Avatar: The Last Airbender Gets New Series

avatar legend of korra series Avatar: The Last Airbender Gets New Series

One of the greatest cartoon television series of all times became what may be one of the most disappointing films of all time a few weeks ago. Yes, I’m referring to Avatar: The Last Airbender, re-dubbed The Last Airbender for the M. Night Shyamalan film adaptation.

The award-winning Nickelodeon television series ran for three full seasons, designed that way intentionally to tell the full story of the legend of Aang, a young Airbender and the last of his people who, with his friends, must journey through the Water, Earth and Fire nations to learn how to master all four elements and save the world from the tyranny of the Fire Nation.

The series aired from early 2005 to mid-2008 and spawned the beginning of a potential film franchise. Due to the cartoon’s critical success and mass appeal, despite the film’s failure to become a big box office hit or win over critics (read our review of The Last Airbender), the creators of the series Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzk knew that Nickelodeon would come asking for more and that’s exactly what they did. Now we have a new series in the works, currently titled Legend of Korra.

The spinoff series, which made headlines back in May when Nickelodeon copyrighted the name, is being created as a more mature show with a new lead character; Korra is the next Avatar, a female teenage Water Bender from the Southern Water Tribe in a series which aims to keep the same sense of fun and adventure as the original. Nickelodeon confirmed a few days ago that the follow-up series would begin airing next year.

The story of the Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the ends of Avatar: The Last Airbender where Aang has now passed away and Korra must learn the fourth and final element from the new last airbender left in the world: Aang’s son, Tenzin.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzk talked about the genesis of the show and revealed a few key details. First off, Tenzin is the son of Aang and – you guessed it – Katara from the original series.

There will be definite tie-ins between the two series but no details were revealed as to what characters may make return appearances. The new series largely takes place in Republic City, a new location devised for the new series, based on designs of 1920s era Shanghai and Hong Kong with some Western influences thrown in as well.  One concept art image for the series (shown up top) has been released for the series and it gives you an idea of what Republic City may look like.

In Republic City, there’s an anti-bending movement taking place and this is where we will start seeing some of the more mature themes of Legend of Korrai unfold.

Here are some answers from the creators to questions you might be wondering yourself:

Avatars tend to live very long lives, how come Aang has passed after only 70 years?

“Konietzko: You gotta keep in mind that he was frozen in a state of suspended animation for 100 years, so he kind of burned up some of his extra Avatar time.”

What motivated the change in gender for the new Avatar and protagonist of the series?

DiMartino: “It’s not so much about changing because we had Avatar Kyoshi before Aang. We’d established that the Avatar can be male or female and we just thought let’s explore one of those more in depth, because Kyoshi was a popular character with a lot of fans and it seemed like a great opportunity to not retread what we’d done with Aang, who was a great hero, we all loved him, but we really wanted to try something different. And we have so many great female fans out there, who really responded to Katara in the first series, we thought we have the fan base who are really going to enjoy seeing the Avatar be a female.”

Konietzko: “Mike and I, we love those characters too, and we’ve encountered countless fans who are male who really like those characters too. We just don’t subscribe to the conventional wisdom that you can’t have an action series led by a female character. It’s kinda nonsense to us.”

It’s a little sad to see our favorite heroes from Avatar: The Last Airbender become history, but at the same time, I am excited at the prospect of another series set in the same world from the original creators and same crews. At Comic-Con 2010 last week, it was also confirmed that composer Jeremy Zuckerman will return to do the music and sound for the series – another great bit of news!

  1. Ok stop complaining… they really couldn’t continue the story much more I mean the war was over. It’s time for a new issue, a new generation. Aang couldn’t live forever just get over it. I’m excited for the spin off.

  2. I think this is a GREAT idea! I literally love the series Avatar: The last air-bender. I can’t wait to see this but what of Sokka and Suki? Do they get married or something? I hope the first episode will show Aang and the others! I really hope this will last much longer then the Avatar! I also hope it will be funny and anime just like the original cartoon! Love the idea! <3 <3

  3. i completley agree with all of you i loved the original avatar series and i did not want to see it end. but the fact is that there wasnt really anywhere to go with it. the main idea of avatar was for aang to end the war by mastering all 4 elements. They could not just create all these new bending styles because then it would be this prolongued series that would make us hate it. although the new plot doesnt seem as good as the original we still have to give it a shot due to the fact that they did a great job with the last airbender series. the only character i could imagine returning would be aang. I know you are saying hes dead because the new avatar is born but he could apear to korra in the spirit world for avatar guidence as roku did for aang. and the last thing is does anyone know when its comming out? i heard july but im not sure….

