Paul Bettany Is ‘The Vision’ in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’

In case any Marvel fans were getting distracted by what actress may have been cast as a future Wasp, the latest reports remind us that in the shared movie universe, The Avengers take top billing for the foreseeable future. Apparently, the artificially intelligent butler of Tony Stark will be getting an upgrade from voice to Vision.

That’s right, Paul Bettany (having previously provided the voice of JARVIS, Iron Man‘s A.I.) is reportedly set to take on the mantle of the Vision, an intelligent android and future Avenger in The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The report comes from England’s Daily Mail, further strengthening suspicions that Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) will be the driving force behind the creation of Ultron, not Hank Pym a.k.a. Ant-Man. While the comic books had Ultron spawned from the mind and work of Ant-Man, Marvel has made no secret of the fact that they are going to be changing canon – and this announcement of Vision’s inclusion adds further evidence of their new take.

The first look at Ultron’s helmet design made the connections between the Avengers enemy and Iron Man’s own armor clear, but now it seems that Stark may be responsible for both the super-team’s robotic foe and its android ally. But just as James Spader’s face and performance will be worked into Ultron’s design, it seems Paul Bettany will finally be lending more than his voice to a Marvel film.

According to Daily Mail, the actor was spotted visiting the film’s production offices this week not to meet and greet, or record some lines, but to endure a team of make-up technicians as they applied various powders and potions on Bettany’s pale skin to bring about the Vision’s chalk-white complexion.” Die-hard comic fans will know that the most popular depictions of the Vision have him sporting his green and red costume, but it sounds like director Joss Whedon is going with the character’s white makeover instead.

If the report is accurate, then the exact means by which Ultron is created become even more mysterious. Early on, it was thought that the easiest way to adapt the typical origin of Ultron was to have Tony Stark’s JARVIS evolve some unsavory ambitions and take a suit of armor for himself. Those theories became less likely when Spader, not Bettany, was revealed to be bringing the villain to life. So where does JARVIS fit in?

It’s too early to tell if JARVIS and Ultron are both the result of the same event, fracturing Stark’s trusty A.I. ally into a light and dark side, or if the butler gains a fighting form to offer his human allies a better chance of survival. We doubt that mystery will be solved prior to the film’s release, but the Age of Ultron is already seemingly being filled with more superheroes than Whedon will know what to do with. Of course, there’s one way Whedon can solve that problem.

Nobody is going to doubt Bettany’s skills, so fans will likely be pleased to know that he (or a digital copy of him) will finally get to appear alongside the rest of Marvel’s most beloved characters. But the cast members themselves have spoken about how Whedon’s story for the Avengers sequel will carry storylines forward – and JARVIS’ ascension to the Vision could be a serious source of that character progression.

The previous team-up forced Tony Stark to ‘make the sacrifice play,’ but will he be as quick to sacrifice his closest friend and AI confidant? Will the Vision find love with the “messed up” Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen)? We’d recommend holding off on theories until Marvel makes an official announcement, but the questions this raises about the overall film – and the films beyond it – are impossible to ignore.

What do you make of the new story for JARVIS? Is this the kind of twist you’ve been waiting for to bring the new origin stories together, or are you concerned there may be too much story for one film to handle well? Share your thoughts in the comments.

  1. this is literally പൊലപ്പെൻ

  2. And there it is a sound casting choice that won’t create controversy or need a defending article. Plot also seems to be nicely coming together and making sense.

We are going to be introduced to Falcon soon, and then Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Ultron,…

    Long live the MCU!

  3. This is ridicules

  4. Guess Bettany will have to watch the movies now.

  5. Its turning out to be like a remake of Short Circuit II only with a slightly larger cast and slightly more advanced A.I. portrayed via the magic of CGI and Mocap…

    • Dos Locos kick your ass!

      Dos Locos kick your face!

Dos Locos kick your balls into outer-space!

      • LOL! I haven’t seen that movie in years and still remember that part.
“Wouldn’t you like to be a Pepper too?”

