avatar legend of korra series Avatar: The Last Airbender Gets New Series

One of the greatest cartoon television series of all times became what may be one of the most disappointing films of all time a few weeks ago. Yes, I’m referring to Avatar: The Last Airbender, re-dubbed The Last Airbender for the M. Night Shyamalan film adaptation.

The award-winning Nickelodeon television series ran for three full seasons, designed that way intentionally to tell the full story of the legend of Aang, a young Airbender and the last of his people who, with his friends, must journey through the Water, Earth and Fire nations to learn how to master all four elements and save the world from the tyranny of the Fire Nation.

The series aired from early 2005 to mid-2008 and spawned the beginning of a potential film franchise. Due to the cartoon’s critical success and mass appeal, despite the film’s failure to become a big box office hit or win over critics (read our review of The Last Airbender), the creators of the series Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzk knew that Nickelodeon would come asking for more and that’s exactly what they did. Now we have a new series in the works, currently titled Legend of Korra.

The spinoff series, which made headlines back in May when Nickelodeon copyrighted the name, is being created as a more mature show with a new lead character; Korra is the next Avatar, a female teenage Water Bender from the Southern Water Tribe in a series which aims to keep the same sense of fun and adventure as the original. Nickelodeon confirmed a few days ago that the follow-up series would begin airing next year.

The story of the Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the ends of Avatar: The Last Airbender where Aang has now passed away and Korra must learn the fourth and final element from the new last airbender left in the world: Aang’s son, Tenzin.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzk talked about the genesis of the show and revealed a few key details. First off, Tenzin is the son of Aang and – you guessed it – Katara from the original series.

There will be definite tie-ins between the two series but no details were revealed as to what characters may make return appearances. The new series largely takes place in Republic City, a new location devised for the new series, based on designs of 1920s era Shanghai and Hong Kong with some Western influences thrown in as well.  One concept art image for the series (shown up top) has been released for the series and it gives you an idea of what Republic City may look like.

In Republic City, there’s an anti-bending movement taking place and this is where we will start seeing some of the more mature themes of Legend of Korrai unfold.

Here are some answers from the creators to questions you might be wondering yourself:

Avatars tend to live very long lives, how come Aang has passed after only 70 years?

“Konietzko: You gotta keep in mind that he was frozen in a state of suspended animation for 100 years, so he kind of burned up some of his extra Avatar time.”

What motivated the change in gender for the new Avatar and protagonist of the series?

DiMartino: “It’s not so much about changing because we had Avatar Kyoshi before Aang. We’d established that the Avatar can be male or female and we just thought let’s explore one of those more in depth, because Kyoshi was a popular character with a lot of fans and it seemed like a great opportunity to not retread what we’d done with Aang, who was a great hero, we all loved him, but we really wanted to try something different. And we have so many great female fans out there, who really responded to Katara in the first series, we thought we have the fan base who are really going to enjoy seeing the Avatar be a female.”

Konietzko: “Mike and I, we love those characters too, and we’ve encountered countless fans who are male who really like those characters too. We just don’t subscribe to the conventional wisdom that you can’t have an action series led by a female character. It’s kinda nonsense to us.”

It’s a little sad to see our favorite heroes from Avatar: The Last Airbender become history, but at the same time, I am excited at the prospect of another series set in the same world from the original creators and same crews. At Comic-Con 2010 last week, it was also confirmed that composer Jeremy Zuckerman will return to do the music and sound for the series – another great bit of news!

  1. I agree with all of you when it comes to a series were they find Zukos mom. But i want to see what happens with Sokka and sukki (sry if i spelled name wrong) and if they had a kid. I also want to see what happend to toph we know she was the only one who didnt fall in “LOVE” in the series so what happend to her. And is Zukos sister in jail with her father still. And if most of you guys are real fans i wonder if the cabbage man has a son (the man Anng Kattara and sokka always run into). And the story takes place 70 years later so Anng would be 185 years old when he dies. One thing iam hopeing for is that some air benders excaped when the fire nation attacked and started a secrete air bending city because they never actully show the war so maybe so excaped and got away. Also iam wondering if they rebuit the southern water tribe ( or is it the north the fire nation got to) were they killed katarras mother and there are alot more water benders.

    • It’s funny how I just found this article and read this comment….AND how basically every single one of your questions are answered in the books of Legend of Korra. If you haven’t already, you should definitely watch it! 3 years later!

  2. who is going to be the nest avatar.

  3. well obviously its Korra Its in the name legend of korra

  4. they said there would be a key connection between the two series. maybe it’s about zukos mom, or just the fact that aang had a son. and the have to put in a great great grandson of the cabbage man.

