Robert Downey Jr. on Iron Man Potentially Being Recast After ‘The Avengers 2′

iron man3 Robert Downey Jr. on Iron Man Potentially Being Recast After The Avengers 2

Robert Downey Jr. has become synonymous with Marvel hero Iron Man (A.K.A. Tony Stark) ever since the character’s first big screen appearance in 2008. The hero has since evolved into the most bankable and recognizable character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Downey’s contract with Marvel Studios expires after the upcoming Iron Man 3, leaving his continued involvement in the role up in the air.

Previously, Downey said that he would be hesitant to turn his back on the character. Of course, that statement was predicated on the continued high quality and warm audience reception to Marvel’s cinematic efforts, and after The Avengers, audience goodwill is surely at an all-time high for the studio’s second slate of films.

Now, in an interview with Empire (via Comic Book Movie), Downey has again responded to the possibility that he may eventually hang up his metallic hat:

“Let’s just say that the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it. There’s a little bit of soul reclamation going on. I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best. Sorry! The affinity with Tony now is: How do you sustain something? I’m not stupid, I like to play ball, I love the company, I love the character, and the business side of things, I’m not too picky about that either.”

Funny that Downey should mention the business side of things. The billion-dollar success of The Avengers gives him tremendous leverage in renegotiating his contract, should he choose to do so. However, he does seem far more at ease with the idea of letting someone else step into Stark’s shoes than in previous comments.

“[Recasting] would probably be the best thing in the world for me. You know, ego…but sometimes ego just has to be smashed. Let’s see what happens. I take the audience very seriously – I feel bad when I see folks doing movies and the audience is like, ‘Don’t do that anymore.’ I don’t have to overstay my welcome…”

If the actor bows out, Marvel would likely go the recasting route as the studio seems intent on keeping Stark around for a good long while (or at least through The Avengers 2). Kevin Feige had this to say about the character’s involvement in Phase Two:

“Tony’s going to carry on. ‘Avengers 2′ already has a release date!”

Audiences have thus far responded overwhelmingly well to Downey’s take on Tony Stark, and it could be argued that the actor is largely responsible for the success of Iron Man. So it’s largely in Marvel’s best interest to keep him onboard for as long as possible. We expect Downey to at least appear throughout Phase Two (potentially helping to kick off the cosmic side of things in Guardians of the Galaxy).

However, if he does decide to part ways with Marvel, who would you like to see step into the role? Let us know in the comments.

Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black, from his and Drew Pearce’s screenplay. It stars Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, William Sadler, James Badge Dale and the voice of Paul Bettany.

Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe begins when Iron Man 3 releases May 3rd, 2013, followed by Thor: The Dark World on November 8th, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4th, 2014, and Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1st, 2014. It concludes with The Avengers 2 on May 1st, 2015.

  1. Robert Downey Jr. played the part really well.He couldn’t be replaced easily.Well,if the time is already right, why not?Try reading the comics.Tony Stark will be replaced by his son.So that would be a perfect cut for his(RDJ) career as Tony. They should just wait for that perfect moment. And I think when that movie comes,I have a perfect Stark for that role.I would say Johnny Depp could play the part of Tony Stark’s son.I believe he would be perfect for that.

    • Johney Depp is older than RDJ.

      • johnny depp is just as expensive

  4. Ironman would f*cking suck without RDJ. He really IS Iron Man. Its like trying to assign a new Robert Downey Jr. to every movie RDJ movie. The role sticks with the person. Marvel, PLEASE do not ruin Iron Man and The Avengers 2! DONT MAKE US BEG.

    • Agree, RDJ is Ironman, he is the reason I even saw the movies.

    • I agree with you! Please don’t ruin and avengers 2! Iron man should always be Robert Downey Jr. I swear I will never watch iron man 4 if RDJ got replaced! :( it’s gonna be so boring for sure.