  4. I’m a 14 year old male. And i absolutely love watching avatar. Honestly, When life was hard it seemed like I could just escape from reality and be brought to somewhere else when I needed to be. I have seasons 1-3 on dvd. And right now… As i write this comment, have them braced vary close to me, I never want to let them go… I’m outraged they have stopped making any more seasons. But most of all… I’m heart-broke of it, knowing I wont be able to see Aang,Zuko,Sokka,Katara,Zuko’s Uncle-General Kyro(I think),Toff,Suki,Appa,Momo Go on one last adventure or anything, Without aA real Good-Bye. And i dont know… But,just to have been watching it for so long…. And for it to be gone in a snap is devastating. And Personally. I kind of think that on the last Episode they left you in the dark with a whole lot of questions: Did Zuko find his mother? what happened to Azula? did Aang and Katara get married? What of suki and Sokka? did they get married too? And zuko and May did they also get married?… i just really feel like you guys blew off the ending we all needed, that was filled with all the answers we needed to Accept and love, and to move on to your new
:”Avatar;Legened of Korra” Mini Series, As much as w loved Avatar…The last Air bender. And I really hope I dont like Legened of korra as much…So i’m not Heart-Broken for the second time… I know Aang and every one is only A Cartoon… But R.I.P Aang, Guitara, socca, Toff, Zuko, Suki, Zuko’s Uncle,Appa,Momo, and any one else I forgot to mention. I’ll deeply miss you all.I really will…

    • welll they did kinda answer the question as to whether or not aang and katara got married, because they have a child together but i completly agree with you about everything else. It really feels like its unfinished…

  5. Ok, this is great and a bitt sad at the same time. Although learning all the elements so fast will make it less intresting. How long will the series go on? i’ve seen people post like 12 episodes? people will be very disapointed as will I. …

    • Ok, They should make it 28 the least and 42 the most episodes. As they shouldn’t show Aang or anyone. No one knows that they won’t explain everything as the second series starts, it will all collide within the series, as if they do that, people will love the show and the interest rate will go high. I also think that the newly Avatar should only know water bending and eventually figure the rest out as in the original, just with a different goal and setting.

      • When you really think about, the original series didn’t focus THAT much on the whole ‘mastering all 4 elements’ spiel – most of it happened off-screen. There’s really no point in repeating the same thing for Korra – it would just make her journey too similar to Aang’s, and it’s pretty important for her character to be distinguished from her predecessor.

Word of mouth has it that if the initial 12 episode line-up is well-recieved, the writers may extend the series. After all, the original series was only set for 13 episodes before it was split into 3 ‘Books’ of 20 episodes apiece (Book 3 was extended to 21 when they realised the finale ‘Sozin’s Comet’ was running overtime).

I agree that they SHOULD give us more episodes though. It seems hardly fair to only have 12 episodes to get to know Korra before we have to say goodbye … Aang had WAY more. I’m not asking for another 60-episode series, but it would be nice to have a larger character arc with deeper character development just like the original. I think they should either make a second season of 20 eps (bringing the number up to about 32), or else do two more 12-ep seasons/books (making it around 36). If that’s the least they do, I think I’ll be happy.

I want Korra and her crew to establish themselves well in the public’s memory before the series is over. Otherwise, it’ll be like the British Tv Series ‘Doctor Who’ was with it’s new Doctor played by Christopher Eccleston – only 13 episodes before being replaced, and so few people really cared enough about his portrayal (only 3 months onscreen before stopping will do that to you).

        So yeah …

  6. why didnt you make an episode were zuko found his mother?? I mean im not mad at the way the series ended however alot of us *people i know who watch it* would have liked to know what happen to her

    • According to Mike and Bryan, they WERE meant to answer the question of what happened to Ursa (it was even storyboarded). Unfortunately, the studio forced them to cut it for some reason. Not ENTIRELY sure why, but I did hear that it was apparently “too dark” for the series or something.

