performance stands out in a movie like that)

    • Well, wish I could say I seen Elizabeth Olson in nothing…….(c’mon, I know some of you are trying really hard not to smile at that…).

  7. I enjoy her as an actress and I feel she can play the part very well. I still would of liked to see Emilia Clarke but that is just my wish haha

    • Yes. It’s just yours. Clarke is a terrible actress. She does not deserve to be one of Marvel’s most compelling characters.
Aidan Gillen, on the other hand, would make a fantastic Dr. Strange!

      • Yep, I’m still on that “Gillen for Strange” bandwagon myself. I just hope Marvel sees it too. He looks the part and he’s a fantastic yet little known actor so that’s more reason for them to grab him while they have the chance.

      • Your nuts saying Clarke is a terrible actress. Nuts, my second favorite character of GOT, she pretty much saved the 3rd season for me.

I dont want her for Scarlet Witch but I wouldnt mind if she was.

Olsen or Ronan would be great additions to the MCU. Aaron Johnson as well.

  8. I can wait to see her in ”Godzilla” first

  9. I don’t know. If it were me I would have cast Cam Gigandet as Quicksilver and Scottie Thompson as the Scarlet Witch. They seem to better fit the comic book representation of them.

    • Scottie Thompson is underrated, unlike Elizabeth Olsen.

      • I am not that familiar with Elizabeth Olsen as an actress but you are right! Scottie Thompson is underated. She has a very exotic look to her and is statuesque. Olsen and even Ronan seem too youthful to me. Are they supposed to be married to the Vision? Ronan is only 19 and even though Olsen is 24 she is only 5’5″ so she looks very young.

        • So height and youthful looks prevent a good actor/actress from being cast in something?

This is why I think those who complain that Hugh Jackman is too tall to play Wolverine or Tom Hardy was too short to play Bane need to get a life and get some fresh air because it’s about the acting and whether they can pull it off, not “oh, we need to find a hairy 5’3 guy to play Wolverine, who cares if he can act”.

Plus having someone as young as these actresses not only helps boost their fledgling careers with a high profile blockbuster guaranteed to be seen by billions, it also helps Marvel because these actresses will still be young in a decade if the character sticks around that long.

          • For you to say that height should not be an issue is laughable. If either Hugh Jackman OR Tom Hardy were 5 feet tall…I don’t care how good they act it would not have been acceptable. In fact I still think that Tom Hardy was not the best choice. If its just acting ability that we should look at then let’s cast Oprah Winfrey to be the Scarlet Witch.

I don’t care how old they are … in fact as long as they look the appropriate age then the younger the better. In this case Ronan looks like a teenager. She JUST portrayed one in the movie Byzantanium. Should they be casting a teenage Scarlet Witch?

            • President Obama for Scarlet Witch!!
              **Has acting ability**
              **Alters reality**
              President Obama for Quicksilver!!
              **Never has stopped running**
              **About the fastest guy around**

              • I don’t think Tea Party members should be casting movie roles.

                • Everything he said was on point…

        • I think I read some where the producers did want to make them both younger. But I don’t remember why. So no, I don’t think she will be married to vision any time soon lol.

          • That is interesting. I suppose it makes some sense since Magneto is a contemporary of the other Avengers so it would be logical that his children are younger. But at the same time it could make introducing the Vision anytime soon problematic.

    • I thought Cam would have been good also I believe Alex Pettyfer could have done a good Quicksilver

      • Agree about Pettyfer.

      • Also agree on Pettyfer.

      • Yes, Alex Pettyfer can be a good Quicksilver. Can’t see Aaron Johnson in that role. Also, Cam Gigandet should be Flash Thompson!

      • Alex Pettyfer’s ego would Threaten to implode the Marvel cinematic universe!

  10. i cant see Elizabeth Olsen and son of coul being an item, if she is in fact “the cellist” that they mentioned in The Avengers.

    • Maybe they were just “fiddling around” with that line???

  11. If this report is true, disappointed that Saoirse Ronan will not be the Scralet Witch.

However, Elizabeth Olsen is just as good a choice.

  12. I’d probably vote for ronan over Olson (kind of–I don’t know–”looks the part” more?). However, even though I am really not super-familiar with these gals (except in lustful fantasies, don’cha know?), I will take the words for it from you other commentators who know them perhaps better than I that either could probably do the job. I am just glad we have Quicksilver and SW in this flick; wish we had Wasp and Goliath as well. Maybe someday….!!!

  13. Elisabeth Olsen > Soarise Ronan

Her performance in Martha Marcy Mae Marlene was amazing. And Silent House was surprisingly good, too. Im totally on board with this!

