Robert Downey Jr. on Iron Man Potentially Being Recast After ‘The Avengers 2′

iron man3 Robert Downey Jr. on Iron Man Potentially Being Recast After The Avengers 2

Robert Downey Jr. has become synonymous with Marvel hero Iron Man (A.K.A. Tony Stark) ever since the character’s first big screen appearance in 2008. The hero has since evolved into the most bankable and recognizable character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Downey’s contract with Marvel Studios expires after the upcoming Iron Man 3, leaving his continued involvement in the role up in the air.

Previously, Downey said that he would be hesitant to turn his back on the character. Of course, that statement was predicated on the continued high quality and warm audience reception to Marvel’s cinematic efforts, and after The Avengers, audience goodwill is surely at an all-time high for the studio’s second slate of films.

Now, in an interview with Empire (via Comic Book Movie), Downey has again responded to the possibility that he may eventually hang up his metallic hat:

“Let’s just say that the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it. There’s a little bit of soul reclamation going on. I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best. Sorry! The affinity with Tony now is: How do you sustain something? I’m not stupid, I like to play ball, I love the company, I love the character, and the business side of things, I’m not too picky about that either.”

Funny that Downey should mention the business side of things. The billion-dollar success of The Avengers gives him tremendous leverage in renegotiating his contract, should he choose to do so. However, he does seem far more at ease with the idea of letting someone else step into Stark’s shoes than in previous comments.

“[Recasting] would probably be the best thing in the world for me. You know, ego…but sometimes ego just has to be smashed. Let’s see what happens. I take the audience very seriously – I feel bad when I see folks doing movies and the audience is like, ‘Don’t do that anymore.’ I don’t have to overstay my welcome…”

If the actor bows out, Marvel would likely go the recasting route as the studio seems intent on keeping Stark around for a good long while (or at least through The Avengers 2). Kevin Feige had this to say about the character’s involvement in Phase Two:

“Tony’s going to carry on. ‘Avengers 2′ already has a release date!”

Audiences have thus far responded overwhelmingly well to Downey’s take on Tony Stark, and it could be argued that the actor is largely responsible for the success of Iron Man. So it’s largely in Marvel’s best interest to keep him onboard for as long as possible. We expect Downey to at least appear throughout Phase Two (potentially helping to kick off the cosmic side of things in Guardians of the Galaxy).

However, if he does decide to part ways with Marvel, who would you like to see step into the role? Let us know in the comments.

Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black, from his and Drew Pearce’s screenplay. It stars Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, William Sadler, James Badge Dale and the voice of Paul Bettany.

Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe begins when Iron Man 3 releases May 3rd, 2013, followed by Thor: The Dark World on November 8th, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4th, 2014, and Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1st, 2014. It concludes with The Avengers 2 on May 1st, 2015.

  1. I read somewhere on the net that Robert Downey Jr, if it were up to him, he would make 15 Iron Man sequels. This guy IS Iron Man. Right now, there isn’t anyone who can fill his shoes… If I were Marvel, i’d sign him up to the end of this whole thing (Phase 1…. Phase 2…….Phase 3).

  2. I’m a fan of RDJ and hope he’ll stick around. But, I’m also worried about him. Every time I see him in the public eye, he seems to be acting as if he IS Tony Stark. The way he dresses, mannerisms, etc. I hope he isn’t unable to recover from a Daniel Day-Lewis style of method acting.

    • Thats because RDJ’s real personality is actually pretty close to how he portrays Stark. Ton Stark is just RDJ turned up to 10. If you look at his other movies, he is pretty similar to the Stark character. Even Sherlock Holmes, basically Victorian Tony Stark.

  3. When RDJ decides to hang up the armor, no amount of money or contract extensions will change his mind. (Let’s just hope the decision to quit is ultimately his.) That said, I’m most excited about Tony Stark taking more of a background role (in the form of guest appearances)like Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Rhodey could continue as IM, giving Marvel another legit black superhero. (Of course, he’d have to spend most of his IM time without a hemet so we can tell he’s black, PCness and all.)But even Sean Connery finally decided to quit being Bond, and we didn’t quit going to those movies.

    • Reverse racism at it’s finest. FYI….Perry White, black actor. Electro…black actor. Aren’t you happy enough with that?

      • Don’t forget blade

      • Don’t forget blade.

