Veteran’s Day: Movies Veterans Love

A day that every American should remember arrives today, the 11th day of the 11th month of every year. It echoes in perpetuity, providing all of us in the US with a continued wall of integrity, protection and honor via the many calls to duty that have been answered for hundreds of years.

Today is Veterans Day.

Have you taken the time out of your day to thank any of the many that have served? We here at Screen Rant wish to thank each and every man and woman that has given their time and often times their lives to ensure a more perfect union. Last year we had one of the most active threads in Screen Rant history, sharing the many great War/Military movies that dance in our memories this time of year. This year, we thought that instead of getting a similarly compiled, all-too-familiar list, we’d ask those who have served to share a listing of “The Movies that Veterans Love.”

24 Season 8 Trailer Revs a Mighty Engine

24 Season 8 Trailer Revs a Mighty Engine

Shortly after 9-11, there was a television series that took viewers on a weekly terrorist-fueled adventure. It was based “in real-time,” covering 24 consecutive hours each season with a cast that has made impressions of all kinds over the last eight years. Taking a “day at a time” had a completely new meaning. Whether they’ve weathered kidnappings, terrorist incursions, caravan ambushes or deadly nerve gas, we’ve all come to love the cast of “24″ for one reason or another.

Fox has released the new trailer for season 8 and after taking a gander, I have to say I am impressed. I’ve been marveling at the cast additions that have sprung up over the last several months and as usual, their shooting schedule is raucous as ever.

Fun For Everyone Halloween Films – Part III!

The belfry has struck twice in the land of Fun For Everyone Halloween Films here at Screen Rant, and the third, final chime is preparing to strike!

Join the Screen Rant team as we detail this last entry for our 2009 Fun For Everyone Halloween Films listing and “chime in” with your own!

5. Edward Scissorhands (1990): I would love to see how something like Edward Scissorhands would go over in today’s society. Clearly, if the school he’d be attending observed any of today’s weapon policies, he’d be expelled instantly and have at least 4 interviews on news programs and talk shows before the week was over about how the institution is “denying his fundamental right to express himself.” Edward Scissorhands reminds me a lot of many of the movies that came out in the late 80s, up until 1990. Lots of teen angst with a dash of fantasy – lots of depression and twisted viewpoint overall.

Horror Plus Crime: Se7en

Welcome to the fourth installment in Screen Rant’s Halloween lead-up series called “Horror Plus” – a feature which showcases one film, dipped into the stapled-flavor of another genre to create something unique, something all its own.

Be sure to go back and review our first, second, and third installments in the series: Horror Plus Comedy: Shaun of the Dead, Horror Plus Sci-Fi: Alien, and Horror Plus Thriller: 28 Days Later. Also look for more that we hope to put up for you to read as we soon arrive at the end of October, 2009!

While we might consider “Crime” to actually be a piece of the horror genre as a matter of course, it’s important to remember many films feature something altogether different when it comes to “crime.” In this case we’re referring to the more procedural aspects of “Crime” and the movie we’ll be focusing on, that dips quickly and often into “Crime” genre throughout it’s runtime, is the movie Se7en.

(The following contains game-over-level SPOILERS for the movie “Se7en“)

Baseball Films – A Lineup of Undeniable “Hits”

Baseball Films – A Lineup of Undeniable “Hits”

In 1982, I remember hoisting little Mike Sopocy on my shoulders after we’d won the Little League Championship Tournament in Schaumburg, IL. In those days, baseball wasn’t just something I participated in during the summer when we were off school, it was a life – complete with its own culture, vernacular and a dedication that continues to fuel my competitive juices.

This week, professional baseball teams from 4 metropolitan cities gather in a variety of arenas to determine who will go head-to-head in the final test of baseball greatness – The World Series – an event that always unveils itself in the crisp days of October.

FlashForward Week 3: Puzzle Pieces in a German Prison

The third week of ABC’s new FlashForward arrives inside the television review halls of Screen Rant.

The world view of what has taken place expands as we begin in a prison in Munich, Germany, where a long-term prisoner named Geyer and a guard begin a discussion that will change many lives and perspectives. What will we find out this time? Will we garner more puzzle pieces that are put in place or only glimpses at the 2 minutes and 17 seconds that had almost all of us spent frozen three weeks ago?

I’ll be reviewing this and future episodes of FlashForward in an ironic and incredibly-appropriate “stream of consciousness” format, giving you essentially what I’m thinking as the show airs. I encourage everyone to send feedback in regard to any of the points below and use this opportunity as a sounding-off point to tell the Screen Rant team what YOU think about this third episode of ABC’s FlashForward!

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Blu-ray Features Review

It’s no secret that X-Men Origins: Wolverine was supposed to be the first “Blockbuster film of summer” – and wasn’t. While it offered some visually striking scenes, and frankly, more Wolverine, there was a lot left that didn’t stoke the fires of love in the house of Wolvy fans everywhere.