    • Yeah MMMM was a great movie. The direction really put you in the state of the character. And she was good too.

I imagine they’re going to create a mentally fragile Wanda in order to explain Quicksilver’s over protectiveness. It makes perfect sense with her powers too. Just what I think. They’ll never find an actress to match Scarlet Witch’s physical appearance in the comics (as for most characters, but she’s a “standout”). They would be smart not to try. Elizabeth Olsen could be perfect.

  14. A lack of accents?

    There’s no such thing.

  15. Either way.

  16. I did not read the whole thing. But I thought that Xmen and Avengers were not allowed to use the same characters due to copyrights. Marvel may own both franchises, but they went to Fox for Xmen and Fantastic Four, and Sony for Spiderman, and Disney now owns everything else. They would have had to work out some kind of awesome deal for this to work.

    • Maybe you should try reading the whole thing then. In fact, there have been multiple articles and discussions of this issue.

  17. How can you turn down a role like that ? :o

  18. That picture makes her look like she has Maggie Gyllenhall syndrome. Woof.

  19. Awesome news if true. Never really liked Saoirse Ronan for the role anyway.

  20. I don’t know how he’s going to re-write their origins. No brotherhood of mutants, no magneto, no eastern european ancestry… not to mention the relationship Wanda has between Pym/Vision/Ultron/Wonder Man/Jocasta.

How will they get their powers, in the Marvel filmworld heroes are either made (stark/cap) or aliens (thor), they are not born (mutants). So, they will be made then… how?

created by ultron? infected by the tesseract? trained by Hydra? There’s obviously a British connection… are they only British because they’ll film at Pinewood Studios, England?

They could also believe they are humans but infact are unaware their half-alien, like kree, inhumans, asgardians.

    • “They were born with their powers.” Period. Done. Notice I never used the word “mutant.” Crisis averted.

    • @Pitt Man
These are the questions that haunt my nightmares lol ;)
…Seriously though, I’m wondering the exact same thing.

  21. Leave it to corporate executives and lawyers to a$$ things up for story lines.

I guess it’s safe to say there will never be a big Marvel mash up story.

Still, if Marvel would do what DC is doing, we’d have some terrific animated films that could really do service to stories like House of M or Mesiah Complex.

    • Actually, Big Hero Six is comming out next year. It may not be sequels to ultimate avengers 2 or planet hulk, but its animated so it counts.

  22. If you have to completely change the character, ie the origin and powers, then why not just make your own characters, instead of pretending that you are using already established characters from the comics?

    • They should do that with wolverine. Give him a new name, tweek his orgins a little bit ( super soldier test subject). Using a new form of vibranium giving him powers like wolverine. Creating a character is different from using one that already exists.

    • Im sure Fox is open to collab. But I’d bet that the studio from them all that is less open to share universe is none other than Marvel.

marvelites complain over and over about Fox and Sony, but they probably dont have any clue about who Marvel really thinks regarding the other studios and they are the ones saying “No”.

      • They complained about a company they actually struck a deal with(SONY)???

  23. So far everything I’ve been hearing is a bad idea for Avengers 2;

    No Ant-Man
Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver being forced in to try and connect it to ‘Days of Future Past’
Ultron being created by Iron Man
Focus of the movie being on Black Widow and Hawkeye

    • Where did you get that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were being forced in to connect with DOFP? There is no connection at all. That’s what this entire discussion is about, lol. Singer is using a different actor for Quicksilver, and using the original origin of the Character. Whedon is creating an alternate Quicksilver that has nothing to do with the X-Men, and using a different actor. How is the connecting them?

  24. If you’re going to have a character play Scarlet Witch you need a look alike. I believe “Sanaa Lathan” would be a good pick. She was terrific in Alien vs Predator. And why not reintroduce the original “Giant Man” He featured often in the early Marvel Avenger comics?

  25. I just cant seem to make myself care at all for these nee character inclusions. We barely got enough cool interactions with the tier 1 avengers in the original. Sigh. Its no secret the big reason they’ll be introed if for new FX candy as their powers are different from the rest.

  26. Its about time we see some real female Super hero’s and characters. others I would love to see on film Female Lycans in Underworld, Female Predators, Female Engineers in Prometheus sequel, She-Hulk, Marvel woman, Spider woman, and more story from the X-MEN Female characters. I like seeing the male hero’s but come on lets see them working together. Also with the female characters and males for that matter they all do not have to be super powerful just to see them pulling strings or detailed powers can really make them stand out.

  27. Summer Glau!!

  28. I’ve fallen Head over Heels for this girl, so Hell Yeah is what I have to say.
