Lou Ferrigno Claims Disney is Planning Mark Ruffalo ‘Hulk’ Movie After ‘Avengers 2′

Published 1 year ago by

Thor: The Dark World is currently in the latter end of its theatrical run and about to cross the $600 million mark, continuing the success of the post-Avengers Marvel Cinematic Universe after Iron Man 3 broke records around the world this summer with its $1.2 billion haul. The following two years already have a pair of movies each in development, three of them sequels and the fourth introducing an new character in Ant-Man.

After that, all we have is speculation and rumors as we wait until next summer (likely at San Diego Comic-Con) to find out what Marvel Studios has in the cards for moviegoers in Phase 3. One of the major questions for fans is whether or not Marvel will give franchise newcomer Mark Ruffalo a chance to take the Hulk character on a solo adventure and if they do, when? Previous Hulk actor Lou Ferrigno may have part of the answer!

When asked in an interview by Flicks And The City if he’d like to see Ruffalo get a chance at leading his own Hulk solo film, Ferrigno was quick to interrupt with a confident “they are doing another Hulk movie.” He says that Hulk was a big star in The Avengers and followed up by claiming Disney agreed to do another Hulk movie and that he thinks it’s coming after The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Ferrigno’s also interested in playing another character in it, something akin to a military general.

At the very least, in The Avengers 2 and any Hulk-related spinoffs or followups, Ferrigno could voice the big green alter ego while Ruffalo pulls double-duty as Bruce Banner and doing the motion capture work for the physical side of Hulk  - like he did in The Avengers.

There were rumors dating back to the release of The Avengers that Marvel Studios could be planning Planet Hulk and World War Hulk films but detractors – including overseer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Joss Whedon – claim it wouldn’t make sense for them to do that since such a project would involve very little Bruce Banner, and all CGI creatures in a landscape far too similar to Disney’s financially disastrous John Carter. Whedon even went as far as calling the rumors “nonsense.”

Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige however, was more positive about the possibilities and did mention Planet Hulk and World War Hulk were cool stories and that they’d love to see Ruffalo lead his own film. As for Ruffalo himself, he said earlier this year that he’d love to do one eventually but that there were no plans for such a thing.

We do know that Marvel Studios has three confirmed release dates in 2016 and 2017 and we know they’re going to have a second film in 2017, making it four theatrical releases in those two years. When we spoke to Feige he confirmed to us that the first movie in each of those two years will be for sequels to established brands, followed by the launch of a new IP or character, explaining that it’s the working formula for the studio.

For us, we figure that means Thor 3 in May 2016, Captain America 3 in 2017 and the other two slots going towards introducing Doctor Strange and the other possibly being The Inhumans (which could potentially double as a sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy). In 2018, we can expect The Avengers 3 to kick off the summer so any potential Incredible Hulk 3/Planet Hulk wouldn’t come until Phase 3 at the earliest. Perhaps the story of The Avengers 3 could end with Earth’s Mightiest heroes launching Ruffalo’s Hulk into outer space with the help of the Guardians of the Galaxy when they realize he can’t be controlled and is too dangerous.

What would you like to see from a Ruffalo Hulk film and when should Marvel Studios release it?

  1. If they could find a good way to weave Hulk into a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel or the inevitable Inhumans movie, and incorporate elements from Planet Hulk that’d be cool. But a solo Hulk movie in space? Too much cgi, not enough human story, I’m on the fence like you guys are.

  2. ah man, maybe they can connect BP to this, i don’t know how Hulk can carry his own movie unless he has some partners

  3. Bring on planet hulk plez

    • There already is an animated Planet Hulk movie, we don’t need a live-action one.

      • Yes I know. I have seen it. But a big budget live action hulk movie where he isn’t fighting military or an under used abomination.. Would be great for once n the planet hulk story is fantastic n they don’t have to go to a word for word approach but use the same story line n tweak it up a bit .. Could lead to a great movie lots of CGI yes but oh well definitely worth it

        • The Planet Hulk story was alright, nothing special but even through the many flaws it was enjoyable (mostly found the world interesting) but the World War Hulk story that followed was abysmal. It’s just there are many far better stories involving the Hulk than PH and especially WWH, that doesn’t have to involve him fighting the military.

        • No. It’s an overrated storyline. The cartoon version was good enough. Let’s leave it at that.

  4. I don’t know why anyone believes Ferrigno would have knowledge of this. Reminds me of Michael Dorn claiming there’s a series about Worf coming, when The Next Generation is done and over with.

