For years now people have been listening to the whispers about Avatar, James Cameron’s sci-fi epic that has been nearly a decade-and-a-half in the making.
For Avatar, Cameron has pioneered new technologies in filming that have allowed him to create “photorealistic” CGI images so detailed and textured, they are said to be almost indistinguishable from reality – and did I mention he’s done all this in 3D to boot?
Well, Hollywood directors have seen it; attendees at Comic-Con’s Avatar panel have seen it; now you can see it. Today we have the official trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar – and although it’s not in 3D, the fruits of Cameron’s labors are hard to deny.
Behold: Avatar.
The first Avatar trailer
Head over to Apple.com for HD versions (well worth doing!)
Ok, so there are a few things we’ve been waiting to discuss about this film: Cameron himself has already put forth the argument that with Avatar, we are truly getting something “original” in both content and form. Do you agree with that assessment? Does Avatar live up to the hype of being visually “revolutionary?” And does the story (at first glance) interest you as much as the pretty visuals?
Watch the trailer one more time and then let us know what you think in the comments. For those of you lucky enough (like yours truly) to snag tickets for tomorrow’s “Avatar Day” IMAX extended preview, be sure to look for our review of the event and tell us what you thought about the film in its full IMAX 3D glory.
Avatar will open in 3D and standard theaters on December 18, 2009.

Around the web:

this reminded me of the matrix revolutions animation. Matrix anime or something. it looks good looks like a video game trailer. kind of cartoony.
The trailer makes this a must-see for me, but I have to agree with Ken J. and Vic on this one. We all know that the Na’vi are all CGI, so psychologically we may see ILM and not the revolutionary tech that Cameron promised. And we are seeing it on the small screen and not in 3-D. I am anxiously awaiting December.
I’m speechless.
Can’t wait really. Simply amazing
I still can’t believe people are actually going to drive for miles, and stand in line to see 16 min of a film.
I can’t watch this trailer on my Blackberry and that’s ok, I’m gonna live. The hype is getting to thick for me anyway.
Cameron really said it was “original” in “content”?
Really?
Mr. “Acknowledgment to the works of Harlan Ellison” himself says it’s original content?
Seriously?
I do hope he settled on a payment before production started, and I hope Ursula K. LeGuin got a truckload of money for Cameron to adapt “The Word For World Is Forest.”
If you haven’t read LeGuin’s book, there’s a good synopsis:

Sound familiar?
Why can’t i figure out how to sign in? AGHH!!!!
But yeah, been waiting for a long time to see this Trailer! The CGI looks 100 times better then it did in G.I. Joe – … Looks like a movie that took a page from Final Fantasy or well video games. with the interesting creatures etc..
Definitely different.
very amazing, its the next star wars!
seems like Dances With Wolves meets Jak & Daxter meets MechWarrior.
Doesn’t matter, when this does great in December, could another True Lies or another Arnold centric film be on the way? YES!!!!
I’m liking it, but I don’t want to make any judgements (good or bad) at all now until after I’ve seen it.
Not blown away … but will definitely see it.
awesome
The more you watch it the more you believe it. And the comic con/Avatar Day footage that will be shown really makes the characters believeable, alot more than these fast paced scenes. pause it on the part where jakes avatar screams at the end and tell me you dont think that his face is photoreal. If you still think that face is cartoony than I really dont know what to say, your just stupid lol
CGI looks good. Hopefully there is also a feasible story line to go along with it/
When viewing it inside a small rectangle, the aliens look rather obviously CG. The environment looks pretty real. Will it be different on the big screen? I hope but I actually feel the aliens in district 9 are way more believable than the aliens in this Avatar trailer. However, I’m going to avoid any more news or video clips about this movie like I did with District 9 so that I can truly go into it with a clean mindset.
It looks good so far but to be honest I wish all the hype hadn’t sucked me in as much as it did. I mean, still too early to judge, it looks like a fun movie. I just hope the story is as good as the visuals.
More CG looking than I expected but definitely interesting.
Reminded me of a REALLY good video game. (and I’m sure there will be one.)
Aside from him claiming to have found Jesus’ casket, (To date, the 97th time that’s happened.) You always see something new and fresh from Cameron. He always pushes the envelope and gives you something exciting and extraordinary.
It’ll be a ride, that’s for sure.
We’ll see..
I will judge more based on the look of the big screen. looked pretty good though
It does look almost photorealistic, pretty amazing. Not to bash (because I’m going to the screening thing tomorrow too) but how is this innovation/revolution/etc. though? One can still tell that it isn’t real, it’s just the next step past The Spirits Within and Star Wars and all the great CG we’ve seen so far.
Like I said, not trying to bash as it’s almost perfect. I am so psyched for this! But I’m just confused as to what exactly is so new/insert adjective here about this film… can someone help me out?
The CG appearance you guys are mentioning could be a result of the new 3D tech that will eliminate the “Uncanny Valley effect” in the theater…
I’ll hold my reservations about the validity of the claims about this film until I actually see it.
I enjoyed the trailer but I don’t see the ‘wow’ factor in it. IMO, the Final Fantasy movie that came out in 2001 seemed more realistic than what I saw here. It reminded me of the World of Warcraft video game trailers so I guess I do see the WoW factor, lol.
I’m interested in seeing how this pans out on the big screen.
3 things:
One this trailer was awsome, but I expected much more than what i got. Isn’t the rumor around town that hes denied 8 or 9 trailers aleady
Two as much as I love the mech suits, and boy do i love mech suits. It seams to me they are almost a direct rip-off of the ones used in Matrix revolutions. I think this movie is really gonna change the game after seeing the trailer, its now gonna be like the difference between Transformers: Beast wars and the Michael Bay Transformers. This movie is gonna set the bar higher for 3d and digital effects movies.
Last, I love the Na’vi (spelling?) they are almost cat like with some of the expressions in my opinion.
Is there anywhere else to see the trailer? My computer, for some odd reason, can’t play QuickTime.
@Longshanks
We’ll have it in Flash format here on this same post in the morning.
Vic
Bring on Thundercats!
@ Vic
Cool,thanks.
Try going frame by frame with the part where zoe saldana is firing the arrow. i think its 1:30, you can see they have some animal eyeshine
remember cameron is not fully done adding the photo realistic tech for alot of the parts in the trailer
