Don Cheadle Returning For ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’

War Machine Missile Launcher Archer Marvel Comics Don Cheadle Returning For The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Don Cheadle, taking over the role of James “Rhodey” Rhodes from Terrence Howard for the Iron Man sequel, had the chance to suit up in armor of his own, dubbed War Machine. The character was nowhere to be found when New York came under attack by alien forces in The Avengers and his absence was explained in the Iron Man 3 prequel comic.

Since Iron Man 3 gave much more screen time and action sequences to Rhodey, will Marvel Studios and writer-director Joss Whedon find another way to not include him in The Avengers: Age of Ultron or will Cheadle get his wish and become another armored Avenger? We spoke with the actor at last year’s Comic-Con and again before Iron Man 3 hit theaters in May and at time, he hadn’t spoken when Whedon about the possibility. That was then.

USA Today spoke with Cheadle today about his Best Actor Golden Globe nomination for his role in in the TV comedy House of Lies and made mention that he “has a part” in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, seemingly confirming – without quoting Cheadle directly – that Rhodey will at least make an appearance in the next team-up event.

Considering how Iron Man 3 ended with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) tossing all of his Iron Man suits away and Rhodey now a proven warrior with his own War Machine and Iron Patriot suits, it would be strange to again make no mention of these facts when Stark returns for the battle against Ultron – a character whose new origins for the Marvel Cinematic Universe may have something to do with Stark, his armor designs (as revealed in The Avengers: Age of Ultron teaser) and his assistant artificial intelligence, J.A.R.V.I.S..

Cheadle has gone on record previously stating that there have been “discussions” around the future of Rhodey in the franchise, from appearances in future Avengers movie or other spinoffs. There’s also a chance that the character – who works for the U.S. military- can appear in the S.H.I.E.L.D.-focused Captain America: The Winter Soldier as a cameo. It’s that film after all, that serves as the prequel to Age of Ultron. Think of it as The Avengers 1.5.

Should Rhodey take Stark’s place on the team? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

  1. They should just make a spinoff team and use secondary characters like Iron Patriot/War Machine, Falcon etc.

    • I agree. But Kevin Feige said they have no plans for those movies.

  2. Bringing Rhodes in for at least a cameo just makes sense. Tony may have given up being Iron Man, but Iron Patriot is still kicking. He may not become an official Avenger, but I’m sure they’ll find a way to make it work. Actually, I’m just glad that his character will continue beyond the Iron Man trilogy.

    • Tony didn’t “give up being Iron Man”

      • The same way he did not blow up his Iron Man suits?

He will come back, I am sure of it (as sure as I am that the reason for his return would be Ultron), but when he blew up the suits, he was giving up.

        • It’s the man that makes the suit.

          • yeah and that man is gonna have a hard time fighting the evil robot without the suits.

  3. I think that ultron will take over Iron patriots armor so that it’s avengers vs ultron and iron patriot it would mess with tony and provide a really huge problem for the avengers, just my theory.

    • I hope not then it will feel like iron man 2 all over again.

  4. HELL YES! I was disappointed War Machine wasn’t in the first Avengers film.

  5. Personally I never care for Cheadle take on war machine.. I would of preferred Howard ..so I personally I don’t care if he is in it or not

    • Howard was cool as Rhoadey but he doesn’t look like he could do all that action. IMO

      • And the skinny Don Cheadle looks like he can.. Howard looks n acts more like a military man.. I really wish he would of stuck around for the other 2 movies n not got replaced. But what is done is done. Don’t me wrong I am not a cheadle hater. Just think Howard would of been a better fit

        • I like Terrance Howard but he isn’t nearly as witty as Don. Cheadle actually feels like he could be Tony’s best friend.

        • The reason Howard wasn’t invited back due to monetary issues than anything else. He was the highest grossing actor in the first Iron Man film. My guess is that Marvel didn’t want to put out that kind of money for supporting role, especially considering that Robert Downey Jr. had made more of a name for himself in the time between films. But if I recall correctly, I read in an interview Howard gave in which he said he felt like it was a total slap in the face that he was replaced by Don Cheadle.

    • I did not think either actor was very good. Very unremarkable and easily replaced.

  6. Oh no, this movie is gonna be overcrowded!!!!! **sarcasm**

    • Heh, yeah. OH NO TOO MANY CHARACTERS!!! ERMAHGERD!!!!!! HAVE YOU SEEN SPIDER-MAN 3? IT CAN NEVER WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • It’s ok for there to be alot of characters in Avengers because they’re a team

    • LOL.

    • In related news, the “Batman Vs Superman” villain(s) is The Legion Of Doom.

  7. I don’t really understand why Iron Patriot/War Machine isn’t part of S.H.I.E.L.D. He protects the President and goes on military missions…you’d think maybe Fury would have approached him for a position. He must have failed a psychological review.

    • Who knows, maybe he’ll pop up for 2 seconds on Agents of SHIELD.

      • HA! Not the S.H.I.E.L.D. I was referring too. I meant the helicarrier with Fury and Hill version ;)

Could you image how terrible those special effects would be with an Iron Patriot on AoS?

  8. YES ! ..good news

  9. I believe they should kill his character off. Here me out! If he was to die, Tony Stark would be forced back to work as Iron Man, and the US Government has just lost their most powerful weapon (that they control). Thoughts?

    • If killing Tony Stark’s friends is the only thing that moves him to action, S.H.I.E.L.D. would just start pretending to kill off everyone he knows.

