20th Century Fox has officially announced that James Cameron has decided that his next projects will be the (to put it mildly) highly-anticipated sequels, Avatar 2 and Avatar 3.

Cameron announced his plans last week to shoot the Avatar sequels back-to-back, but said he was still uncertain as to whether he would take on another project before returning to Pandora – not so surprisingly, he has decided to do the latter first.

Here’s the official word from Fox Entertainment Chairmen Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman:

“‘Avatar’ is not only the highest grossing movie of all time, it is a created universe based on the singular imagination and daring of James Cameron, who also raised the consciousness of people worldwide to some of the greatest issues facing our planet. We had no higher priority, and can feel no greater joy, than enabling Jim to continue and expand his vision of the world of ‘Avatar.’”

Cameron spoke out about the Avatar sequels as well, saying that he and his crew’s goal was “to meet and exceed the global audience’s expectations for the richness of ‘Avatar’s’ visual world” and that both Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 would not “back off the throttle of ‘Avatar’s’ visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world.”

Pandora from Avatar Avatar 2 & 3 Will Be James Camerons Next Films

James Cameron will return to Pandora with 'Avatar 2 and 3'.

Avatar grossed over $2.8 billion (you read that right) in theaters worldwide and was very well liked by both critics and casual moviegoers. There was never a question as to whether or not a sequel (or two) was on the way – we’ve all just been waiting to hear when they would happen.

Both Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 will be less expensive shoots, since Cameron and his crew already have the motion-capture and 3D camera equipment they need to fully realize the extra-terrestrial world populated by the Na’vi. Avatar stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will definitely be back for the sequels, and there’s even been rumblings about how both Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver could reprise their roles as Col. Quaritch and Dr. Grace Augustine, respectively. We’re not sure how that would work but, given the nature of the Avatar universe, it’s certainly possible.

Jake and Neytiri will be back in the 'Avatar' sequels.

It will be interesting to see where Cameron goes, in terms of narrative, with his Avatar sequels. Avatar mixed spectacular sci-fi action and creatures with a not-so-subtle allegorical storyline about the exploitation of natural resources and genocide against a native population (sorry folks – it was kind of like Ferngully: The Last Rainforest meets Dances With Wolves). We’ll see if the plots of Avatar 2 and 3 turn out to be a little less cliché and heavy-handed, while still managing to address the important social issues that Cameron is clearly interested in.

Cameron will work on the scripts for the Avatar sequels early next year, with an eye towards starting production in late 2011. Avatar 2 is tentatively expected to reach theaters by December 2014, while Avatar 3 will aim for a December 2015 release date.

  1. I was really hoping for Battle Angel, but this is fine too.

  2. There are very few back-to-back sequels that work. Matrix, Pirate of the Carribean being two recent examples. Even Back to the Future sequels may have improved with longer development time between them.

    • “longer development time”?
they’re not planned to be in theatres for another 3-4 years.
Cameron already had ideas for sequels before the first film was released, unlike the Wackoffsky brothers (spelling intentional) who decided to cash in on the popularity of the first Matrix film by stating they had intended on making a trilogy all along (horse-pucky).

      • I agree with you and disagree with you.I think the first two Matrix films amazing. But they seemed to have rushed part 3.The best thing that could have happened was to have spaced out two and three. That latter year release for the third to me made everyone tired of the franchise too soon. This is how the films should have been released, which I think could have assisted the construct of the story better( being that there was more time)

        The Matrix-1999

        The Matrix Reloaded- 2003

        The Matrix Revolutions – 2007

I maybe wrong, but I think when theres time between, the people can have more time and actually anticipate the project, rather than get tired of it.The Matrix was a game changer, and alot of people got tired of it b/c everyone was doing the leather, bullet time and sunglasses thing.

    • avatar’s got alot more time with a better filmmaker, should work out all right. at least it’s not 2012 and 2013

  3. I cant wait for this!!

  4. Since the planet seems to be able to capture a person’s spirit, I can see how Weaver and Lang can return. I also think a possible plot could be that the new members of the Pandora population, since they have the technological knowledge and explorer persona, could start exploring the deep seas and find some rather ferocious creatures down there. There are also other planets in the Pandoran system.

  5. This is exciting news.I just hope that the movie get maid in time and release on time and does not get delayed.Just eagerly waiting for next big Cameron movie that is going to be awesome.

  6. What a sellout James Cameron is.

  7. This is so far off right now that I don’t care as much as I probably should.

  8. Sweet, can’t wait.

  9. I hope he does one movie in the oceans of Pandora and one about the desert tribes. No one saw that movie for the plot or characters. We all went to see a fully realized alien world unlike any we’ve ever seen. If he sets any of the sequels in the jungles of Pandora again, I think they’ll fail. We want more Pandora. Not more of the same Pandora.

  10. =(

  11. These will probably be the ONLY 3D films I see in the future. :D

  12. wtf.. 2014… i’d be dead by then…. :D

  13. This is going to be great no matter how he does it, ocean, desert, forrest, etc. We all expect this or expect that and we shouldn’t. Whatever he can dum up in his head is going to be a master piece, hands down, point-blank-period!!

  14. *drum

  15. Holy crap thats a long time to wait! I cant wait to watch them :( Avatar is the best movie i ever saw im pumped to watch the second and third one

  17. Whatever way he makes it I cant wait.

  18. Personally i think James could make Avatar 2 and 3 back to back and relatively quick if he wanted to. He is not waiting because he wants to make sure this is the perfect sequels. He just does not want to do what many people do and forget where he left off and jump into the future 20 years. He as well is filming documentaries about his Expeditions while he is working on Avatar as well, (cant wait to see them). I know James is like anyone else and wants this to be as good as possible but lets face it he does not need time the man has skill when it comes to Directing.

  19. I can’t wait for the next ones to come out avatar is by far my favorite movie

  20. HOLY f****** s***!!!! I SO f****** EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!! YOU ALL HAVE NO IDEA!!!

  21. i cant wait for them to come out :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

  22. i cant wait lol :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Avatar …so rich. Love all the global culture consious awakening. I saw and felt it immediately . Thru tears and laughter. Pity those who cannot. Anxiously awaiting 2 and 3!!!

  24. Thank god there is a sequal.

This is one of the last good movie series left.

  25. I am excited that they are making another three movies, big fan of Avatar! Not only was this a good movie but I can certainly appreciate the amount of work that went into making such a beautiful movie. Can only imagine what the world of pandora will be like under water and in 3D, mmm? Can expect some great things!

  26. Do It ASAP

  27. You have no idea how many people I have seen give his movie a bad review.. (too much CGI), or (The plot was terrible) or (it’s anti Military). I think People have forgotten how to sit and get lost in a movie. yeah, the story has dances with wolves written all over it, but hey, Dances with Wolves was awesome.
