There’s still over a year to go before we can finally see the highly anticipated superhero team-up sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron in theaters, but even with minimal footage to go on the hype train is chugging heartily along. Filming began about a month ago in South Africa and the cast and crew will visit multiple locations around the world as production continues – including, London, Seoul and Italy’s Aosta Valley.

The movie’s title is something of a giveaway for the new antagonist, and The Avengers: Age of Ultron will also feature many new characters including sibling superheroes Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision and Thomas Kretschmann as Baron von Strucker.

Concrete information regarding The Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s plot has been understandably difficult to come by, but with filming already underway a new cast member has just been announced. Korean actress Kim Soo-hyun (not to be confused with the other Kim Soo-hyun), who also goes by the name Claudia Kim, confirmed her entry into the Marvel cinematic universe this week on Twitter (translation courtesy of CBM):

“After a long wait, I’m happy to be back with great news. I have a lot to do ahead of me, but for now, the words ‘Welcome to the Marvel Universe’ are amazing and kind of overwhelming. I was a fan of Marvel Comics, and if you really like something, looks like fate can make it happen.”

Obviously the Marvel Universe is a pretty big place and with a number of Marvel movies in the pipeline Kim could have been referring to any of several upcoming films. Things were cleared up, however, when a Marvel official confirmed in a phone call to OSEN that Kim has been cast in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, though revealing the role she’s playing would give away too much about the plot:

“It would be a spoiler, so we can’t tell you which character Kim Soo-hyun will play. Marvel always prohibits telling too much about the story. Her character is already decided and the scene is already written so we cast Kim Soo-hyun, but we can’t let you know about her character. We only can say that her character is a substantial supporting role.”

Substantial” suggests that Kim will be more than just a background character and that The Avengers: Age of Ultron may even be setting her up for a bigger role in future Marvel features. Her involvement in the film has been rumored for a while, and according to those rumors she may be playing a doctor with connections to Ultron, who is tasked with Tony Stark’s medical care. There’s not too much to go on right now, but feel free to speculate on Kim’s character in the comments.

  1. I can honestly say I’m getting a tad worried they are adding another character. I think that makes close to 15 cast members

    2 villians

    Ultron and hydra guy

Captain america, thor, iron man, hawkeye, scarlet witch, quicksilver, vision, black widow, hulk

    Fury and hall

    And now this chic.

….I’m not going to even try to speculate who she will play. But this is getting a bit crowded.

I’m not sure how this will work and I don’t trust wheden to portray all charqcters evenly. Bad news for me.

    • You forgot about War Machine and Falcon.

It is starting to look like too many heroes not enough villains.

      • Ultron comes online. Shield is disabled. Iron Man and War Machine become drones.

      • might be Quake (Daisy Johnson), something like Agent13 in Capt. America winter soldier.

        • Was that the friend of Qwisp, who was also a breakfast cereal years ago?

          • lmao!!! i remember that cereal. tastes like cap’n crunch.

        • I agree, I think Quake is a good bet, especially as Fury’s right hand girl if things go sour between him and S.H.I.E.L.D

          • Or perhaps she could go the opposite route and be cast as Viper, Madame Hydra Herself…

      • I think he is building up to a mega cross-over type film similar to comic books mega cross-overs. Will there be some characters left to minor roles/cameos? Sure but I must admit I would love to see the screen bursting with heroes like a comic book splash page.

      • What if the Heroes turn out to be the villains?

      • Falcon hasn’t been confirmed, as far as I’m aware. The huge list of Avengers should probably be a testament to how strong Ultron will be, not to mention with HYDRA in the shadows. I expect some of these characters to die, as well.

        • Also, with all those different shooting locations, the team will probably split up and fight all over the world.

    • How many speaking characters are in Batman Begins? The Dark Knight? The Dark Knight Rises? Man of Steel? Lord of the Rings? The Hobbit films? Ocean’s 11-13?

      • That’s my first thought too. People complain that certain characters aren’t included in team up films but then complain that there are “too many characters”.

        Can’t win, really.

    • The point of Avenger”S” is there is progressively more of them, its not like there isnt individual films to highlight characters.

    • Have you seen Lord of the Rings… How many main characters were in that movie, established over 3 movies???. All of Iron man, cap, thor, shield, have been established over some 2 movies each, If you think about it; new characters make complete sense.

    • I see what you mean but then again the first Avengers did have at least 13 characters to focus on (Avengers, Fury, Hill, Coulson, Loki, Selvig, Pepper and The Other) and Whedon made them work with each character having enough screen time so you can trust him to create an awesome and balanced movie.

    • Vision, Quicksilver, and Scarlett Witch all start off as villains. The avengers have always needed an large essembly to take down Ultron. Plus, Vision alone could solo the whole team.

  2. Hot-tot-tot

  3. Could be Dragonfly, Meiko Yin, of The Hand? Basing this solely on her being Korean which is probably not the best way but it’s fun to try.
It could could be an interesting lead in to Ant-man.

