Robert Downey Jr. on Iron Man Potentially Being Recast After ‘The Avengers 2′

iron man3 Robert Downey Jr. on Iron Man Potentially Being Recast After The Avengers 2

Robert Downey Jr. has become synonymous with Marvel hero Iron Man (A.K.A. Tony Stark) ever since the character’s first big screen appearance in 2008. The hero has since evolved into the most bankable and recognizable character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Downey’s contract with Marvel Studios expires after the upcoming Iron Man 3, leaving his continued involvement in the role up in the air.

Previously, Downey said that he would be hesitant to turn his back on the character. Of course, that statement was predicated on the continued high quality and warm audience reception to Marvel’s cinematic efforts, and after The Avengers, audience goodwill is surely at an all-time high for the studio’s second slate of films.

Now, in an interview with Empire (via Comic Book Movie), Downey has again responded to the possibility that he may eventually hang up his metallic hat:

“Let’s just say that the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it. There’s a little bit of soul reclamation going on. I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best. Sorry! The affinity with Tony now is: How do you sustain something? I’m not stupid, I like to play ball, I love the company, I love the character, and the business side of things, I’m not too picky about that either.”

Funny that Downey should mention the business side of things. The billion-dollar success of The Avengers gives him tremendous leverage in renegotiating his contract, should he choose to do so. However, he does seem far more at ease with the idea of letting someone else step into Stark’s shoes than in previous comments.

“[Recasting] would probably be the best thing in the world for me. You know, ego…but sometimes ego just has to be smashed. Let’s see what happens. I take the audience very seriously – I feel bad when I see folks doing movies and the audience is like, ‘Don’t do that anymore.’ I don’t have to overstay my welcome…”

If the actor bows out, Marvel would likely go the recasting route as the studio seems intent on keeping Stark around for a good long while (or at least through The Avengers 2). Kevin Feige had this to say about the character’s involvement in Phase Two:

“Tony’s going to carry on. ‘Avengers 2′ already has a release date!”

Audiences have thus far responded overwhelmingly well to Downey’s take on Tony Stark, and it could be argued that the actor is largely responsible for the success of Iron Man. So it’s largely in Marvel’s best interest to keep him onboard for as long as possible. We expect Downey to at least appear throughout Phase Two (potentially helping to kick off the cosmic side of things in Guardians of the Galaxy).

However, if he does decide to part ways with Marvel, who would you like to see step into the role? Let us know in the comments.

Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black, from his and Drew Pearce’s screenplay. It stars Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, William Sadler, James Badge Dale and the voice of Paul Bettany.

Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe begins when Iron Man 3 releases May 3rd, 2013, followed by Thor: The Dark World on November 8th, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4th, 2014, and Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1st, 2014. It concludes with The Avengers 2 on May 1st, 2015.

  1. Sadly, there’s really not an actor that could replace RDJ as Iron Man and not have an adverse effect on the property. Just look at Hulk, we’re on our third Bruce Banner in 3 films (9 years). That really hasn’t helped the Hulk property at all. Part of the reason for Marvel’s cinematic success was RDJ’s portrayal of Iron Man. I honestly felt that RDJ was Tony Stark come to life, for the first time EVER I felt Hollywood got it right…. not just right, nailed it perfectly. Based on the comments and the fact that IronMan is on his 3rd film and 4th film appearance I think most people feel that way to. Hopefully Marvel/Disney understands that when it comes time to sit down with RDJ and sign a new multi film contract.

    • hope there’s a like button for you pal

    • Charlie Sheen can do a good job

  2. I’m done if no RDJ… Why can’t studios keep with any continuity???

    • Its not always up to the studio. RDJ is human. He may be just tired of the roll.

  3. Deff need RDJ i remember watching iron man when i was younger n he was a lil stiff RDJ transformed him into the character he would be in real life and theres no changing that now like ledger did to joker they made it so relateable if you put yourself in there shoes and understand the psychology of the character…perfect thats all i can say n if he doesnt come back ill be greatly dissapointed

  4. How about Jeffrey Dean Morgan if RDJ no longe plays Iron Man? He could definitley pull it off…

    • Eh, seems like a decent suggestion. Could be better but still, it’s decent.

  5. the best thing about Marvel movies is they don’t change your main characters. if they change Iron Man actors it would just destroyed a whole story just look at what it did to the Batman movies in the ninety’s. please don’t let that happen to Tony Stark in Iron Man its to good of a movie

  7. It’s hard to see anybody else as Tony Stark. That’s like recasting Wolverine with the X-Men series. However, if Robert Downey Jr. decides he’s had enough, than Marvel would have no choice. They would have to get someone as smart, and humorous as Downey. Maybe John Laguzomos? (I know I spelled it wrong, LOL!)