  5. okay so like this was from 2010 and it says the new show comes out next year. its 2012 and the show hasnt came out yet.WHEN IS IT REALLY COMING OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

  6. I thought it was coming out soon but i havnt seen a comercail for it yet but i think its etheir soon or at the end of the year there having a pilot

  7. I just want to know what happens to all of the original characters, i know aang dies but what happens to katarra, toph, sokka + sukki and zuko + May, also what happens to zukkos mom and azula ??? Does zukos uncle die ? One more thing, when is this show coming out !!!!???? I really am dying to know when , it looks so exciting !!!!

    • katara is still alive and has kids with aang toph has a daughter named com. lin bei phong and it comes out on april 14th 2012

  8. this series looks exciting, its a shame tho that we wont see any of the original characters in the new series, however i heard somewhere(not on wikipedia) that thè legeñd öf kòrrà may come out in the summertime of 2012

  9. Ive heard there not going to be all the old charachters in the new show but a couple of apperances and thats all about them and maybe some flashbacks like in the Avatar State when shes makeing a dissision she will see flashbacks of Angs past and dreams of what happened after the show ended.

  10. Started watching the new avatar looks really exciting. The only thing that bothers me is we never saw how things developed into this or how aang died and what happened to other old characters. Hope things about this is put into the new series as that would be cool. prefer kid version aang though even though I don’t know much about the grown up version of him. But hopfully all will be explained. xD

  11. I think by taking the new season 70 years into the future is a b**** too mutch. Their’s so many loose ties at the end of the original Avatar: the last airbender. Like the story of Zuko’s mother, later years of team avatar and many more things, i actually thought i had come to the conclusion that their would be a series like this at the end of the origiinal series when zuko confronts his father askin what happened to his mother. The legend o Korra will be a good series, but i think if they really wanted to keep the fan base alive they would have stuck to the original plot and characters. The new series is also a bit too “anime” for me, and is set too much like other shows, the original series had a unique touch to it that made it more interesting and captivating. Anyway, i just wanted to put my idea out, too many loose ends in the original story has got me wondering about things.

  12. Legend of korra was good but not so good. it ends so fast and it looks like they were in new york or something. it would be cool if you would bring another series maybe when aang and all the original characters are alive a little grown up. how did apah die or toph, suko, sokka or bring a series of an avatar before aang or something.

    • It’s Appa, not Apah. :)

The problem is that when the came up with it, they’d only planned for a single story arc of 12 episodes, and it was crammed into that. What we got for “Book 1: Air” would’ve been better as a 20 episode season like the original series – it would’ve given us breathing room, and episodes in which the storyline relaxes to provide Character Development (instead of EVERYTHING being about the main plot). That was one of the original series’ strengths – we got time to really care about the characters and what happened to them, and we were allowed to relax a little more and catch a breath. But because they focused too much on a complex plot, the intricacies behind everyone got kind of lost in the hubub of the story. It was good, but it could’ve been so much better.

If you want to see Post-War stories, look for the “Avatar: The Last Airbender” comics by Dark Horse Comics. They are canon, and show what happened after the war. The first story arc – “The Promise” – is finished, and the next one – “The Search”, in which we’ll FINALLY learn what happened to Zuko’s mother Ursa – will start up next year.

Oh, and “Korra” will have 3 more “Books” coming up – Book 2 will have 14 episodes (or chapters) all up; and Books 3 & 4 will have 13 episodes each. Thus, the show will end on 52 episodes in total. Hopefully the characters will get more time to develop and grow before their story ends.

    • I agree they should continue with Aang and his friends maybe it would be interesting to make a fire nation rebellion that aang and the gang has to defeat or aang and the gang should have to find Zukos mother or something just to continue with the series of Aang. I just want Aang and the other original characters to have their series continue. Have some sort of rebellion or something. I think it would be cool if Katara or sokka would be kid napped to give the gang some drive it would be very interesting. Just some ideas

  13. I was wondering if there are going to make a new series about aang and his gang there is so much questions that need to be answered and might as well make a new show answering those questions right…….. Hopefully they do make a new series PLEASE MAKE A NEW SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. I like it I hop there is a new one

  15. The creators of Avatar should read this

  16. I’m a big fan of Avatar. And I recentely watched “The ledgeng of korra”. I like the new series but much as the original series. I like the old team. I missed Aang and his crew so much. I would b so happy and mad to see them in another animated series. I was hoping “The Promise” & “The Search” hopefully will become an animated series instead of continue via comics. I don’t know why the creators could not understand there are lots of fans who are awaiting to see our old team back. In my country it’s hard get these comic books sometimes. And finaly I wish let the creators come with an idea to make another animated series with Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Appa, Momo..etc. I just love them so much.

  17. When Is The New Series Of The Last Avatar AirBender Comin On Tv?