    • I will always hold it against Abrams and Paramount for not including the TNG crew in the opening minutes of Star Trek, helping old Spock on his mission. That would be the PERFECT sendoff for the franchise.

      • I’m with you there, 100%. TNG is one of my favorite shows and I loved any crossover between TOS and TNG cast no matter how small or infrequent.

      • that would’ve been insanely awesome!!!!!!how far in the future is old spock from though?…

        • TNG movie era. Check out the Star Trek movie prequel comic. It was all TNG leading into the Abrams film.

  5. The Inhumans being central to a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel is a great idea.

  6. Mark Ruffalo: Bruce Banner
    Mélanie Laurent: Betty Ross
    Josh Hutcherson: Rick Jones
    Olivia Wilde: Jennifer Walters
Tim Blake Nelson: Samuel Sterns/ The Leader
William Hurt: General Ross/ Red Hulk

Jennifer Walters gets badly injured somewhere in the movie and Bruce is forced to give her a blood transfusion, then the post credit scene is her lying unconscious in a hospital bed she opens her eyes which are now glowing green and she then transforms into She-Hulk.

  7. I’m probably in the minority here, but I just think the Hulk is a boring character. I mean, most just want to see a movie where Hulk is smashing things around like he was in The Avengers. The problem is that you can’t make a feature film like that unless it is Planet Hulk or World War Hulk. You have to get some kind of story in there, but I just find the character interesting enough for that to happen.

I’ll admit to liking both films, but what more is there to do with the character? We saw Banner struggle with having the Hulk inside of him in Ang Lee’s film and we’ve seen him chased by the military in The Incredible Hulk. My question is what more can you do with him other have him in the same kind of role he had in The Avengers?

    • If people didn’t like the destruction in MoS, than IDK how the hell they are going to keep peoples attention; all Hulk does is smash.

      • *Then

      • Because Superman Doesnt smash, heck I don’t what he does besides Punches and flies. but MoS was a great film. Destroying all of Metropolis was kinda dumb. Then showing everything back to normal? They could have implied that it took months to re-build, heck even years! But no they didn’t instead they showed a new buildings all fresh no damage and everyone very happy.

    • +1000000

  8. Meant I don’t find the character interesting enough.

  9. I believe Ruffalo did a great job portraying Bruce Banner. I think a solo movie would be great. But what I truly, undeniably, with my whole heart want is to see the Civil War on screen. Please Whedon! Please Feige!

    • Probably after the Infinity Gauntlet they’ll do that.

    • They would have to get the rights to Spider-Man, X-Men and Fantastic Four before they even considered doing Civil War.

      • And the same goes for Battle World, Secret Wars, and Secret Invasion in order for them to do those films they’ll have to get all of the characters rights from the studios

    • I seem to be in the minority on this but i did not like Ruffalo as Banner and it is the only thing about The Avengers that i didn’t like and found completely unconvincing.

  10. It will be a slight surprise if it happens. However, I think Mark Ruffalo’s hulk is different from the previous takes on the Hulk. This one, though seems afraid of the hulk taking over…when it does…seems to enjoy being the Hulk. The angst with being a monster plays a part….but the joy of being a hero is also so clearly visible in Ruffalo’s portrayal. That’s why..it could work..

  11. I honestly thought Ruffalo’s Banner seemed too smug and arrogant rather than afraid of unleashing the Hulk so I hope that gets toned down if they bring Hulk back.

I would like to see Abomination again, maybe he could team with The Leader and another Hulk villain, forcing Hulk to team up (maybe bring Ty Burrell back as Doc Samson) to defeat them?

    • Hell yeah! Bring back Abomination! And introduce the Leader. They set that up in the Incredible Hulk and have done nothing with it. Eh, maybe the Agents of Shield took care of that.

      • There’s a tie-in comic where you see The Leader arrested by Black Widow.

    • +1 Abomination, The Leader, Red Hulk(extremis) would be amazing! Ruffalo’s banner was a little to controlled i agree, but maybe they could get it to where his Hulk cells are over-growing so it becomes more difficult to control himself. Also He could accidently kill Betty to make him(hulk) super pissed off.

    • I for one was tired of always seeing a timid Bruce Banner scared to actively deal with the Hulk in him. It was wholly refreshing to see Ruffalo’s take with the Hulk as a pesky alter ego that bugs him from time to time.

