avengers age ultron title The Avengers 2 is Titled The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Marvel showcased footage from their upcoming Phase 2 movies Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy at the studio’s 2013 Comic-Con panel. However, it was all buildup to the final reveal: the official title for writer-director Joss Whedon’s sequel to The Avengers, which is… wait for it… The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Whedon took the stage in Hall H at the conclusion of Marvel’s Comic-Con panel, in order to introduce a brief teaser for the second Avengers movie, which is also the final installment in Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The preview included material from the first Avengers film, spliced together with new footage (showing a man approaching an unidentified temple) and the reveal of CGI images that form Ultron’s face – followed by the official logo, which is featured as the header image for this article.

[UPDATE: Whedon has revealed that Ultron will get a new origin story in the Avengers sequel.]

Ultron, for those not familiar, is a Marvel villain who was introduced back in the 1960s. The character – originally identified as Ultron-5, the living automaton – is the creation of Henry Pym (a.k.a. Ant-Man), a robot who developed self-awareness and intelligence, but then formed an intense hatred for its “father” and evolved into a supervillain.

The Avengers – in printed form – have fought multiple upgraded versions of the dangerous robot, over the decades since the character’s inception in the comic books. As far as his general qualities are concerned: Ultron customarily possesses super-human intelligence and data-processing capabilities, among other “powers” that make him a formidable opponent for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Avengers: Age of Ultron, so it seems, will therefore be Hank Pym’s introduction to the MCU, before the character gets his own standalone feature in 2015 with Ant-Man: the first installment in Marvel’s Phase 3. Whedon using the character in his Avengers sequel script would also set the stage for the filmmaker to include Janet van Dyne/Wasp in the film, given her connections to Pym (she previously came close to making the cut in the first Avengers movie).

Similarly, assuming that Ultron’s origins are not significantly changed or altered for Whedon’s film, this means that Avengers: Age of Ultron should be the third Earth-based adventure in Phase 2, after Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That appears to be the case, given the previously-established importance of the Captain America sequel in the overarching story in Phase 2 (according to the previous reports on that subject) – and thus, the expectation is that Cap’s new adventure will place down the immediate groundwork for an Avengers reunion.

Iron Man 3 releases on DVD and Blu-ray on September 24th, 2013.

Meanwhile, Thor: The Dark World opens in theaters on November 8th, 2013, followed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4th, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1st, 2014The Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1st, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6th, 2015, and unannounced films for May 6th, 2016, July 8th, 2016 and May 5th, 2017.

wow, cannot wait. kinda wondering now this might be tonys work and not hanks. ultron is coming and its going to be amazing. right now, DC need to prove themselves so this marvel stuff is the best stuff.

they tried to make a worlds finest twice before. i jsut hope this is different and i cannot get fully behind it untill it comes. but they are definitely on the right path.

  2. Could Vin diesel possibly be playing ultron?

    • he did the voice of the Iron Giant, another famous robot, it is good thinking

    • If he’s getting what he always dreamed of, he’ll be Vision, the underlings/’son’ of Ultron :)

    • Voicing him has been my guess.

  3. Who here thinks Tony will be building Ultron?

    • What if Bruce Banner built him?

      • He can play a part in it. I don’t know how they’re going to introduce Pym and Ultron all in one movie, so since Stark threw away his suits, he may have created something to sort of take his place. Or something like that.

      • Reed Richards? Oops, wrong set of tinker-toys for this studio….

  4. Sooooo…they’re adapting Marvel’s crappy 2013 crossover??

    • no

    • Tying into the modern comic storylines loosely but not directly, hoping they boost comic sales with brand recognition no doubt. But it is Whedon’s take and he’s probably just using the character and all this is not a direct adaptation of the comic since they dont have rights to X-Men characters like Skrullverine

      • According to the press release, they are adapting Bendis’ story.

        • According to Feige, they’re only using the title.

    • Isn’t Ultron from Dr. Who??

  6. Only reason anyone even knows that alot of the events from phase one took place at the same time is because there was a comic book that led up to avengers that
Explained it. Before that overzealous fans were just taking guesses and websites were just merely speculating.

    • Well, the fact that, in IM2, there were screen showing the Hulk’s rampage at the university and the Thor crater, as well as Coulson saying he’s heading off to New Mexico, I don’t think it was THAT much of a stretch to assume those movies take place at the same time.

  7. So the idea I posted here on Screen Rant ages ago could come true?

That idea, for those who forgot, was that Pym would build Ultron, find himself arrested at the end and given the option to work for SHIELD instead of going to jail with his solo outing showing his work as part of SHIELD.