Hopefully, “Legend of Korra” will provide the answers … after all, why TELL people certain things if they become key revelations for the new series? I get the feeling ‘A:LoK’ will have a VERY interconnected story arc which will also answer some of our questions about ‘A:tLA’. I really, REALLY hope so …

Rae 4 months agoI’m excited for it but I remember distinctly Zuko asking about his mother’s whereabouts. Are they just going to leave that alone? What about Azula? Did she just go to prison and thats that? And Aang just dead like that? It just didn’t feel like the right ending. But I’m guessing that in the new series they might do flash backs and such and fill everyone in on what happened in the past. I’m just sayin’

Borjan 3 months agoActually, I just thought of something really brilliant. Aang would’ve died at the physical age of about … 70? 71? The creators say it’s partly because of his being frozen for 100 years, right? But what if it’s more than that? What if, when Azula killed him in the Book 2 finale ‘Crossroads of Destiny’ (temporarily, but still killed him), that ALSO cut his lifespan down a bit? It would make sense – the lightning must’ve struck his heart, too. Also, that would justify ZUKO not living far too long either – he was struck down by Azula near the series’ end, and unlike Aang, KAtara had to defeat Azula in battle before saving him. He may well have died of a heart attack at age 40 or something …

Of course this is speculation, but it DOES make it more credible for at least 2 of the original heroes to be dead here. Doesn’t explain away Toph, Sokka and Katara though – you would think that AT LEAST one of them is alive, wouldn’t you? Especially considering how long a lifespan one can have in the Avatarverse?

And I think they should make a whole book on finding Zuko’s mother because I need some closure on that part. I’m all for them starting a whole new series with a new avatar but first I want to see the original team avatar and if everyone ended up how they were suppose to.

Ps im 16 and my sis is 23 we Love the show, and to see the movie film was a disater from all avatar fans to see because it showed no character from the characters in the show or how the plots were a like.
i really wish i did not hear about this, i am not really excited because you can not just throw away a perfect idea leaving all your fans hoping that Zuko will find his mother, then create a new alternative for the show =(

  9. You guys dont seem to understand, AVATAR IS OVER. SAY GOODBYE! And you guys dont think Aang will be in any episodes?! OF COURSE HE WILL!!! HES ONE OF THE THE PREVIOUS AVATARS!!! THE WHOLE THING WILL BE BASED ON THEM TALKING ABOUT AANG AND HOW HE SAVED THE WORLD!!!! They had PLENTY of episodes with previous avatars! Only true fans would have the BRAINS to figure that out! Come on!

  10. When is the new series going to start? I cant wait and I also hope to see many of our old friends makeing pop in apperances. I am sure we will have all our questions answered. Even if we dont, I cant wait to begain the new journey I just wish this cartoon didnt have to have a end… When I started watching thiss cartoon I had just gave birth to my son. I like this cartoon because it has morals and values that alot of cartoons today dont have. I actually liked the movie.I know most didnt and it it noway compaired to the cartoon but how could it really. I want to say thank u to the makers of this cartoon and i cant wait till my son is really old enough to understand the cartoon. He just turned 1 so he just likes the pictures right now i think but I love the show and cnt wait to see what u will bring to the world next.

    • I disliked the movie because I felt the plot was weak and all over the place, the acting was mediocre for the most part, and the characters were as deep as cardboard. I know you shouldn’t compare them too much, but even without considering the cartoon the movie was, in my opinion, one of the worst things ever made. I particularly hated Katara’s narration – films need to SHOW, not TELL, that’s what novels are for. I just couldn’t bring myself to care about the characters, or their world, or the plot the way a film like the ‘Lord of the Rings’ films could do. I tried to ignore the casting and separate it from the cartoon, and even then it was no better, IMO.

But if you liked it, that’s your own God-given right. I can’t say I understand it, but I at least accept it.

Why you’d want this story to keep going, I have no idea. Any planned out story that’s worth the benefit of the doubt NEEDS to have a beginning and end – constantly extending it just because it’s popular messes up the story and brings people to hate it later on. But I agree that we need more good cartoons like ‘Avatar’ – with a few exceptions like ‘Samurai Jack’, there’s not many good US shows anymore. Oh, how I miss the 90′s and their great cartoons …

It hurts most because there aren’t any new cartoons that match Avatar, so once it was done we weren’t left with much, were we? *sigh* Well, we just have to hold out hope and keep our eyes open, don’t we?

BTW, I’m glad you’ve got things to show your son when he gets older. I wish you and him luck, and I pray that when he’s older there’ll be some more good series on Tv for him to both learn from AND be entertained by.

  11. Ok first of all, I can understand why some of are disappointing that aang will not be in this and that they skipped so many. I can also understand why some of you are looking forward to this.

Personally I agree with both sides. Here’s my opinion: Now I am not all against this spin-off because I want to how they portray this Korra. However, I believe that they should’ve had a post season and THEN went into the spin-off. Look at it this way: there were so many unanswered questions. What happened with Aang and Katara? What happened with Zuko and his mother?

