[UPDATE: It looks like this may not be from the movie after all. AICN is reporting that James Cameron himself is saying this is NOT what the alien will look like. It's either an older concept drawing not shown to him, or a piece of fan art.]
The anticipation has been slowly building for Avatar, James Cameron’s return to the big screen since Titanic became the biggest movie ever a decade ago. And now we get our first look at one of the aliens from the movie!
I wasn’t expecting the alien to look like this, and in some ways, it kind of hearkens back to the aliens in Cameron’s The Abyss. More details about the movie plus a bigger version of the photo can be seen after the jump.
For a year or two, Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment was developing two projects, Avatar and his Battle Angel adaptation. His goal: Whichever was the first to be ready to shoot, was the one we’d see in theatres come May 2009. Obviously Avatar won out and has a healthy $190 million budget. Wow, Cameron always commands big budgets!
The movie will have some live action elements, and the rest will feature photorealistic CGI (courtesy Peter Jackson’s WETA Digital) and performance/motion capture. The movie stars Sam Worthington as an injured marine in the future who is sent to an alien planet where he becomes a very tall alien (hence, Avatar) and he helps fight an intergalactic war. Sigourney Weaver co-stars. The film is being shot in 3D on the Pace/Cameron Fusion 3D System, which was invented by Cameron and Vince Pace. I’ve seen an NBA game shot on this 3D hi def camera and was blown away!
I’m curious what everyone’s thoughts are on the alien. Chime in!

I think that it kind of looks like H.R. Giger art meets Thundercat’s Cheetara. Not sure if that’s a good thing.
If anybody can pull this off it’s Cameron.
I had seen a version of that image about 3 or 4 days ago but had decided to hold off against posting.
I guess I’ll keep an eye out for an email from the Fox attorneys.

The image originated at http://www.MarketSaw.com and is supposedly one of the main characters of Avatar. I cannot go into details as 20th Century Fox demanded that I retract the image immediately. Well it seems the image got out anyway as I did publicize it fairly widespread.
I think she looks awesome. And when she has her sex scene with the human… oops – did I say that out loud??
Lets just say Cameron’s got one hell of a movie coming up. For more details on 3D movies and technology including the best list of upcoming 3D movies on the Internet – check out http://www.MarketSaw.com ! 3D is ALL I do.

Jim,
I’ve been to your site and I think it’s awesome. I’ve added it to my newsfeed.

Zzzzzz!! I guess after broadway the cast of Cats needed a job somewhere.
I wish someone would look up Avatar in the dictionary and use it correctly.
Is this film going to be in 3D? (Oh no).

This picture dosnt excite me much. It looks like a comicbook image

Also what’s the release date on this flick??
I put an update in; Cameron himself told AICN that it’s either an old piece of fan art or concept art. NOT the final look.

Movie opens May 2009.

Yeah I read that too. My stance is that something is up. There is no way they could allow an image of one of their major surprises be leaked this soon so I am thinking that Cameron may be revamping something to move away from the sketch. A simple comment from Cameron’s circle saying that the image was just fan art would have sufficed, but rather they demanded retraction. Lets face it, they still have almost a year and a half to change their effects around and perhaps thats just what they intend to do to quash this image.
Regardless, I am going to contact his camp too to get some clarity on it. I have updated MarketSaw too.
Not that it matters at this point, but the look and style of this concept drawing reminds me of Camerons drawing style.

It looks alot like James Camerons early Terminator drawing concepts at least the look of it. ???
