James Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster Avatar is one of many films that will most likely have a huge presence at this year’s 2009 San Diego Comic-Con.

Thanks to Coming Soon (and IESB), we have a first look at the banner for Avatar, which is already hanging up in San Diego, three weeks in advance of the convention.  Unfortunately, it’s only a snapshot instead of an officially released (read: high quality) image, but it’s definitely better to get somewhat of a look than no look at all! Check it out below (we’ve tried our best to enhance it):

If the CGI Images in the movie look this good...

Here's a look at the full face of the Na'vi alien

Thanks to Filmonic for the full-face image idea!

This is the perfect kind of banner to tease Comic-Con attendees who will either A) already know what Avatar is and get excited that “more stuff” is inevitably coming, or B) not have heard of Avatar but will should have their eyes snagged by the intriguing image. I highly suspect the picture in the banner is one of the Na’vi, the 10-foot tall blue creatures that inhabit Pandora, the “other world” that most of Avatar is reportedly set on.

One of the lucky people amongst the 1,000 audience members who recently got to see some footage from Avatar said of the Na’vi – “These creatures seem so real, that within minutes you forget you’re watching an enormous and very blue CGI character. Even the eyes are totally convincing. The characters have real personalities and a soul…”

Even though I have some reservations about Avatar because it’s been hyped up so much, I still can’t wait to see what Cameron has in store for us. As far as I’m concerned, December can’t get here fast enough.

What do you make of the Comic Con Avatar banner? Do you think the movie will disappoint, meet, or even exceed people’s expectations?

Avatar is set to open on both 3D and regular screens on December 18th, 2009.

  1. I’m super excited to see the world Mr. Cameron has created for us

  2. wtf is avatar?

  3. @tasouli
    You’re kidding right?

  4. The first image was actually released on Comic-Cons official twitter page. Twitter.com/Comic_con

  5. i cannot wait for this movie i think it will make the leap in film that Terminator 2 did back in 1991 its guna be freaking awsum.

  6. if you read “marketsaw” they have quotes from people who witnessed the screening. They talked about how what they saw exceeded the enormous expectations they had. They mentioned how no matter what the hype is, believe it or not, it will blow you away

  7. you will never see a trailer.

  8. James Cameron says:

“you will never see a trailer.”

I believe this is the real James Cameron, and it seems to be true, we will never see a trailer, you’re just going to have to watch the movie when it comes out, lol.

  9. I am not the Cameron that makes movies just of the same name. But yes, we will not see a trailer. There will be a 30 second teaser released some time down the line and it will be a blur of stills from the movie. not much will be revealed.

  10. lol… when tasouli said “wtf is avatar?” and kahless said…” are you kidding?”… it sooo brought me back to “the sandlot” when the main kid didn’t know about babe ruth. I was just going to say…”The Great Bambino”…lol. Eventhough it was rated pg… they said the “s” word several times… off topic i know sorry.

Hopefully it lives up to its hype because i made the mistake of telling my grandma about the movie and everytime she sees me she’s talking about it and i think it might not live up to “her hype”…lol. First 3d movie she’s going to see is that one so she’s looking foward to it… matter of fact my whole family is since they think that i’m paying for them all. Its ok though… right now they’re only 17 of them by next tuesday 8 more will be here and by the end of august 19 more…so 44? hopefully they don’t want popcorn or soda.

  11. I think him saying that is a smart move. just go see it and hear it from word to mouth

  12. One of the 13 movies I’m seeing this year, give or take…

  13. I still don’t get how Cameron is making a film about those images you see next to your online name. ;-)

  14. @James Cameron

Oh, that’s actually your name? I thought you were trying to be funny calling yourself James Cameron and saying “you will never see a trailer” lol