Here’s what I think they should do: First they should do a post season where we get our answers and the gang deal with some kind of post-war situation. Then on the last episode of the post season, they should give some kind of hint on the spin-off. For example, they could show Korra being born, her mother naming them, her family finding out she’s the next Avatar.

Again I’m looking forward to this spin-off, but as I’ve said the post season shouldve came first. Who knows? Maybe we’ll get our answers in the spin-off.

  12. The concept is great and all, but I wanted to know who zuko’s mom was :(

    • Yeah me 2

    • me to and i agree with u i thought if there where going to make a next one it would be about zuko fining his mom or something like that

    • Zuko’s mom is Roku’s grand daughter.

      • We know who she is, we want to know where she is and what she’s been up to for the last, oh I don’t know, 20 years. I want to know her story. More than what we’ve been given.

        • I heard that there’l be a comic series released this year ( or was it next year) by DarkHorse comics which will be a tie between the first series and the second, so we’ll PROBABLY learn from there. If you guys aren’t too upset by the medium change, you should be on the look-out for it.

  13. I have commented before and love reading everyone’s comments about the new series. So in the new series I heard that they’re going to reveal all the answers in the last airbender that we all wondered about like what happened to Zukos mom, what happened to the gang after the war ended, and what happened to Aang and Katara. Everyone thinks that they wont reveal it because it will be completely different from the new series but they are going to answer all these questions through Tenzin’s memories in the form of flashbacks when he was a child. So when Tenzin appears on the show they will show memories of him when he was young. It might feature Aang all grown up and the battles he faced after the war for example. Also Korra has to be at least 20 years old if the producers followed the same guidelines as the last airbender. Think about it the avatars is announced when he or she turns 16 so if she were to have mastered 2 other elements other than her native one (water) it would have taken at least 4 years. I know it only took Aang 9 months to “master all the elements” but he didn’t really master any except for air he was simply just a good bender in each. It took Avatar Roku 15 years to master air, water an earth and that’s practicing every day.

  14. Well, I’m excited for this show, I’m just REALLY going to miss Zuko and Sokka ):
I will be VERY disappointed if this isn’t as good as the original series, but I’m not letting myself think that :P
I hope this one has a complex, interesting plot, and can’t wait to see how it is!
I just wish there was zuko! hopefully there will be a character like zuko (:

  15. I was wondering if they will ever answer the questions of Zuko’s mother and where she is.. Will he ever find her?

  16. I would just like to point out that Kattara and Aang to get married… But Katara will die giving birth to her last and 3rd child. If you remember the fortune teller episode in the first book of the original series…

    • Incorrect. If you take the fortuneteller’s words at face value, she said Katara would die, peacefully in her sleep, after the birth of her 3rd GRAND-child, not child. So she could have even more kids, who knows? Aang kind of needs to repopulate the Airbenders and all that, so he’s probably going to have at LEAST 3 kids for that purpose. Assuming those kids all have lots of kids, give the whole thing 200-300 years and there will be LOADS of Airbenders – perhaps upward of 100, if not hundred. Mind you, that’s my optimism talking, and for all we know, not ALL future Airbenders need be decended from Aang anyway …

  17. Im hoping to see sokka as an old man and a member of the white lotus.

  18. I want to know what happend to zuco’s mom. and I agree that seeing Soka as an old man as a member of the white lotus would be cool too. I think there should be a young water tribe girl who dreams of being a water bender but isn’t supposed to be one. but does everything she can to show that any thing is possible and that she really is a bender though she was told her efforts were usles. She could follow Korra. I’m a huge fan of Katara and I would like her to be in the new series in some way.

    • But what’s the point of having a character exactly like Katara was? That would just be repeating an old character arc that’s been done before (and what’s the point of having ANOTHER waterbending girl not allowed to bend, when there’s no reason the laws haven’t changed thanks to Katara)? It’s a lot better to come up with new characters and plots, ones which fit in with the overall story.

What happened to Zuko’s mother WILL be addressed, the writers have claimed, but it may not be in the show (so they might publish it in a supplementary book or comic, etc.)

Katara would be great to see again, but even if we see her it may not be a LIVING Katara that we see … after all, odds are Aang will appear to Korra the way Roku did to him, and who says ONLY the Avatar will appear somehow. If nothing else, we’ll probably get flashbacks much like ‘The Avatar and the Firelord’ did for Roku and Sozin.

  19. its going to be cool seeing what happens after the war. but im gonna miss all of the characters from the previous series. i think they should make a series about aangs like after the war then this series.

  20. i want to know what happened to zuko’s mom and what happens after the war like how zuko and aang change it

  21. I’m hoping that while airing the new spin-off The Legend of Korra that they would make a mini series of zuko seeking out his mother. I really want to see what she looks like after what happened when he was younger. Did he ever find his mom? Alot of fans want to know what happened.