While our coverage of the movie conveyed all you’ll need to know about the feature film in general, what follows is a special Screen Rant review of X-Men Origins: Wolverine‘s Blu-ray Special Features – an invasive, probing, look at the details NOT included on the regular DVD offerings, that promises to be at least as sharp as the steel tendrils that pumped adamantium into Wolverine himself. So like Wolverine, strap in, get prepped and ready as we crack the Blu-ray special features realm wide open here at Screen Rant.

The Life and Films of Patrick Swayze

In life, there are often enemies that one cannot prepare for, see, or fight against, even after you understand you’re in a battle not just to win, but to live.

This week, we revel in the life and career of Patrick Swayze, a fallen on and off-screen soldier, who took an imposed 4-month death sentence, and turned it into almost 2 years of life that sealed the deal on a legacy full of integrity, memorable roles and scenes that will continue to push the envelope of television and cinema for many years to come.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 2 Premieres in October

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 2 Premieres in October

The words “Clone Wars” were only mentioned once in the original Star Wars trilogy, while the three “prequel” films (during which the Clone Wars are set) are the generator of all kinds of feelings and mental images that are often hard for me to describe.

What isn’t hard for me to describe is the tone, quality and vision of George Lucas’s most recent animated offering, The Clone Wars – an ongoing series of CGI cartoons that recently received a second season green-light on Cartoon Network. The series will continue to offer literal filler of the years, events, and goings-on which occurred between the feature-film events of the Star Wars prequels.

A Glourious Unreleased Basterds Poster

A Glourious Unreleased Basterds Poster

The imagery of World War II is truly indelible. So many people creating and reacting to so much havoc would make even the most steadfast of wills flinch.

This summer, Quentin Tarantino and company treated us to Inglorious Basterds, which was the seed not only for a great summer movie review, but for a listing of “The 5 Best Films Where Nazis Get Owned!”

The imagery conjured in many WWII films has been at least as powerful as those captured during the actual fight for right in Europe – and now, a new poster has appeared online that offers you even more introspection into the realm of Nazis, Basterds and old-school flavor.

The difference? The imagery in this poster has never been used. Check it out:

Lost Adds Japanese Superstar To Cast

Lost Adds Japanese Superstar To Cast

Lost is one of those programs that will always have it’s own, unique, original footprint on television history. Its power to overwhelm with wonder, character arcs and “flash-back-flash-forward” stories is legendary. As the series enters it’s final season, it promises to continue to deliver, in particular with the recent cast addition of Japanese Elvis-level-star, Hiroyuki Sanada (Speed Racer).

Exactly what role Hiroyuki will be filling is still up for grabs, but suffice to say – mysterious pan-flute-laden music will follow most of Hiroyuki Sanada during his steps in the upcoming final season of Lost.

The ‘Outland’ Will Be Revisited

The ‘Outland’ Will Be Revisited

Grit. Long days in a mine. A sense of somehow restrained lawlessness. A rash of violent deaths. A Marshal taking a stand after finding out that “the company” is responsible for the killings.

It sounds like the makings of a perfect south-Atlantic murder mystery, but it’s actually the outline for a 1981, outer-space-based epic starring Sean Connery (see pic above) that’s about to have new life breathed into it.

Outland offered a great slice of science-fiction wrapped in what (in the future) is supposed to be mundane life on one of the many moons of Jupiter in a “backwater town” but in this case – it was literally out of this world entertainment.

Top 5 Movies Where Nazis Get OWNED!

Top 5 Movies Where Nazis Get OWNED!

Nazis. They’re the focus of those seeking justice everywhere and have been put squarely in the cross-hairs of one of Hollywood’s newest offerings, Inglourious Basterds, starring Brad Pitt and directed by Quentin Tarantino. In the film, Pitt governs a cavalcade of Nazi-killing talent, providing us with what could be an end-of-summer hit.

However, Inglourious Basterds wasn’t Hollywood’s first dance with epic Nazi ass-kicking.

Nazis have rightly been the recipients of the cinematic hammer of scorn for years and now is a perfect time to showcase some of the best of the best examples of those evil bastards getting what’s coming to them.

Screen Rant is proud to corral some of the greatest silver-screen titles that feature unforgiving Nazi punishment, as we review the “Top 5 Movies Where Nazis Get OWNED!”

SR Pick [Video]: Little Anakin Skywalker, 10 Years Later…

While surfing the always-growing expanse of the Interweb during Comic-Con weekend, we stumbled upon this video of (now 20-years-old) Jake Lloyd who played “Anny” Skywalker from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

It seems that Hollywood has created yet another child actor that in general, has benefited from being a “child actor” but still clearly has issues. Check out what I mean:
