The upcoming Assassin’s Creed will be the fourth video game-based film to be released theatrically in a year that has proven to be quite big for this sub-genre. While neither Warcraft or Angry Birds did much to argue for how “good” these movies can be (Ratchet & Clank came and went), they did become the two highest grossing video game movies of all time (worldwide and not adjusted for inflation). Assassin’s Creed may or may not reach similar heights, but the film at least has a promising look to it so far.

A trailer for the Michael Fassbender-starring historical action film with a science fiction twist debuted this past May and there have been various images and behind-the-scenes features seen since, but the film would easily benefit from another look before its December release. Well fear not, as 20th Century Fox has announced that a new trailer will be debuting this week.

Thanks to the 20th Century Fox UK Twitter page, a very clear message has been made that audiences will be able to see more of what the Justin Kurzel-directed film will have to offer tomorrow (at the time of writing this). Check out the post below:

As can be seen, the image features Fassbender and his assassin accomplice (Ariane Labed) standing on the side of a building and teasing folks with more to come. A new trailer will ideally be able to shell out more of what the plot of this film will be. Previous reports have already revealed that, opposed to the game, a majority of the film will focus on the inner-workings of a company known as Abstergo Industries – which uses some elaborate technology to place Fassbender’s character in the mind of an ancient ancestor. This portion of the film will take place in 15th century Spain and the actors will actually speak in Spanish to further meld with that reality. In an attempt to stay true to the game’s roots, it will almost certainly look incredibly stylish in action; something that fits with Kurzel’s style, as demonstrated in his adaptation of Macbeth.

While this all sounds promising enough, with a recent runtime announcement that further sends hope that Fox really wants a good film to come out of this, at the end of the day, it still is a movie based on a video game and that has not proven to be a solid baseline for excitement. Yes, it has Fassbender leading a strong cast and Kurzel has a cinematic voice that should allow the film to look interesting – but is that enough to be truly excited by the film’s potential to be better than just okay?

Hopefully it can be a good-great action flick. There is certainly enough mythology in this series to come up with something cinematically interesting to see play out. Perhaps the upcoming trailer will have a lot more to offer beyond some stylish action scenes. Whatever the case may be, the bar has never been that high to cross when it comes to getting a really good video game-based movie. Hopefully it will be more than a leap of faith to see things coming out strong.

Assassin’s Creed will be released in U.S. theaters on December 21st, 2016.