        • blada cant replace with tony the real iron man is only tony stark

  4. If this happens I will boycott the world. There is no more perfect an incarnation of Tony Stark than in RDJ, anyone else just wouldn’t work.

  5. I literally have no idea how I would cope with someone else playing Iron Man. I don’t think anyone would be able to live up to the iconic character Robert Downey Jr. has created.

  6. I see people making comments about how RDJ may be emulating his character too much in real life. How his mannerisms and even how he dresses is like Tony Stark. Well… no sh*t. That’s the beautiful thing about RDJ. He’s human. He’s lived that party life. He also has a pretty fat bank account, so yeah… there’s bit of a similarity between his character and his “real life” persona.
I honestly cannot think of ANYONE I’d want to see in this role (as Tony Stark). Maybe a different iteration of Iron Man… but not TONY. RDJ’s portrayal of the character is too big to imitate or duplicate with a different actor.
There are ways to reboot the character of Iron Man if he were to hang up his helmet, but I don’t foresee having to worry about that anytime soon. So, play on player. Keep doing what you do best.
It will be a sad day when the announcement comes that there will be no more RDJ/Iron Man films. It’s inevitable. All good things must come to an end, but we will visit that when the time comes. In the very distant future I hope. One where he passes the torch on film to the New Avengers.

    • Of course the marvel comics will go on, and with it TV shows will come , new comic story arcs and all that merchandise etc. What I believe and I think other people believe is that replacing RDJ with Iron Man will kind of leave a dent in this “Marvel Cinematic Universe”. Certainly they have done replacements with Norton and Ruffalo, or Terrence Howard to Cheadle, but the article said it best: RDJ IS iron man.

So I think that in the end, in my perfect world, Downey would return as Iron Man in guardians of the galaxy (not as a main character but not as a cameo- kind of like SHIELD “behind the curtain role” in Avengers), appear as a main character in Avengers 2, and for phase 3 have a cameo or indication that he is there. And then of course have him don on the hulkbuster suit for Avengers 3.
      Like I said

      • just a hope I will hold on to, until we get a future confirmation from RDJ himself

  7. I’d rather see Stark recast than have the character go down the Jack Sparrow route. I liked Johnny Depp for three movies, but then there was nothing more for him to do. As long as there’s a reason to have Tony Stark around as a character (to do more than just kick ass and make the studio some money, obviously) then I’m fine with him staying.

  8. I don’t want to see anybody other than RDJ playing Tony Stark.

    Sorry. It just would suck.

  9. To be honest I can’t think of a single actor out there that could be Tony Stark. The character would have to be reinvented on the screen.

RDJ owns this character & role, to recast him would be a huge mistake. . It would also be a sign, in my mind anyway, that Marvel might be getting a little big headed. If they think that they can just put another actor in Starks shoes, and it will be fine and the fans will just buy it shows a lack of understanding on their part. No offense to Hulk fans, but this isn’t Banner we’re talking about here. RDJ/Stark is the glue that makes the Avengers go/work. He is the hub the other characters revolve around, period.

If RDJ walks away inspite of Marvels efforts to keep him, that’s another story. Then they have no choice.

RDJ is the best for this character & this character is best for RDJ. It’s his most sucessfull role ever. If he can’t/won’t continue, then kill off the character. No Nic Cage, no Charlie Sheen, no up and coming unknown actor, just end it.

I love RDJ. I love Iron Man/Tony Stark, they’re my personal favorites and I just hope it keeps going the way it’s going with RDJ.

    • “If he can’t/won’t continue, then kill off the character….” Your obviously living in another planet….
Do you seriously think that Marvel will kill off Tony Stark when RDJ leaves? F*cking of course not….!
No can imagine TS/ Iron Man without RDJ I’m the role…but someone will replace him, there is no doubt about that. Who ever that guy is will have huge boots to fill.

  10. I hate the idea of War Machine taking over at Iron Man. The moves are going deeper into the Marvel mythos not retracting. War Machine has been introduced and so to take him out would silly.

  11. I’m sure it’s already been said, but since i didn’t read all the posts on this tread.
If the day comes that either RDJ/Marvel chooses to replace or change actors, it could work out, just look at all the different James Bonds we have had over the years, so thats my thoughts on this.

    till next time

  12. Josh Brolin or Bradley Cooper to replace RDJ….

    • Bradley Cooper maybe, no way for Brolin. Unless they do a more serious take on Iron Man, then it might work with Brolin.