    • I believe they’ll make Tony Stark build him. Or they’ll do a collaboration effort. Banner, Pym, and Stark. That’s reason enough to bring the team together. Either way, I hope Pym will be involved. If not, people will be pissed.

      • I’m not gonna believe Stark will build him until I see it in the movie.

I mean, the Senator in IM2 worried about people making their own Iron Man suits, Pym’s built his own named Ultron, it goes rogue due to it being a drone rather than a suit.

Banner and Stark don’t need to be the creative brains behind it, just Pym on his own. Then Ultron’s defeated, Pym’s arrested, ultimatum, Ant-Man movie.

        • Marvel has made it known that they aren’t scared to change things. I’m not going to say Stark will do it forsure, but I can’t see Pym & Ultron being setup in this movie, and then Ultron being a villain this quickly. It would’ve been more believable if Ant-Man’s film was before Avengers 2

          • Don’t need to set it up for much of the movie, all they’d need to do is have this “rogue drone” causing mayhem and while some of the team are busy trying to stop it, SHIELD agents investigate where it came from so you got two subplots going on.

The main villain and then the search for Pym, finding him and discovering why they can’t take him down so easily (possibly use vibranium instead of adamantium as the main alloy he’s made out of, neat little tease at Black Panther).

Doesn’t need a 90 minute back story at all. Just unfold the details over the running time. Ant-Man can then deal with Pym after joining SHIELD (Avengers 2 button could be Fury showing him his Ant-Man suit).

            • Yeah I guess. As I’ve been thinking about it, it shouldn’t be too difficult. Introducing just Pym as Pym would be the best choice. Have him already working on Ultron or whatever, and they can have him suit up in his solo film.

              • I wouldn’t even say “show Pym working on Ultron”.

Have Ultron already out and causing havoc at the start of the movie. Introduce Pym as his creator midway through the movie, explain through quick flashes as he narrates exactly what happened, end scene and show the other half of The Avengers trying to stop Ultron trashing a city block.

                • Yeah that’ll work. I also don’t see how it will be reason enough to bring all of them together again. Where is Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch coming from? Why would Banner return, and how would Thor even be aware?

                  • Why is Ultron reason enough for them to get back together again?

No clue, might have to ask Joss Whedon there, along with other comic book writers that made him enough of a threat that The Avengers had to team up to stop him. That’s one thing I’ve never understood, why some villains need the whole team and others don’t.

No idea about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch either, they weren’t even rumoured for the MMU back when I brought up my “Ultron as the villain” idea.

                  • Wasn’t Thanos already confirmed to be in GotG and A2? All you need then is a believable way for ultron and Thanos (or rather; his henchmen) to attack the earth in the same 3 hours.

                • No no no……you guys don’t seem to be grasping how the Ultron story arc goes.

Ultron is hardly EVER the main protagonist, at least in the beginning. He is one of Pym’s security androids that goes haywire and becomes somehow self aware. He the builds a Synthoid to do his dirty work and pits it against the Avengers to test them and feel out the waters so to speak, looking for the best way to defeat them.

Ultimately it’s the Synthoid that defeats his creator because it was built off the same faulty programming as Ultron and manages to correct itself. So we will see Ultron fighting but not until the big battle at the end. Most of the battles will be between the Avengers and the Synthoid who will later become VISION.

          • They could have Tony indirectly help, if what remains of SHIELD (after CA:TWS) contracts Pym to create the Ultrons to take the human element out of certain facets of their organization after its been exposed to be vulnerable….it’d make sense that they might give him some Stark tech to scale-down the builds to human size proportions of these programmable machines he’s come up with.

But with or without Tony I think that’s perhaps the reason the Ultrons are created.

            • I agree Stark will have some hand in the project but as the end of IM3 he seemed pretty done with the whole thing.

            • I just want Ultron to say to Hank,’father’. ;-)

      • I agree with you: people would be pissed.

My guess is that the movie will introduce Pym (and Jan, don’t forget Jan!) as civilians. Maybe when Ultron shows up, SHIELD will track down who’s responsible for it, or maybe Pym himself will come forward when he’ll realize that his robot went rogue. Or again, maybe they’ll go by the book, and have Ultron erase Pym’s memory of having created him, but SHIELD will find him nevertheless.

I don’t think they should play too much with cannon. We saw what uprise it made when they messed with the Mandarin story in IM3… I thought it was a good movie, but most people who said it was crap said so because of the Mandarin part.