    • I just threw up a little in my mouth when I read that. In no way, shape or form should THAT actor appear in a serious role.

John Leguizamo is far too much of a slap stick actor to take seriously. Don’t get me wrong, I loved ‘The Pest’ and his role in ‘Spawn’ but still, I cannot see him as Stark.

  8. rdj is very good and would be missed but he is human. I would love to see his replacement be a long lost son he never knew about and before he exits, he trains his son to take his place.

  9. Jimmy Piven would be a good replacement for Robert Downey Jr. If they had to get anyone else.

  10. If RDJ choose to say no to more movies, i would like them to kill him of rather then replace him. Let cap be the new front person and get some new avengers in the team.

  11. If RDJ calls it quits please do not recast just kill his character off because we dont need another Batman.

  12. if they replace the actor for tony stark i wont be able to watch it! simples… his such a brilliant actor. you cant replace him.

  13. RDJ is Iron Man and nothing can change that period. Marvel is in a Catch 22. I know he cannot play Iron Man forever, but he created Iron Man and not the other way around. Once he leaves, if will greatly effect the revenue aspect of the franchise. I for one will lose interest if I cannot see RDJ as Iron Man. The same way with Tobey Maguire as Spiderman–Hulk– and so many others. I hope they took into consideration his contribution to the Avengers (from a revenue perspective), and plan on renewing his contract for as long as possible PERIOD!

  14. If RDJ doesn’t come back then I’m not going to the movies

  15. No RDJ no Ironman period

  16. Downey is the ONLY iron man. He cant be replaced. No one can be Iron Man like downey! If he’s not in Avengers 2 what’s the point in going to see it? Yeah everyone elsr is there but it will not be the same without Downey!!!

  17. Downey is the ONLY Iron Man. He can’t be replaced. No one can be Iron Man like Downey! If he’s not in Avengers 2 what’s the point in going to see it? Yeah everyone else is there, but it will not be the same without Downey!!!

  18. I hope they don’t change RDJ. RDJ IS Iron Man. No one else can replace him. If he leaves, thats it, I’m out. I hate movies that change the actor playing the character half way through, or like Spiderman, I refuse to watch the new one, too soon for a remake, plus, Tobey Maguire IS Spiderman, not this new kid. RDJ must stay, it wouldn’t make sense without him or if he switches. No no.

    • Spiderman is different though. They rebooted the series. If they replace RDJ it is even stranger because it is the same series. Although Bruce Banner being replaced wasn’t that bad in the end.

  19. Downey is the ONLY Iron Man. He can’t be replaced. No one can be Iron Man like Downey! Avengers 2 will not be the same without Downey!!!

  20. I wouldn’t want to see anyone to replace Robert. No one could ever replace him to be Tony. Robert is the best to do this!

  21. If RDJ isn’t in Avengers 2 i will not guarantee that i will ever watch it, and I’m willing to bet that a large majority of marvel fans would do the same if Downey is not in Avenger 2

  22. Iron man wont be iron man with out robert downey jr….. we want more iron man movies with him and advengers as well…. if there is a recast i will quit watching the movies….

  23. robert downey jr can not (and hopefully will not) be replaced.
he IS tony stark and the avengers 2 won’t be nearly as successful as it could be if he’s not in it.
[also, if he does get replaced i feel bad for the guy who replaces him. i mean, he'd get so much hate, wouldn't he?]

  24. they should just kill off tony stark or have his character retire, if rdj leaves, and have a new character become the new iron man. like batman beyond

  25. I’d love to see RDJ return but as we all know he can’t do this forever sadly, if he willingly decides to step down i’ll be sad but at the same time look back and think he had a good run. Now if he does what if they used a variation of the “Teen Tony” story arc?

  26. honestly if RDJ bows out i would hate to see a recast and i think they can do more with a death of iron man. yes that sounds crazy but RDJ is tony stark no one else can and if iron man is dead then that can really help the movies develop and help the team develop and work better together. then it also shows that the team is un beatable and that they are mortal. then war machine or iron patriot can take his spot which would be pretty cool. i wouldnt want them to kill him off until phase 3 though he needs to be in the second avengers.

  27. It’s me the real Christian bale
I personally think No One Can Play Tony Stark Better Than Robert

  28. Iron Man not being played by RDJ would be like Charles Xavier (older, bald, wheelchair bound Xavier, not younger) not being played by Patrick Stewart. Even before the X-Men movies started pre-production, I thought Stewart would make a perfect Xavier.