  22. Why is Aang’s son just an air-bender if Katara was a water-bender wouldn’t Tenzin be part water/air bender? It would be cool to see that.

    • Because nobody but the Avatar can bend more than one element – most likely a contract with the spirit world so that they don’t mix in ridiculous ways, or something. It’s something of an unspoken rule that only the Avatar can bend more than one though – it’s never stated outright, but that’s pretty much how the creators INTENDED the series be seen.

Just because Tenzin cannot bend water doesn’t mean his brother(s)/sister(s) can’t, nor is it ever stated that he’s the only airbender left now. He’s probably just the best out there, and is Korra’s teacher because: (a) she’s his father’s reincarnation; and (b) as a (presumed) Air Nomad, he feels a sense of duty to guide the next Avatar and be her Airbending teacher.

On another note, the series has been expanded with Mike and Bryan adding at LEAST 14 more episodes following the original 12-part miniseries (most likely to be a theoretical ‘Season 2/Book 2′. Apparently, they’re considering an ‘antagonist-of-the-season’ structure for this show as opposed to the original series’ overarching story arc, which would certainly be a good way of distinguishing this series from it’s predecessor and allow it to establish its own sense of in=dentity while it still airs.

  23. When is the new season going to air, I cant wait to start watching it, I have been watching it since it first came out and im 18 now i wanna see the new season, It’s going to be interesting seeing how the “world” turned out after the war.

    • Sometime next year. I’m not sure when, but next year. It was originally going to be just 12 episodes long, but has recieved an extension of at LEAST 14 eps to make 26 in total (so far).

Originally it was going to come out this year, but personally I think that waiting for them to get it right rather than rushing will make for a LOADS better show when it finally comes out.

  24. When is the new season going to air?

  25. hey can anyone tell if there is any site where i can read online full story of avtar ..plese help me..

    • Go to the ‘Avatar the Last Airbender Wiki’ – it has a full summary of every episode, you just need to bring up the list.

Better yet, if it’s not inconvenient then it would be good to watch all 61 episodes (best to do so without spoilers, though, but it’s entirely your choice.) There are three Seasons (or ‘Books’) and the first two have 20 episodes, the last has 21.

      Hope this helps.

  26. i’d say im one of the biggest fans of avatar, though im 16 :D. the original series were FANTASTIC and when i read that there will be new avatar i was kinda sad and happy , cuz i did want to know what happened after war,but i guess it will be fun to watch the new series of avatar, we just have to give it a chance.although im not satisfied about the future thing.i liked when there was no cars or motocycles n stuff.it would be AWSOME if there was one of the old gang characters, i’d like to see toph in new series….

  27. I’m really gonna miss Zuko!! I think I might watch it but it just… won’t be the same… I was really shooting for Zutara to happen in the end… *sighs deeply and shakes head* Oh well. There better be a character as funny, cynical, and might i say *coughs* hot as Zuko was and maybe they could get it right this time! Water and Fire go together!!!! <333

  28. They should have made a mini series or movie of how the country recovered after the war. I wanted to know if the gang stayed together or did they go their separate ways. It should of shown how Zuko got the truth out of his father about what really happened to his mother. The last episode kept us guessing whether Zuko found out if his mom was still alive or dead. That is one mystery that was not solved yet.Basically, the mini series or movie should be based on Zuko finding his mom. Hopefully this next series will go in depth about zuko’s mom and what aang’s gang did after the war. Maybe they will make an Last Airbender 2 and it would be way better than the first one. I hope.

    • Don’t worry, myla – while it’s not on TELEVISION, there WILL be a series set between A:TLA and “Legend of Korra” – in comic form.

DarkHorse Comics is releasing a series which is set to bridge the gap between the two series, and will probably answer questions like how the world will recover after the war and what happened to Zuko’s mother. So… looks like fans will get their “Book 4″ after all. :D

  29. I’m so sad that most of the first seasons carrectors(sp?) are gone. i wish they throw in a couple episodes that tell whathappend with Kataraan Aang. But I cant wait for Avatar: The Legand of Korra!

    • There will be a comic series released next year, which will “bridge the gap”, so to speak, between the series and answer some of our questions, so hopefully we’ll see what happens with Aang and Katara.

It WAS revealed, however, at ComicCon that they had three kids total and that Tenzin, the youngest, is the only Airbender. Tenzin, in turn, is married with 3 children (all airbenders) and a fourth on the way already.