And I don’t get why Pym would be arrested. There was no time in the comics where he was even charged with anything concerning Ultron, to my knowledge…

        • @Mary Jay

Not sure he’d get arrested, it was just an idea I had a while back to explain to myself in my own weird logic why Pym would work for SHIELD if Ultron was the villain in Avengers 2.

Now, months later, Ultron really is the main villain in Avengers 2 and it makes sense to me how they’d transition from that to Ant-Man later that year.

Besides, the comics didn’t see Pym arrested but the movie could because his creation went rogue and cost lives. Enough reason to arrest him in my book which is where SHIELD would come in to offer him a job working for them and hence he becomes Ant-Man.

        • Yeah it’ll be best that they do nothing that drastic again. I’m sure they wont make that mistake again. And I don’t think Shield will contact Pym. How will they know he built Ultron? I think Pym will go to Shield himself.

          • Either he has a conscience and hands himself in, where SHIELD get to him, or they find him in his lab somehow.

Remember, they’re not under any government jurisdiction so considering that, I imagine they’re just as shady as assumed when Fury spoke to the panel of people in the first movie.

            • Yeah, well we’ll see eventually. I just hope this movie balances everything. I hope all the character drama Whedon promised delivers. We have to deal with the Scarlett Witch & Quicksilver, The Avengers themselves, and Pym and Ultron, with the possibility of Janet.

        • I say have Pym build Ultron for the corrupted SHIELD during Cap2. The Ant Man suit is also built for them. Have him join the team with Janet half way through the movie along with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to counteract Cap2′s where allegences lie plot. Oh, and Vin Diesle should be the Vision in Ant Man

          • You want SHIELD to give Pym his suit? What is this, that new horribad Spider-man animated show?

That completely guts the character and his OWN discovery of “the Pym particle”. Please read up on your canon.

            • @Mongoose – I HATE that Ultimate Spider-Man show & the new Avengers cartoon is also a joke. They seem to think that kids can’t wrap their heads around more complex themes & plots.

      • Wasnt that in EMH? Stark and pym designed it together. Starks robotics and pym’s programming. To use the ultrons as guards for the various super criminal prisons

        • yep. Could work exactly the same and makes total sense because I’m sure SHIELD has had issues trying to contain those supers they have captured. Probably don’t need to have multiple prisons but it still takes a huge effort to contain just one bad guy.

  8. This is awesome news (as I knew it would be). MARVEL is once again showing the world how to PROPERLY make CBMs. Not one CBM, but a series of them. Nuff Said!! No hate intended @ WB/DC. I loved MoS and their announcement of a Superman/Batman Team-Up has me very excited at the possibilities of a DC Cinematic Universe. But Marvel did it first (The shared Universe thing), they did it right (they brought the way print CBs are made to the film industry), and they did it their way (and it is WORKING!!). I’m so very impressed with them right now.

    • are you on comicbookmovie.com?

      Could’ve sworn I read this.

      • Yeah I posted the same thing on CBM.com. LOL

    • @ Askanison40

      That’s a understatement.

  9. The probably say tony built him since he is the headline of MCU. Poor antman no respect

    • He’s not headlining for much longer. He only has two more films left on his contract, and he may be leaving.

      • May be leaving is the key word. We will see about that once 70 million gets shoved on his face

  10. Awesome news.

  11. OMG!!! I’m actually both excited and scared about this!

Excited because … darn, Ultron!!! And usually, Ultron means Hank Pym!!! My personal opinion has always been that the character should be introduced before his solo movie, just to get the general public acquainted with him. I do hope that’s what they’re aiming for!

Scared, because I’m afraid they’ll go down another path, and make Ultron some part of Stark’s work, and change the origin of the character altogether, which I don’t think the fans would appreciate (and seriously, I like Tony just fine, but geez, give room to the other guys too. It’s The Avengers, not Stark and his Avengers ;-). And scared because maybe they’ll let the Avengers battle Ultron without knowing where the heck he comes from, and we’ll be introduced to Pym only in his solo movie… which would be a bad move because people could wonder if he’s actually a good guy or not, since he built Ultron…

Contrary to what others have suggested, I don’t think Vision will be in the Avengers 2, but that’s only a wild guess. I think Vin Diesel could be cast as Ultron… his voice would be good for the part.

    Looking forward to casting news!

  12. Maybe SHIELD contracts Hank Pym to build Ironman-style drones after the events in New York. If I remember correctly Selvig in THOR mentions Pym (not by name but as a fellow scientist who was later revealed to reference Pym) as someone who has “dealt with SHEILD before”.