  4. I bet she’s going to be the Mandarin. If you look at some of the older story arc’s the mandarin was actually a man in a female’s body!

    • OMG your right! Li Mei!

      • No, she can “Lay Me”!

    • I hope not!

      • I’d think if she was playing an original character, Marvel would be a little less coy regarding her character’s name. Telling us the name of an original character still wouldn’t give away any of the plot.

    • Or she could just be an original character, like a scientist who helps create Ultron. Not every cast member has to be a comic book character. Look at Selving, Coulson and The Other from the first Avengers.

      • *Selvig

  5. This movie is getting too overcrowded. Marvel is losing it’s mind. Joss Whedon doesn’t know what he’s doing. The casting is awful. She doesn’t resemble the character she’s tapped for even though we don’t know who it is.

LMAO. Are there any other half witted comments about film production that I might have missed? You’d that that 99% of the internet are film students.

    • ” She doesn’t resemble the character she’s tapped for even though we don’t know who it is.”

That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever…

      • Whoosh!

        Went right over your head.

        • lol…out loud even!

  6. Wild guess but I’m thinking MAYBE JOCASTA? Since there’s Vision now.

    • If she is Jocasta, it would likely be another mostly reworked character since she was based on the brain patterns of Wasp :P

      • So what if she´s the Wasp? She was Asian in the Ultimate line after all.

        • Wasp works for me but without her in the universe already, Jocasta would have to be reworked (though I personally like the character as I truly like Vision and all of the Pym-related canon).

  7. Rumiko maybe? I’ll admit I’d have been super happy if it was announced she’s playing jan, but that’s not gonna happen.

  8. She’s probably Lady Deathstrike, since Josh already stole Quicksilver , and Scarlet Witch from the X-man universe and totally changed their origin story.

Which is totally disrespectful to the X-men franchise.

    • He didn’t steal the characters from anyone, he had a right to use the characters he loves and he took it. Besides since it’s disrespectful to X-Men then having them in an X-film and have them be evil or not mention their Avengers membership would be disrespectful to the Avengers franchise, but then again that just sounds stupid so why don’t we just wait to see what he does with these characters before we judge.

      • Actuallt, it was the guys doing the X-Men movie who tried the end-run of using Quicksilver to undercut the guys doing The AVENGERS. Quicksilver was probably not needed for the X-men movie, but his appearence was written around the name to try and steal a march on The Avengers movie.

        • *actually*!

    • Last I checked, Witch and Quicksilver have been Avengers for about 40 years.

      • Word, Mike.

      • Actually, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were with The Avengers longer than with the X-men and Brotherhood of Evil Mutants combined; their tenure there was actually pretty short. They will be remembered as Avengers more so than as members of the X-Universe by most as well. Incidently, one of my favorite teams of Avengers was when the team was Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, along with Captain America as leader, Hawkeye, Goliath, and Wasp (with guest appearances by Black Widow). {Not to take away from other Avengers teams, as there were several I liked quite a bit}.

        • Plus, depending on the status and direction of The Inhumans, Quicksilver is directly related to Crystal from that team, so another reason to have him in the Marvel features.

        • They were with Magneto first in the X men Universe. But they were Avengers longer than they were in the Brotherhood.

          • uh … in the comic books they’re in the SAME “universe” — X-Men & the Avengers are different comic books and stories
but they’re all part of the larger whole – ie. the Marvel comics … universe 616

            get your analogies right -

            • I think that most, if not all discussion of Marvel character involvement with teams tends to revolve around the studio movies, so most analogies will be taking into consideration that there are multiple studio universes and not comic titles.

        • I agree that they will most likely be remembered more for their Avengers affiliation than their X-Men affiliation, especially after the new movie is released and brings in over a billion dollars worldwide, however they did both first appear in X-Men and are children of the X-Men’s most popular Villain. When I think of them I always think of them as Mutants first, Avengers Second, and Villains third, but I am a Twenty-Five year comic book collector so I imagine my thoughts are completely different from those of the average non-comic book readers.
I would like to see them used properly in an X-film, but as of yet, I haven’t really enjoyed any of the X-films and am not interested in D.O.F.P either. I trust Whedon, I’ve always enjoyed his comic books and his television shows/films, not to mention I thought he nailed the first Avengers film, so, until he lets me down, I support whatever he’s doing.
Also, I don’t think the film will be overcrowded, we already have clear understandings of the Avengers team via the first film and their many solo outings, so all Whedon really has to do is introduce, clearly, three new characters, (Wanda, Pietro, and Vision) and two villains, (Ultron and Strucker), the rest of the new cast will most likely fall nicely into place, unless Kim has been cast as an integral character such as, Quake, Viper, or Wasp (Which I doubt), in which case either add one to the heroes or villains respectively.

      • You should have checked more because they were in the X-men universe first because They were magnetos kids X-men #4. They joined the Avengers after they were in the Brotherhood of evil mutants.

        Google it!!!