  6. I’m down with it! Why is the M.C.U. so successful? Because u have two people, Whedon and Feige, who know comics books and how to present them in a way the general public can relate to.
With the announcement of Vision it would appear that beginning with Age of Ultron Marvel is really upping the stakes in the “comic book movie wars”.
At this point my moneys on Marvel.

    • Too many comic book fans such as myself are making way too much of “too many” characters. They did an amazing job in the first one and managed. I think that by the time this is all done we will have one on one scenes for a great action piece then all together against Thanos. Everyone knowing unless Odin is fighting they cannot take him one on one. The possibility of Spidey & GOTG coming in would be crazy and then perhaps too much, but don’t count SM out just yet because the talks are real. Get rid of falcon, war machine, Hawkeye, and Ant-Man (don’t see it, but I hope it’s goid) then add SM, Dr strange ( mentioned in Winter Soldier along with Banners name and foreshadowing Bucky as CA because Chris is out with) I have separated myself from comic and movie so I don’t go crazy about what it was vs. creating a different storyline

  7. If it is really a white face maybe they are going the Iron Lad way, some kind of Iron Man suit but with the face of Paul Bettany for Vision and later maybe he will gain his iconic colors.

    • or the Ultimate version with Vision II, they seems to like Ultimate costume.

  8. Now this is damn cool. I always thought Clark Gregg becoming Vision would have been a cool angle but turning Jarvis into Vision is a pretty intriguing idea also.

  10. You “recommend holding off on theories”, ay? That’s funny because this article is mostly speculation.

Please try to stick to the facts. Cut down on speculation and awful theories about what will happen in a movie that hasn’t even started principle photography yet. Don’t start or continue rumors, they’re usually wrong. You would do your readers a much greater service by simply sticking to the facts. Let the children on the playground speculate about what would be totally boss.

    • My thought is that all the hints and things are leading to the Infinity Gauntlet storyline being played out in Avengers 3.

  11. Bettany is the man.

  12. The Vision was always one of my favorite Avengers. Glad to see he’ll be making the cut.

  13. This is very interesting news. This is the first I have heard of other speculation about Jarvis becoming Ultron, but I have always been thinking about that possibility since IM3 and some of Jarvis “snarky” comments to Tony. I hadn’t thought through the voice actor issue though, so the theory of a split into a dark and light side of Jarvis, one becoming Ultron, the other Vision, is very appealing.
I think Marvel is going to be THE driving force in superhero movies for the foreseeable future. As much as I love the DC characters too and want to see them in movies, Marvel has definitely got too big of a jump on them and built their universe too well for them to catch up anytime soon.

  14. Soooooooo, how about that Batman vs Superman movie, LOL

    • I can’t wait for batman and superman. I wasn’t a big fan of the first avengers movie so I’m not all that excited for this one. I will probably watch avengers 2 several weeks after it releases, but I’ll be watching B/S opening night.

  15. Too many characters connected to IRon man…looks like RObert Downey will be getting $50M+ pay day for every movie !

  16. Geez, you got a whole lot of speculation out of 1 line rumor that someone supposedly saw Bettany being tested for make-up. Let’s reign it in a little until we have some actual information to go on.

  17. wonder if they’ll have Vision still use Jarvis’ voice and personality…

    • I think Vision will be a mix of Jarvis and Ultron in a way, he will be more advanced than JARVIS, but have more morals and humanity than Ultron. I think the voice and personality will probably shift slightly to reflect that. For JARVIS, Bettany took on more of the classic British butler voice, however, I’ve heard him play more evil roles where his voice becomes more aggressive, so I think he might go more with that.

  18. hell yeah.

    • Of the three Avengers that have to be introduced, I think Scarlet Witch will require the most introduction. Quicksilver and even Vision have been seen in several incarnation in popular culture, and even I, a person who has never read an Avengers comic in her life, know quite a bit about all three characters from just watching the several animation series that have been out. Quicksilver is just a more arrogant version of the Flash, I think he can be introduced pretty quickly. Vision as I said has been seen in many a series before, and I kind of think of him as the android version of Martian Manhunter considering his larger-than-average power set.