  13. I don’t know why everyone believes Vin Diesel will be voicing Ultron. Ultron’s voice will be digitally enhanced no matter what. I don’t see why Diesel is needed for that.

  14. I’m gonna say JGL as Doctor Strange and Bradley Cooper as Ant Man will be introduced for this film

    • BOTH would demand WAAAAAAYY too much of the greenbacks for Marvel to bring them into a multi-picture deal!
YESS I know SR and others suggested JGL but I say that will NEVER happen!! Bradley Cooper would be a HORRIBLE choice for Hank Pym….
and JGL would be a bad choice for Strange as well, Marvel has not been wrong with ANY of their main actors and I don’t think they will get these 2 wrong either, AS LONG AS THEY DONT LISTEN TO YOU!

      • I do like Bradley Cooper joining the MCU….but for Strange, not Pym.

Plus Strange is one of the more standalone characters….so I think he’d be in a smaller amount of films then Cap/Thor/Ironman have been. See him get at least two films and at least one Avengers film, probably two.

        • Hey, I really like your idea. Bradley would make a nice scruffy Dr Strange!

          • Switch that up I’m going to say Joseph Gordon-Levitt for Ant-Man, Gerard Butler for Dr. Strange, and Vin Diesel for Ultron

  15. Brian Micheal Bendis is the worst thing to happen to Marvel.

    • + ∞

    • GOTG is not even done filming yet so why have a panel for them??? Do you think James Gunn is not that busy? or should take time off from filming to fly from England to SDCC???

He is just fine where he is at and does not need to waste time at SDCC, HE NEEDS TO FOCUS on making the best movie he can!!

      • There was a panel of Guardians of the Galaxy, actually. From all I’ve heard, it was pretty damn good with surprisingly great footage already.

    • Just go to YouTube and type guardians of the galaxy most recent and you’ll see the panel (sans movie footage unfortunately)

  17. just on a whim maybe they might use agents of sheild to introduce pym and to implement bits and pieces of ultron through the tv series.Iam sure some of the cast of the avengers will probably make some apperances in the show.would make sense and would probably be the easiest way since ant man dosent come out till after avengers 2.

  18. I’d like to know how Thanos and Guardians fits in all of this. Ultron is… an Earthling and a creation of man. Not aliens… uh…

I’m a bit confused about the direction they’re taking.

    • Guardians sets up that team, Nova Corps and more of the cosmic side. They might be needed when Thanos shows up in Avengers 3.

  19. Wait, what does this mean for Thanos?

    • I think they’re pushing him off till Avengers 3 as a grand finale since they couldn’t get Galctus,

But this is REALLY big, they would have to cross over Spider Man, Fantastic Four, Wolverine, just to do Age of Ultron.

I think they are also introducing Morgan le Fay as well. Maybe after the invasion and Ultron is destroyed, Thanos realizes how weak planet Earth is, and makes his attempt to steal the infinity gauntlet and invade Earth.

      That seems logical.

      • Then again, maybe Morgan le Fay is introduced during the conflict with Malekith the Accursed and Thor.

  20. Or are they setting this up for The Masters of Evil?

  21. Theyre just using the name ” Age of Ultron”
    The comic was too complicated.

  22. Where the glob is my Thanos?!!!!

    • Thanos will be coming to and play his part in Guardians of the Galaxy and I’m not kidding. Gamora (in the footage played on Comic-Con) was called by the name “The Step daughter of Thanos”

  23. Hank Pym doesn’t necessarily have to be Ant Man in Avengers 2 though right? He could just be a scientist who created Ultron, and then by the end of Avengers 2 he could say that he was researching a way to stop him, and mention something about shrinking to the size of an ant or something. That would lead into him working on it in Ant Man movie and becoming Ant Man.

That way, we introduce the character, which takes some pressure off the origin story, and we can save all the Ant Man action for the movie, rather than Avengers 2.

That’s my theory. Although, I haven’t read Hank Pym/Ultrons origin stories so I dunno how it all happens.

  24. Should be Avengers: Age of Vultron!

  25. Crazy… I wonder how this will all tie in with Thanos, if it does at all?

    • It wont. He wont even be mentioned until he becomes a universal threat (avengers 3). Hard to say, depends what happens in GotG. We’ll certainly see him there.

  26. This is awesome. I am a big DC fan but this sounds awesome. Edgar Wright’s film will Titin and bad things will happen Whedon said. Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

  27. I just need to may 2015 and ill be happy. Lol

  28. Look at banner, Michael! I know not much of this Ultron spoken of, but myself likes what sees.

  29. Good title, though not too original.
