Robert Downey Jr. on Iron Man Potentially Being Recast After ‘The Avengers 2′

iron man3 Robert Downey Jr. on Iron Man Potentially Being Recast After The Avengers 2

Robert Downey Jr. has become synonymous with Marvel hero Iron Man (A.K.A. Tony Stark) ever since the character’s first big screen appearance in 2008. The hero has since evolved into the most bankable and recognizable character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Downey’s contract with Marvel Studios expires after the upcoming Iron Man 3, leaving his continued involvement in the role up in the air.

Previously, Downey said that he would be hesitant to turn his back on the character. Of course, that statement was predicated on the continued high quality and warm audience reception to Marvel’s cinematic efforts, and after The Avengers, audience goodwill is surely at an all-time high for the studio’s second slate of films.

Now, in an interview with Empire (via Comic Book Movie), Downey has again responded to the possibility that he may eventually hang up his metallic hat:

“Let’s just say that the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it. There’s a little bit of soul reclamation going on. I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best. Sorry! The affinity with Tony now is: How do you sustain something? I’m not stupid, I like to play ball, I love the company, I love the character, and the business side of things, I’m not too picky about that either.”

Funny that Downey should mention the business side of things. The billion-dollar success of The Avengers gives him tremendous leverage in renegotiating his contract, should he choose to do so. However, he does seem far more at ease with the idea of letting someone else step into Stark’s shoes than in previous comments.

“[Recasting] would probably be the best thing in the world for me. You know, ego…but sometimes ego just has to be smashed. Let’s see what happens. I take the audience very seriously – I feel bad when I see folks doing movies and the audience is like, ‘Don’t do that anymore.’ I don’t have to overstay my welcome…”

If the actor bows out, Marvel would likely go the recasting route as the studio seems intent on keeping Stark around for a good long while (or at least through The Avengers 2). Kevin Feige had this to say about the character’s involvement in Phase Two:

“Tony’s going to carry on. ‘Avengers 2′ already has a release date!”

Audiences have thus far responded overwhelmingly well to Downey’s take on Tony Stark, and it could be argued that the actor is largely responsible for the success of Iron Man. So it’s largely in Marvel’s best interest to keep him onboard for as long as possible. We expect Downey to at least appear throughout Phase Two (potentially helping to kick off the cosmic side of things in Guardians of the Galaxy).

However, if he does decide to part ways with Marvel, who would you like to see step into the role? Let us know in the comments.

Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black, from his and Drew Pearce’s screenplay. It stars Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, William Sadler, James Badge Dale and the voice of Paul Bettany.

Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe begins when Iron Man 3 releases May 3rd, 2013, followed by Thor: The Dark World on November 8th, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4th, 2014, and Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1st, 2014. It concludes with The Avengers 2 on May 1st, 2015.

  1. without tony start iron man or avaranger movie and marvel stodio are nothing plzzz dont leave tony i am ur big fan

  2. I wouldn’t watch anyone but RDJ as Tony Stark.

  3. RDJ as Iron Man was the single thing holding me to the IM movies and even more so to the Avengers movies. Without him, I will most likely never be able to gather up near enough interest for it, sorry. If he is gone I truly think it will take a fatal hit. He ( no offense to the other great actors/actresses) is what drives the popularity and thereby the numbers- period.

  4. Honestly, if they recast Robert, I wouldn’t pay to watch the Avengers 2, The movie will be better with him. Not without him. But it is his choice if he wants to be re casted in the upcoming film.

  5. tara.warner9@wi.rr

  6. It is gonna be almost impossible to fill the shoes left by RDJ. He just portrays the character of Tony Stark so perfectly. I would obviously still go see it if they did replace him, but no one will replace the man in my heart as the real Iron Man

  7. If RDJ isn’t in the avengers 2 movie, I doubt I’ll go see it for any other reason than Thor. Iron Man and Thor are my two favorite avengers but mainly iron man. Without RDJ playing Tony, my interest would be cut in half. RDJ MAKES THE MOVIE. PERIOD!

  8. the avegers they are so coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooolllllllll but i like ironman and thor

  9. Without RDJ as Tony Stark, there will be an empty space in the movies. Too many people want RDJ, if he’s gone, so is 75% of the fan base.

  10. I wouldn’t go see a movie with iron man in theaters if they recast robert downy jr

  11. iron man has to get old doesnt mean they have to recast him plus they can still do the story of him getting old and rdj should not be recast!!!!!!

