Robert Downey Jr. on Iron Man Potentially Being Recast After ‘The Avengers 2′

iron man3 Robert Downey Jr. on Iron Man Potentially Being Recast After The Avengers 2

Robert Downey Jr. has become synonymous with Marvel hero Iron Man (A.K.A. Tony Stark) ever since the character’s first big screen appearance in 2008. The hero has since evolved into the most bankable and recognizable character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Downey’s contract with Marvel Studios expires after the upcoming Iron Man 3, leaving his continued involvement in the role up in the air.

Previously, Downey said that he would be hesitant to turn his back on the character. Of course, that statement was predicated on the continued high quality and warm audience reception to Marvel’s cinematic efforts, and after The Avengers, audience goodwill is surely at an all-time high for the studio’s second slate of films.

Now, in an interview with Empire (via Comic Book Movie), Downey has again responded to the possibility that he may eventually hang up his metallic hat:

“Let’s just say that the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it. There’s a little bit of soul reclamation going on. I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best. Sorry! The affinity with Tony now is: How do you sustain something? I’m not stupid, I like to play ball, I love the company, I love the character, and the business side of things, I’m not too picky about that either.”

Funny that Downey should mention the business side of things. The billion-dollar success of The Avengers gives him tremendous leverage in renegotiating his contract, should he choose to do so. However, he does seem far more at ease with the idea of letting someone else step into Stark’s shoes than in previous comments.

“[Recasting] would probably be the best thing in the world for me. You know, ego…but sometimes ego just has to be smashed. Let’s see what happens. I take the audience very seriously – I feel bad when I see folks doing movies and the audience is like, ‘Don’t do that anymore.’ I don’t have to overstay my welcome…”

If the actor bows out, Marvel would likely go the recasting route as the studio seems intent on keeping Stark around for a good long while (or at least through The Avengers 2). Kevin Feige had this to say about the character’s involvement in Phase Two:

“Tony’s going to carry on. ‘Avengers 2′ already has a release date!”

Audiences have thus far responded overwhelmingly well to Downey’s take on Tony Stark, and it could be argued that the actor is largely responsible for the success of Iron Man. So it’s largely in Marvel’s best interest to keep him onboard for as long as possible. We expect Downey to at least appear throughout Phase Two (potentially helping to kick off the cosmic side of things in Guardians of the Galaxy).

However, if he does decide to part ways with Marvel, who would you like to see step into the role? Let us know in the comments.

Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black, from his and Drew Pearce’s screenplay. It stars Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, William Sadler, James Badge Dale and the voice of Paul Bettany.

Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe begins when Iron Man 3 releases May 3rd, 2013, followed by Thor: The Dark World on November 8th, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4th, 2014, and Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1st, 2014. It concludes with The Avengers 2 on May 1st, 2015.

  1. The moment I debut shooting Thor in his tight little Viking jimmies, is the moment you’ll stop giving a damn about Tin Can over there, seriously, does he have a healing factor? Didn’t think so.

  2. I second that.

  3. I think robert downey jr should as iron man cause nobody better then him to do that role

  4. I think robert downey jr should stay as iron man cause nobody better then him to do that role

  5. Would be a travesty if Robert Downy Jr left the role of ironman!!! He has become ironman/Tony Stark!

  6. Robert Downey Jr is iron man no one else

  7. I hope RDJ stays on as he is the face of Tony Stark. I definately want to see him for Iron Man 4.

  8. If RDJ stops being Tony/IronMan, then the entire movie franchise will be crap. He is Ironman, he is Tony stark. Changing Downey for someone else would be as bad as changing hulk to a little pink turd… No one wants to see either happen.

  9. Only Robert downey Jr can pull of iron man

  10. RDJ/Tony Stark said specifically at the end of Iron Man 3 “One thing you can’t take away from me, I am Iron Man”

  11. From the moment Robert Downey Jr. portrayed Tony Stark/ Ironman was the moment I wouldn’t accept any other. Replacing him, RECASTING someone as Tony Stark for Ironman would be a travesty. I believe no one else could play the character like Robert Downey Jr did and if they tried, I do believe no one would accept it. I myself being one of them. Just reading this had broken my heart and hopes for the Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. If Robert Downey Jr ever reads any comments from fan, I hope he and Marvel Studios reads this and know that it would mean a lot to me and the many, many fans out there if he and Marvel would renew his contract and continue to be the only Tony Stark and Ironman that we know and love.

    • Totally true! I would probably cry if he decided not to play in iron man 4. And i will probably cry when the franchise comes to an end as well. I hate to think about it. I love robert downey jr. And he has given some of his best acting skills in iron man and sherlock holmes. You are iron man, no one else can replace that.

  12. If Robert Downey Jr. doesn’t play Iron man, I’m just simply not watching it.

  13. I really think that robert downey jr should stay as tony stark. No one will be able to play the part like him, he is tony stark. I really hope he will extend his contract and make more movies as tony stark.

  14. As far as I’m concerned, RDJ IS Iron Man and there is no one who could replace him. His face will be truly missed if replaced. Just as they did in Spartacus, they replaced andy Whitfield ( by no choice of his own) and after that the series just seemed to miss a lot because it was not Andy playing the role of Spartacus.