  5. I wouldn’t see the movie if RDJ wasn’t in it. No one else could fulfill his character. It wouldn’t be an Iron Man

  6. Pls don’t replace rdj he is the best artist that can play the role of iron man marvel is nothing without rdj

  7. RDJ is the best actor for the job. PLEASE DO NOT REPLACE HIM. Everyone knows that he is great actor. There won’t be any Iron Man without him.

  8. If RDJ does decide not to finish the franchise then I think they should have the smart kid that helped tony in IM3 take his place, representing Tony’s son. Just make another movie showing the kid as an adult and taking over the role of ironman. He was smart and it seemed as if tony already had a ” Father, Son” relationship with him.

  9. Love Iron Man and RDJ! My husband and I just watched 3 last night and it was AWESOME !! :) Hope he stays onboard and they make lots more !!!

  10. If RDJ stops playing Iron Man. Hang up Iron Man itself! I don’t want to see another actor try to fill the already “Gold Shoes” of RDJ.

  11. Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man, This saved his career, and cleaned him up and allowed him more roles in only one good film franchise Sherlock Holmes. If he doesn’t continue is role as Iron Man no one will see the film they will be so complete upset because we the fan base are expecting him. He plays this role so well, and to no have him in the role after Stan Lee the marvel man himself said, ” Robert Downey Jr. was born to play Iron Man/ Tony Stark, he is exactly what I have in mind.” Would be a slap in the face to the man who created the character. It would seriously break my heart to see someone else in this role, and to see actors who have been connected with him not have him there would be unthinkable.

  12. There is No ONE that could replace him. No one could do the things he did with Ironman! If this happens I am very sure that they will lose majority of their audience! ROBERT DOWNEY JR. Is the only person who can pull off Ironman! I will not watch any more of Marvels if he doesnt stay as OUR Ironman!

    • Not just Ironman, RDJ is perfect as Tony Stark. Can’t even begin to think of another actor that is of his caliber.

  13. There is No ONE that could replace him. No one could do the things he did with Ironman! If this happens I am very sure that they will lose majority of their audience over this! RDJ Is the only person who can pull off Ironman! I will not watch any more of Marvels if he doesnt stay as OUR Ironman!

  14. I said after the first ironman movie if Robert Downey jr. Ever pulls out they are screwed, and I still believe that. Not a soul could ever bring the same energy to the role, and let’s face it ironman is the most successfull out of the entire marvel movie venture, not one of the other actors from the Avengers line up has brought the same life to their characters as Robert Downey jr. has. Without him the entire thing is over. But if anyone is going to screw up that role I’d like it to be me!. I’d like to thank the academy…

  15. I like him playing Iron man, he breathed life into the character, I really can’t seen anyone else do it as well as him, he is Iron man. He closely, if not dead on resembles the comics. He is a great actor.

  16. i hope Marvel ReNews Robert Downey’s Contract for IronMan 4, i saw IronMan 3 and i liked it, if they Don’t ReNew it then they will have to get a Whole New Cast, Meaning No more G-Paltrow and Don-CH, if they replace Downey then who ever they get will Not be able to bring Big Number$$$, Even if Downey wants a lot of money they should give it to him…..i think IronMan 3 will make between $1.2 to $1.3 Billion Dollars WorldWide…

  17. no one could play the role of iron man/tony stark like robert downey jr can.

  18. There’s no way anyone could replace RDJ… He blew that role out of the water. I feel like if they try to replace him, and pretty much “milk” Iron Man, it’s going to cheapen the quality of the movie. I can’t imagine anyone would like seeing three fantastic movies be followed by something of lesser… I d’no, caliber? It’s almost like if RDJ decides to bow out, then that should be it. I know the industry is in it to make money… But I still feel like out of respect for the movies and the characters and the audience… It may be best to just leave on a good note. Quit while you’re ahead… Leave the memory of Iron Man as perfection rather than “the first three were amazing… But the rest were so-so”. Maybe I’m being pessimistic. But I can’t help it.