    • No Ty Burrell as Doc Sampson you are a freakin duchebag; how about The Rock as Doc Sampson and bring in Vin Diesel to play The Absorbing Man (aka) Crusher Creel. They could have The Hulk battle big name villians in a monsterous Hulk movie. I don’t go see a Hulk movie for the freakin dialogue. No true Hulk fan wants to see Hulk fighting gender challenged foes.

    • I completely agree about Ruffalo’s Banner and i am not a fan at all. Way too smug and not enough depth, Banner is confident but with turmoil and troubled. Ruffalo portrayed none of that. I could care less about seeing an entire film with him as Banner and Hulk is hands down my favorite character so that bums me out.

  12. Well I certainly hope so. We’ve gone long enough already without a sequel. I don’t understand why a new Hulk movie wasn’t greenlit about 3 minutes after The Avengers came out. All this about the potential story not being interesting is complete poppycock. Banner and Hulk have way more character than some of the other characters.

    • You don’t know why? I don’t actually believe that.

2 different movies didn’t do that great. They’re gun-shy and cautious about taking another shot at it.

(Granted, “Hulk” was not a Marvel Studios production but it’s still a Hulk film)

      • Hulk was just terrible. That’s why it didn’t do well. Incredible hulk was great and I will never understand why it didn’t do well. Probably just because of Hulk. But after the Avengers The incredible Hulk was literally everyone’s favorite character. You cannot tell me that kind of feedback shouldn’t have put a new Hulk movie into immediate production. If they can take a chance on Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man there is no reason for them to be cautious about a character people already know and love.

        • I think that the reason The Incredible Hulk didn’t score huge was that it overcorrected for 2003 Hulk. They got rid of the wild, bizarre elements of Ang Lee’s film, but lost all the ambition and beauty along the way. TIH is fairly solid and straightforward, but for me, it’s short on charisma and just isn’t that interesting, in particular the villain.

The perfect Hulk film is probably somewhere in between the two that we have seen. I think that Marvel is wisely being very careful about Ruffalo’s Hulk. They know that people liked the character, but are not rushing anything.

        • I think Hulk had something to do with the poor performance of The Incredible Hulk. I’m not saying it’s 100% to blame but still a major contributor. There are still plenty of people out there who still think The Incredible Hulk is a sequel to Ang Lee’s Hulk.

  13. Since Guillermo del Toro’s planned remake of the Bill Bixby The Incredible Hulk TV Show has been shelved, they should offer him to direct The Incredible Hulk 2 instead.

    • Sure, but we want the movie to actually get made.

I love del Toro, but he finishes about 1/1000 of the projects he works on.

  14. even though thor 2 was great and is not going to meet my 800 million dollar prediction
worldwide, for the next hulk movie or thor movie to get to the next level financially
marvel is going to have give the fans more heroes and villians added in and open up
the mcu with heroes and villians crossing over. time to change to standalone formula
because since disney put them together in avengers fans want crossovers and not those silly insinuations that agents of shield is getting so infamous for. (thor was just here
talking with me, he is in outer space, maybe we will drink tea together)

  15. Neill Blomkamp would be great for this just look at district 9 a man who doesn’t want to be a monster and wants to find a cure while others want him as a weapon and just imagine how it would all look

    • it’s like listening to John Moschitta do a Micro Machines commercial.

      • lol motormouth that guy is great

  16. the Planet Hulk animated movie is probably Marvel’s best in that department, Im ok with never seeing a live action one

  17. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel that if an Incredible Hulk movie featuring The Leader is never made, that it would be a cinematic injustice.

  18. If there’s a good story to be told, I’m all for another Hulk film. But I’m not that interested in watching lots of smashing; an intriguing, deep Bruce Banner story is what I want more. The Incredible Hulk was rather mundane for me.

I’m really curious as to who will play Betty and General Ross if those characters reappear. Technically, William Hurt is in-continuity with Robert Downey Jr. and I suspect that Liv Tyler actually might have better chemistry with Ruffalo than with Norton. It’s still a shame to lose Jennifer Connelly and Sam Elliot, though.

    • I didn’t much care for Liv Tyler’s portrayal, I liked Ruffalo’s chemistry with Mélanie Laurent in Now You See Me, I would like to see Betty Ross recast to her, I know she’s not a brunette but she can just dye it.

      • Laurent looks cool, and I could buy her as Betty. Yeah, I don’t think that Tyler was really right for the part either, but part of me still kinda wants to see her in the mix with the other Marvel characters. I don’t really expect that to happen, though, so I’d be fine with Laurent.