    • they replaced him in spartacus, because he died of cancer.

  15. They can’t just replace Robert Downey Jr. after all that he has given to the franchise now. He has played in three Iron Man movies, the Avengers, and the end of the second Incredible Hulk movie. Recasting would just infuriate fans all over the world and the franchise would suffer. Especially how RDJ brought out the Stark/Iron Man character so well(I should know, being an Iron Man fan before the movies came out). If the franchise has to end, let it be with dignity, and not in a sad attempt to recover something that has already been lost from removing an essential character.

  16. Iron Man 3 was terrible and he ate up time in Avengers. He’s right Iron Man 1 was the best fit then 2 and in Avengers he started to get annoying and Iron Man 3 was god awful. If he doesn’t want to do it anymore then so be it.

  17. If Tony Stark will be played by another actor other than Robert Downey Jr. , there’s a big, big chance of me not liking him.

Robert Downey Jr. is the perfect Tony Stark, with his sarcastic remarks and even if they replace him with someone else, when I think of Tony Stark the face that will pop up in my mind will always be Robert Downey Jr.’s

He’s the perfect Tony Stark. Please continue being Tony Stark..

  18. It’s up to Robert whether he truly wants to suit up again and take on ironman or the avengers, but honestly I can say that there is no one else better for the role of Tony Stark than Robert Downey Jr. There is such as ego and doing too much with the same role, but Robert has proven that he’s not just Ironman, he can do other things while in the process of doing another marvel movie. The fans love him. So if he truly chooses to step aside and let someone else take over then it’s probably because he sees it fit for a refresh, but sometimes people and fans approve and sticking with something old fashion as long as it works and trust me Robert Downey Jr asTony Stark/Ironman works. It would honestly be like when Val and George tried to take over Batman after Michael Keaton (I apologize for any typos). A recast wouldn’t work unless they stopped making Ironman movies for five to ten years and with the Avengers going on to a second movie, I don’t see that happening. Is Ironman 4 necessary, I don’t think so, but at least an Avengers 3 (if two does well) is worth Robert holding totthe role a bit more.

  19. Only Robert Downey Jr. Can be Iron Man ! He looks like and can play the role perfectly. It’s a believable character because he’s really awesome at portraying him!

  20. Robert downey jr is iron man. I cant picture anyone else playing the role. I agree with other comments on the topic that if he is replaced i will not watch the movie. I am a huge fan of the Marvel Universe. He is the core of iron man, the reason for its success the reason people go to see the movies.I would hate to see him move in another direction. In response to iron man 3 being awful, i agree that it wasnt the jaw dropper the first 2 were or the avengers movie however it is hard for any of the sequels to match the non stop thrill ride that was the avengers, after taking on aliens from other galaxies how do u top that? However i hope to see robert downey jr as the first and last iron man

  21. R Robert has proven to us that he is the best actor, and that is why nobody should replace we have learned a lot from him. We all love him and we all want him to be that sarcastic guy that he is…. he is the only Iron Man and noone else should replace him at all. Love you Robert Downey Jr/Iron Man FOREVER and EVER

  22. Robert has proven to us that he is the best actor, and that is why nobody should replace we have learned a lot from him. 23. Please just keep Downey as Iron Man, he plays the role great and it’s just weird and unnecessary to recast the character all of a sudden, especially when we’re technically in the same storyline.

I’d understand bringing someone else a few years down the road when its a completely new reboot with its own lore/theme and so on (i.e like it was for George Clooney’s Batman and Christian Bale’s Batman), but switching right now would just turn many people off tbh.

  24. Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man / Tony Stark, and no one can replace him in this role. If that happens I will not watch the sequel. Iron man without Robert Downey Jr. is no Iron man! He is irreplaceable!

  25. Hi,
I don’t think anybody can step in to Robert Downey’s shoes. He play’s Tony Stark so well and Ironman even better.
If he no longer plays this role then I for one would loose interest in any Ironman movies to follow.
Pay the man what he wants he is worth every penny.

    Kind regards
    A fan

  26. You people crack me up. Probably the same ones that hated the idea of Heath Ledger being cast as the Joker, and then you saw the movie and realized how wrong you were. RDJ and the entire cast is going to get old, too old to play the roles, and at some point, they’re going to need to be replaced. I kinda hope they do it the same way they’ve been doing the Hulk.

While they haven’t said the first two Hulks movies are canon for Ruffalo’s version of the Bruce Banner character, you can easily picture it as the same person with all the same emotional baggage, especially since RDJ had a cameo in the second movie. Ruffalo stepped in for Norton and it was fine, things went without a hitch. Personally, I like the idea of keeping the same characters instead of rebooting, and if that means recasting the actors to make the lore stick, more power to the execs: do it. Replacing RDJ as Iron Man now, while the rest of the cast is still there, won’t be nearly as bad as recasting the entire Avengers lineup if/when they do a reboot.

  27. I would be devistated if robert downey jr doesnt continue as tony…the movies will not be the same and i most likely will not be watching them .. :-(

  28. Holy crap! Why are so many of you all up on rdj’s nut? Dudes just an actor, he’ll get too old to play the part then theyll find a new guy. Where do u people come from, seriously. Is rdjs agent trolling the talkbacks tryin to get more miney for his cash cow?