  19. No one could sub for RDJ’s interpretation of Tony Stark. That goes without saying. But I would be comfortable with a different take on it Keep the core character traits from the comics: Older, brilliant, at ease with corporate technocratic establishment yet with an idealist’s heart.

The rapid-fire RDJ witticism’s and reparte would probably have to go (or better, be off-loaded to another Marvel hero/actor). But with a competent enough actor, script and director you could absolutely fill the suit with another personality. It would be up to us to not keep looking for RDJ’isms when there aren’t any being delivered.

Ultimately, this might mean that Iron Man is relegated from “monthly” to “Giant-Sized Annual” status so to speak. Which is to say, his appearances are limited to Avengers movies only. He acts as their bankroll, heavy hitter and provider of wonderful toys (like in the comics), but he steps aside from regular movie duty. All the better to make way for other Marvel characters and keep things fresh on the big screen.

  20. No other actor can bring to the role of Iron Man/Tony Stark what RDJ brings. Johnny Depp is a favorite of mine & I think a fantastic actor but his screen presence & charisma is nothing like RDJ’s. To bring in another actor as TS/IM with all the other characters staying much the same would be a major misstep on the Studio’s part (worse than when Coke tried their “New Coke” & had to go back to the “Classic” Coke) – another actor just wouldn’t be TS/IM & the film would suffer for it. If you want a new IM then develop the storyline to the point that RDJ’s Tony Stark has a son old enough to take over the role & bring the audience along for the ride!

  21. I don’t know if I could watch Iron man without Robert Downey jr. He is perfect for the role, he is an awesome actor and lovable as tony stark. I can’t see anyone replacing him

  22. Hugh dancy would be good as a replacement for rdj but no reboot plz marvel Rdj is tony stark big boots to fill .im sure we see him in avengers 2 by then rdj will be pushing 50 I think then he might want to step down in ironman 4 as he will be 52 I can see his point

  23. Hugh dancy would be good as a replacement for rdj but no reboot plz marvel Rdj is tony stark big boots to fill .im sure we see him in avengers 2 by then rdj will be pushing 50

  24. IF THERE IS NO RDJ….THERE IS NO IRON MAN 4,5,6……RDJ IS NOT ONLY FAMOUS FOR HIS ROLE OR HIS CHARACTER AS TONY…..HE IS FAMOUS FOR HIS GREAT ACTING, CHARISMA ON SCREEN AND HIS SENSE OF HUMOR…..AND OF COURSE HIS LOOKS….
TRUST ME , IF RDJ GIVES ONN IRON MAN SERIES……IRON MAN WILL BE LIKE ANOTHER ORDINARY ACTION MOVIE…….THERE WILL BE NO MATCH FOR TONYz ROLE THAN RDJ….
AND OH YEAH MARVEL WILL BE AT HUGE LOSS IF THEY DON’T TAKE ROBERT FOR THIS ROLE AGAIN :)

  25. I think RDJ is the only one to play Ironman / Tony Stark…Its a shame how actors make so much money and forget what made them famous and rich. I think RDJ will be back in the Avengers and Ironman as it makes him more money than anything else and to be able to look back when he is 80 and for people to remember him in an Iconic role then that is true success..

  26. RDJ is the only person to play the role, the perfect person to play it, has played it the past movies. “Tony Stark (RDJ) is Iron Man”

  27. RDJ is the only and perfect Iron Man. He has played the part and the only one who has, to change it now would be crap. “RDJ is Tony Stark, Tony Stark is Iron Man”

  28. No one!!! If there’s no Robert Downey Jr then there should be no Iron Man. He’s made millions of people care about Iron Man, And if someone else steps into those shoes the fans will feel betrayed and let down I know I will

  29. I’d rather they end the Iron Man franchise than continue with out RDJ. Even if he doesn’t want to do Avengers 2, I’d rather they replace him with Iron Patriot than recast Iron Man