  12. How are you going to be a fan and not support the movie if he leaves ? Lol. Sure it’s a Heartbreak – I guess, but don’t complain about anything unless your putting your money in.

  13. Honestly RDJ is the best person for the role there paying him millions to act as him self EGO RDJ Tony Stark and iron man marvel at that wouldnt be the same with out RDJ

  14. Honestly RDJ is the best person for the role there paying him millions to act as him self EGO RDJ Tony Stark and iron man marvel at that wouldn’t be the same with out RDJ

  15. as Christian bale is the best batman so is RDJ the best iron man, without these two nothing can go on even justice league would fall without christian bale and avengers or iron man wouldn’t work without RDJ, because they are the best

  16. without rdj movie wont be good enough to see

  17. No one. RDJ is iron man.

  18. If RDJ isn’t in any upcoming Iron Man or Avengers movies, the movie theaters can kiss their $40 dollar ticket fee GOODBYE…. I won’t see it

  19. No he will be back for avengers 2 & 3

  20. Good news I’ve just heard that rdj will be in not 1 but 2 More avengers film

  21. RDJ will be in A2 & 3 but they won’t be a iron man 4

  22. No one… and i mean no one could ever, ever, ever replace Robert Downey Jr. As Iron Man. The whole appeal of Iron Man {Tony Stark} is his cynical humor… his bad boy act. I dont think anyone could ever fill those shoes. People generally give poor ratings because of a major character switch. I for one didnt rate the Hulk movies very high simply becasue of the man character is always different. Although i do like the hulk in the Advengers and think youve finally perfected the hulks charcter after all these years. But Robert Downey Jr. Is and will forever be Iron Man in everyones eyes… changing him now would only hurt the ratings and Marvel.

  23. I AM GOING TO KILL MYSELF IF THERE WILL BE NO IRONMAN 4

  24. Honestly, if they had to cast someone new as Iron man; I wouldn’t want them to recast Tony Stark. I would want them to create a new character to come in. The shoes RDJ — assuming he leaves — will be a very big role to fill, something that might be impossible to satisfy the viewers if Tony Stark is slated to stay as a character in the movies.

Best way to go about it, in my opinion would be to have another iron man film where the torch is finally passed. It had been hinted in at in previous movies that this is how it should be done — they wanted Iron man not Tony. Maybe Stark just finally decides he wants to be with Pepper and not out saving the world all the time. No on would blame him, I mean come on, Pepper needs some major love here.

Take that idea, put it in an oven, and cook it. You’ll still be leaving fans disappointed who love RDJ as Stark, but it would be a far, far better option to make a new character than just recasting Stark and possibly loosing the entire fan base because of choices made in recasting especially if it turns out that they were a poor choice. And hey maybe then it’d be easy to talk RDJ into guest appearances as Stark with Pepper on his arm.

  25. No RDJ, no marvel films will ever get near as much audience, success, or money. No RDJ = no Iron Man. No iron man = fail for marvel. Keep RDJ ias Iron man no matter what. He makes the films more than regular ‘sit back and watch at home before i go to sleep cause ive got nothin better to do’.

    KEEP RDJ

  26. Sad as it sounds eventually all great things must end. Like with Pierce Bronson as 007, nobody thought Daniel Craig could do the character justice after him, and some still don’t but after a few movies they either grow on you or they don’t … As for Iron Man , nobody will ever be able to fill the shoes of RDJ but with that being said RDJ will only get older and unless your Sylvester Stallone or Bruce Willis, don’t expect every actor to carry on forever into ther 60′s with one character, RDJ is Tony Stark he is Iron Man period, but the torch will eventually be passed on and at first we won’t like it especially since Hollywood has shown us before they can let us down with reboots and recast… Take this into consideration, I know different character different comicbook universe but remember Batman getting old and still being a major roll in the Batman Beyond series…?????

Every one cant be like Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis and carry a character into their 60′s… And every actor wouldn’t want to. And oh yeah Harrison Ford.

  28. Hi there! Do you know if they make any plugins to help with Search Engine Optimization?

I’m trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very
good gains. If you know of any please share. Thank you!

  29. I don’t see how anyone could play Tony Stark like Robert Downey Jr. I wasn’t even an Iron Man fan until he he became the new face of Iron Man. His personality for Tony Stark is too unique. If Downey decided to give up his role as Tony Stark it would be very sad, and the character would never be the same. But I believe that Downey needs to do what he feels is best for him. He’ll always be Iron Man to me :)