Olivia Wilde as Jennifer Walters intrigues me.

    • Planet Hulk is one of the best comic book stories I’ve read. It did more to develop Hulk’s character and persona than most any other series in my opinion. It’s definitely not dumb Hulk smashing. While the animated direct to DVD Planet Hulk was ok (but Beta Ray Bill for Silver Surfer? Really???), a well done movie would be awesome to me (maybe I’m in the minority). Once you did Planet Hulk, the next “Avengers” movie could be essentially World War Hulk, which would be an awesome movie in my opinion, but they’d have to be willing to show all of the Marvel universe getting their butts handed to them by a pissed-to-the-highest-of-piss-tivity Hulk with tactics and strategy, which might be asking a lot, since it will be tough to go back to dumb Hulk. In any case, you can’t do one without the other. If you do Planet Hulk, you absolutely have to do world War Hulk, and you can’t do WWH without Planet. You have X-Men, Avengers, Inhumans, Dr. Strange, and Sentry among others and all other than Sentry will have been introduced by then.

  19. Didn’t we have this discussion before. Both films have their merits. Ang Lee’s was great. The problem was that he made the hulk so huge. The story was not for children. I heard parents complaining that their children got bored.

I guess the Hulk would work just fine not being PG 13 except for the Avengers series. This is the kind of character that would only work with a more adult audience. Other characters that lie on the same page are Blade, Ghost Rider and Wolverine.

  20. Johnny Depp as Doctor Strange.

Mark Ruffalo did a better job as hulk than Bana & Norton, The Proof is in the avengers movie.
putting red hulk as villain would be amazing, with the leader, and maybe a superhero out of the upcoming phases teaming up with hulk

  21. please make it a team-up film or base it strictly off Mark Waid’s current run. I’ve never understood or enjoyed the Hulk in the comics, but I really think Bruce Banner, Agent of Shield Movie would work. By day, Bruce Banner making medical breakthroughs, and by night, Shield points the Hulk at (*Insert Bad guy or group*) threats.

  22. Only if they have The Hulk square off against The Leader and/or The Wendigo.
It would be a good thing to introduce or re-introduce characters like She-Hulk, Betty General Ross and Doc Sampson.

  23. “In 2018, we can expect The Avengers 3 to kick off the summer so any potential Incredible Hulk 3/Planet Hulk wouldn’t come until Phase 3 at the earliest. ”

Ahem, you mean Phase 4. Phase 4 is after Avengers 3. Phase 3 is before.

  24. Hulk and a thousand Scree-Ranters wiull give me a “smash”, but I am not that excited for another Huilk movie. Sorry, Hulk and Ruffalo just are kind of “meh” for me (although I will buy it on DVD for the collection). There are other marvel movies I would rather see get made.

  25. I like the idea of Ruffalo doing his own Hulk movie I’m not sure how I feel about Planet Hulk I think Whedon has a point when he says that it would be all cgi and stuff but another big thing for both stories (World War Hulk and Planet Hulk) is that they don’t have a lot of Bruce Banner if they were going to do the stories as movies I would want them to alter them so Banner himself is in it more because Hulk and Banner make the character I think thats what I like about it. I think it would be cool if they had Bruce Banner get transported to another world and encountered Quanax or some other space Baddie that he has (I hope for leader even though he doesn’t really fit that description). I guess I want a new Hulk movie not necessarily World War Hulk or Planet Hulk, to me Banner and Hulk make one character and to have one take over the entire story I don’t think would be as fun.

  26. I still think “Planet Hulk” could work. They could tweak the script where there is more of Ruffalo there could be flashbacks there could be dream sequences there could be “inner turmoil” scenes. I think Hulk works best as a spice and not as a main course. That said it would be interesting if a planet Hulk ended up with Hulk remaining in Hawk form maybe somehow alien technology or the alien world could make that happen….

  27. So Ferrigno is an executive at Marvel Studios now? I think he has been talking about someone making a Hulk movie since before they made the first one and he always coincidentally angling for a part.

  28. Ferrigno should play Red Hulk

  29. A solo hulk film would be tricky but do able. If marvel really wants this. They can play it safe and have tony stark involved. They have all of the elements to have a solid iron man/hulk team up. Heck. Iron man 3 would’ve been the perfect opportunity to try that out. Have banner help out tony at the extremis lab. Have banner help stark develop a hulk buster suit. Final showdown? Hulk vs hulk buster. Then do the post credits scene. See how fans react. And if it’s good. Give hulk a solo film