  13. RDJ won’t return so what? I’m not crying about it. I knew that this day will come, he’s getting old. Besides Robert Downey Jr isn’t really a good actor anyway, i seen some of his movies & his acting is sh*t. He needs to take lessons from Sean Penn & Denzel Washington. When they do find an actor to replace him, he’ll be good.

    • Sean Penn or Denzel Washington would have totally made a better Tony Stark/Iron Man!!! Said no one ever.

    • @ Norrin Radd

      LOL!!!!!! You are very funny!!!
      LOL LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. I don’t see how he can be recast in the middle of phase 2. I can see him “retiring” Iron Man as in ending the IM movies at three, then only playing Iron Man in the Avengers sequels. Face it, there’s going to be a third Avengers movie one day. No way that franchise ends at two.

  15. Rob Lowe, maybe?

  16. I honestly cant see anyone else play Tony Stark. Robert Downey Jr. IS Tony Stark. If they eventually have to recast, whoever they choose has some BIG shoes to fill.

  17. Robert Downey Jr. IS Iron Man. If he was to be replaced, I would probably just drift away from the series. If he goes, Iron Man goes. I don’t want to see anybody else playing this role.

  18. Nicolas Cage! he has the attitude!

  19. There’s no need to reboot, just move forward with the story arcs,James Rhodes step in for one or two movies before recasting to get people used to seen someone elf in the Armor Suits.

  20. There’s no need to reboot, just move forward with the story arcs,James Rhodes can step in for one or two movies before recasting to get people used to seen someone elf in the Armor Suits.

  21. for me Robert Downey Jr is Iron Man dont recast him ether get a renew contract or kill him off

    just my opinion

  22. I’d rather see Iron Patriot or War Machine step into the empty void left by Iron Man than to see the role of Tony Stark recast.

  23. Well Robert Downey Jr could appear only for the Avengers films as Tony stark instead of getting solo films.Marvel could say he got in a accident and his face got reconstructed and bring someone else.they could do something like thanos injured his face so that’s why it had to get reconstructed. But I think they should just bring him in the Avengers so he can help face off the thanos!and who ever their going to face off for phase 3!

    • @carlos leon, Marvel didn’t have to do that with Mark Ruffalo replacing Ed Norton in the Avengers so there wouldn’t be a need for that. People would know it’s a continuation and that RDJ only retired from the role.

  24. Love and appreciate RDJ and the job he’s doing.

“You experience things and then they’re over”…. :(

  25. No RDJ, no $ from me.

  26. I’m all for a reboot if they start a completely new story. Not do like what they did with the spiderman reboot,(which I will not see any time soon)just tell the origin story again, I will not pay to see that.

    • The Amazing Spider-Man was way better than the ones with Tobey Maguire… Those ones were so bad in terms of comic accuracy and the acting sucked. They are way too far into the RDJ version of Iron Man to reboot anytime in the next 40 years. If Downey is gone the Marvel Cinematic Universe falls apart at the seams.

  27. RDJ you’re killin’ us. I don’t think I have EVER read a negative comment about you playing Tony Stark, anywhere……..ever.

You are about as perfect a fit for the character as there ever was (even against the Reeves-Superman connection) so PLEASE, keep playing IM and let Disney pay you boatloads of cash until Marvel decides to pull the plug (even if that means until you die)

  28. Please don’t leave RDJ, im begging u, u are the one who kickstarted this whole thing since blade/x-men and u are savior of marvel. If not another iron man movie aleast have input/cameo or co-star in the other marvels movie till the Avengers 3, then i can see them recasting ppls after the 3rd Avengers movies like a new beginning

  29. Well, the man must retire eventually. Even so, RDJ made one the best superhero personas ever. Nobody will forget that for some more decades.

I don’t mind Tony Stark being recast, but let’s remember Christopher Nolan’s comment on his Dark Knight Trilogy. He was right in that movie is different from comic book. We can’t have an eternally young Tony Stark dons his armor in the big screen once per three years.

It’ll be either a reboot, or make Tony passes the armor to a successor. That, or have it like in comics: died, resurrected, blown across dimension, returned, died, back, etc. What do you guys think?