        • iirc, Magneto never outright stated he was their father, however, hence the storyline at Wundagore Mountain when Wanda and Pietro investigated their upbringing in Avengers 185 where they learned they had been dropped off by a mysterious unnamed man to Bova, the cow woman created by the High Evolutionary.

Magneto sought them out long after and coerced them to join him as young adults and, even then, withheld his relationship.

          • Actually, I see that Magneto had brought his pregnant wife to Bova and left them until they were later adopted by the Whizzer. Later Magneto rescued the two children from a burning building, which is why they joined his mutant team (feeling obligated).

Magneto didn’t learn they were his children until after Crystal and Pietro had a baby (1982ish).

    • Pick. Up. A. Comic.

      • Know your facts before you negative comment!

  9. some of these people being “fully surprised” that this Korean actress has been cast most likely have not been following the news of Avengers: Age of Ultron. She’s been “semi-confirmed” since… December? Maybe January? So the addition of this character is really no surprise at all.

Also, if the ensemble is to be believed then we have..

Iron Man (Tony Stark) + J.A.R.V.I.S.
    Captain America
    Natasha Romanoff
    Clint Barton
    Sam Wilson/The Falcon

    Supporting characters:
    Nick Fury
    James “Rhody” Rhodes
    Maria Hill
    SHIELD Agents
US Military/a Military force (as seen in the set photos from South Africa)

    Baron von Strucker
    Korean actress
Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch (before they join the Avengers)
Vision (assuming before he joins the Avengers)

  10. She is holding the Mandarin and Iron-Man toy pack…hmmmmmm

    • maybe Lady Mandarin?

      • Man-darin? Naw, Woman-darin!

  11. I would think Mantis would be the obvious choice…with the cosmic side of the world and plant guy Groot ( i.e. introducing the Cotati would not be hard after that ) being in it.

The Celestial Madonna has strong ties to Star Lord, Ultron, Vision, Drax, Moondragon and Thanos plus others over the course of her career in the comics.

Plus her father I think was German so substituting Strucker in his place would not be far off the changes that the Movies have been making.

    • I think if they were using her as Mantis, they’d most likely introduce her in Guardians rather than Avengers. This is all speculation so you may be right, but I think Quake and Viper are the best bets.

  12. This does raise some interesting questions. Could she be playing Madame Hydra?!

  13. She will be Wasp. The ultimate version is Asian American

    • literally no reason to keep that a secret. the reason we aint being told is because her name alone is a spoiler to the story. the character in the comic but have a big role against or with ultron.

  14. she could be Monica Chang who is part of an A.I team in SHIELD and she was involved in one of the ultron stories in the comcis.

  15. Has The Falcon been confirmed for this?

  16. My guess is that she is playing Mantis. The producers would want to keep the Mantis character secret from the fans because her story is very well known by the fans and the story of this character is very unique.

  17. Could be wasp… That would tie onto a ant man movie quite nicely

  18. I can’t believe no one has yet guessed another possibility: that of 1970s Asian Avenger “Mantis.”

  19. I can’t believe no one else has yet guessed another possibility: that of 1970s Asian Avenger, “Mantis.”

  20. Another possibility would be an Asian, female Avenger who already exists, in comics continuity: that of 1970s member “Mantis.”

  21. Since HYDRA is involved in the storyline, my guess is she will be playing Viper.

    • I’m confused… do you think maybe she’s going to be playing Mantis?

  22. There was an article by SR recently about casting decisions being all about business. This is just another attempt to increase the film’s global attraction, specifically Asia. There are a long list of characters in Marvel with Asian origin so it’s not hard to find and integrate one into Age of Ultron.

    • “There are a long list of characters in Marvel with Asian origin” ………………… Yup. Including one actual, female *Avenger* of Asian origin, back in the 1970s: the martial artist known as Mantis! ;)

  23. Wait…is she Wasp? In the Ultimate comics, Wasp was Asian and had some kind of medical experience.

  24. With the reality we now live, I wouldnt be surprised if Marvel cast her as an Asian Ms. Marvel.

  25. I would say the safe obvious choice would be Mantis, the celestial madonna…she has ties to Star Lord, Kree, Ultron, Vision, Drax and Thanos.

  26. Mantis the celestial madonna. She has ties to Star Lord, Thanos, Ultron, Drax, the Kree, Cotati and a host of others. Her father was German I think so replacing him with Strucker might not be a huge leap…possibly..or perhaps he even works for him.

  27. Hmmm, would love to see them add Kang, Skrulls, Whirlwind (o counter Quicksilver), and a “real Mandarin”! Those for villains, and for heroes: Henry Pym as Goliath, and Wasp.

  28. Before we all start trying to guess who she’s playing, I have a serious question. Can she even speak English? The quoted tweet is originally in Korean, and her IMDB page is as barren as they come.

It’s extremely unlikely she’s playing a major character from the comics if she can’t speak English.

    • well there you go. you just answered your own question

      • Perhaps her voice will be dubbed by Cumberbatch.