  10. Let him join the West Coast Avengers with Hawkeye. :)

    • ^ This.

What would be hilarious is have a shot of Rhodey and Clint fighting back to back, and Clint says, “after this, we’re moving to California”.

      • Love the idea!

    • I’d love to see TWO teams that merge up on occasion.

      • Are you talking about Guardians and Avengers ? :3

        • ;)

      • Captain America 3: Cap’s Kooky Quartet

    • I still would rather have the Great Lakes Avengers.

      • What about Hawaiian Avengers? Something tells me they’d be in a league all by themselves.

        • I wasn’t joking, there actually is a Great Lakes Avengers.

          • Yes we know

            • Yes, but TheAdditional1 obviously didn’t know.

  11. Looks like we figured out who will die in Avengers 2. . . Hopefully not. And the whoever mentioned this being a great time to branch off into West Coast Avengers territory, great idea. Or, how about they form the Secret Avengers from this? Sideline Widow, Hawkeye, Rhodey and whoever else.

  12. I think that It’d bee cool for Iron Patriot/War Machine to fill the “suit” quotient in Age of Ultron, leaving Tony Stark to entertain us with his dialogue and person-to-person interactions.

  13. *quota

  14. Stark creates Ultron, malfunctions, Stark refuses becoming Iron man, Iron Patriot gets killed, forces Stark back to the Avengers

  15. “Since Iron Man 3 gave much more screen time and action sequences to Rhodey”

… What Iron Man 3 did you watch?… on top, he didnt even used the War Machine suit!
    Reason #1000 why I hated IM3.

    • THANK YOU!!!!

I thought I was the only one who watched the movie.

The “War Machine/Iron Patriot” didn’t even fire a bullet and left Pepper Potts to rescue Tony Stark from the Mandar…er…Guy Pearce. Geez what a terrible movie.

  16. with what looks like a split in Shield in Caps movie maybe he reverts back to War Machine..which branches off to Ultron

  17. Take his place on the team? No. That’s sort of ridiculous to suggest. It would be naive to the think that when the world is threatened a second time that the military wouldn’t send him to help the Avengers. Or, since it’s been posited/revealed that Stark will be Ultron’s estranged father, perhaps the military sends him to clean up Stark’s mess and he’s there because nobody wants the Avengers involved. Whedon has said that he isn’t adding any characters that will make it easier for our heroes, so it stands to reason that Rhodey won’t exactly be the cavalry.

  18. #1, having the Secret Avengers in a movie would be really cool. We’d get to exlpore more characters in a single phase. If Guardians and Thanos show up, I don’t see a need for people like Black Widow or Hawkeye making a big dent in the battle.
#2, I feel like Cap 2 makes Rhodey distrust the government, which causes him to go back to War Machine. Then Jarvis takes control of the Iron Patriot suit and Tony’s new tech designs to create Ultron. The 2 are drawn to battle due of guilt and their knowledge of the tech. Plus, fight fire with fire!

    • I could see Black Widow and Hawkeye getting beamed aboard a ship to sabotage it or something like. Or maybe stark make some cool tech to disable Ultron and Clint has to use an arrow to hit him with it. Something where they’re useful as a cog in the bigger bad guy beating machine.

  19. A Rhodey appearance in Ultron is OK. Taking Iron Man’s place is not. Stark/IM forever, even if IM #3 was really not very good. I would rather see Goliath and Wasp in Ultron than War Machine/Iron Patriot.

  20. It’s always a giant plot hole in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if the United States is attacked, and the US military does not respond, especially when they have War Machine. When NY is attacked, and the only military responding is the NY National Guard and SHIELD airplanes, there’s a problem here. West Point is close by, there’s air bases around, there should be much more military.

If they want to fill that plot hole, War Machine has to atleast cameo in the films for a reason why he can’t show up.

  21. All i hope is that nobody dies, forcing someone back into action. Im utterly tired of so called heroes needing motivation to save the day. It was the biggest problem with the avengers, is the end of the world and survival not important enough? Many other films do this, thr avengers isnt the only one just one i remember. I like my heroes with morality.

  22. I think this is awesome. I was dying to see War Machine in the first Avengers but wasn’t (love the movie, but that was my biggest disappointment) but now this is going to be awesome. Now all we need is Falcon.

  23. Im pretty sure whedon will kill off Rhodes. Thats the only way to raise the stakes and to keep the audience at the edge of their seats.

  24. Hope Falcon, and the Leader are in this, I want more Hulk!

  25. I’m calling it. Rhodey bites it in this movie.

  26. Rhodey/Iron Patriot is the most pointless character in any of these Marvel films. We have Iron Man so why have another – sure he may have some great story arcs in the comics but on the big screen who cares about him when there is a wealth of other heroes they could use.

  27. Rhodey was Ironman during the Secret Wars.

  28. technically isn’t WarMachine/Iron Patriot the Mark 2 armour? so it can be hacked into by Ultron due to it being and older model, and Whiplash easily hacked into it

    • No, in a tie in comic you see Tony Stark dismantiling the mark 2 armor, he then gives Rhodey a new suit of armor.

      • i see, good to know

      • It’s time to give Pepper her armor, she’s already an Extremis freakshow with superpowers. Just don’t use the stupid “Rescue” name.

  29. Oh sure kill the black guy! Thought that only happened in horror movies. Lol.