I think they will be able to introduce them all rather well all depending on what their capacity will be in the movie. Vision will probably be introduced and built up over the course of the movie, Quicksilver and Scarlet will probably be introduced quickly in some fight scene and then develop as additions to the team from there. As for villains, Ultron is not really a hard concept to understand, the killer AI is not a new thing. As for the Baron, they will probably introduce him in exposition since he is one of Cap’s villains and probably has a history there.

    • Too many ppl here are too tripped out over the origins of these characters! NOBODY except the actors, writers, producers, and directors know any of that so to be as goofy as some ppl are acting is hilarious.
EVERYONE is speculating, and that is fine, that is fun! but to think you actually know what is going to happen and to say that your giving up on the MCU is absolutely ridicules, Just Calm down a bit and be happy we are getting these movies! And be truly happy that you are not a DC only fan, because those fans have a reason to be pi$$ed…
most of us CBM fans are giddy that we are getting 2-4 CBM a year, while the DC only fans cannot get 1 a year and it is more like 1 every 3-4 years!

I read thru the comments and it makes me smh when I see ppl that are mad at this and giving up on that, the only one that suffers then is YOU! you know who you are and you know you have NO CLUE how this movie will pan out, so take a valium, drink a beer and just be happy that we get to see some of our favorite CB characters and although they may not be exactly the same as their CB origins they are coming to life on the big screen. That, to me is something to be happy about Not stressed about.

      • So when someone says this about Avengers it’s nonsense but if they say it about B/S it is justified?

  19. How could he be vision and JARVIS?

    • Good question? … I`m confused, doesn’t Paul Bettany supposed to be J.A.R.V.I.S.? so whats next J.A.R.V.I.S. becomes The Vision?

      • People assume, reasonably, that there will be a some connection between Ultron, Jarvis (Tony’s AI), and Vision. There probably is, but Paul Bettany may provide a different voice for Vision that sets him apart, just like James Spader has a different voice from Jarvis. I always imagined Visions voice to be deeper and monotone. LOTR had the guy playing Gimli doing the voice of Treebeard, so nothing is unprecedented.

        Stay tuned, I guess.

  20. I was hoping they would introduce a hologram version of JARVIS at some point in Stark’s lab, and that Paul Bettany would play the holographic incarnation. I expected it to happen in Iron Man 3, but considering the lab was destroyed and had minimal screen time I guess it would have been a waste. But turning him into Vision is not something I even considered.

  21. I think this is a good idea. Once again marvel knows how to cast and develop a story in a much better way than their competition. Kudos to Whedon and Feige!

  22. All I can say is, thank God it isn’t Vin Diesel. That dude mumbles his way through every line.

  23. Now this is top notch. I cannot wait to hear a more in depth summary of the movie to make me geek out even more.

  24. Who is going to play MOONKNIGHT!?!!!

  25. Dang it MARVEL!! Now,I have ta see A2 (still won’t watch Ant-man though). Wanda/Vision “One-Shot” anyone? :D

  26. Since scarlet witch and vision are being introduced I am hoping that somewhere down the line (maybe avengers 4) she will get married and realized she can’t have kids with an android and lose her grip on reality and go bat s*** crazy and BOOM!!! avengers disassembled that way some avengers die making room for more heroes (Luke cage, Jessica drew, iron fist , anddaredevil)who will have their own tv shows that are connected with this universe by this time.

  27. Does no-one seem to remember that the Vision is the first creation of Ultron in his quest to eradicate humanity? Bettany’s voice is likely chosen/programmed by Ultron as he’d be the only AI that Ultron had encountered. Not to mention his logical voice (usually although not always devoid of emotion). Either that, or they’ll simply have it in the same vein as Peter Cullen originally having Optimus Prime & Ironhide, Nolan North as Balder/Jimmy Woo/Chemistro etc in EMH. Voice is much easier to manipulate than appearance.
