Fans of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed game franchise were aware the next title long before Assassin's Creed: Origins was presented at E3 2017, with a trailer and five minutes of gameplay footage. Still, despite the fact that the title was previously confirmed by the developer, with plenty of hints about new additions being made to the gameplay mechanics, as well as its brand new setting, the trailer and preview make for a tantalizing return for the long-running open world series after a brief hiatus.

The trailer quickly immerses viewers in the world of Ancient Egypt, giving players a taste of what it will be like to venture into a setting quite unlike anything the games have attempted before, while also providing some idea of what's in store in terms of the game's content, what it reveals about the titular assassins and, obviously, the group's origins. That's a big promise from a series that has been around for so long, and has had its fair share of ups and downs, in terms of meeting fan expectations and living up to the examples set by its own brand.

But for many, the promise of revealing the origins of a clandestine group of assassins come second to how the game plays, and what new additions players can expect. Additions that will not only keep the series competitive with other AAA open world games such as the PS4 exclusive Horzion Zero Dawn, but also address the shortcomings of previous chapters in the AC saga – namely, Assassin's Creed: Syndicate.

The trailer presents the game in familiar fashion, with a voiceover introducing the new setting and hinting at the conflict between the rulers of Egypt and this budding brotherhood of assassins. There's plenty to take in, as the trailer takes full advantage of the 4K graphics it was presented in, showing sweeping vistas, a bright, vibrant cityscape, and, of course, the pyramids -- which the main character is seen scaling and sliding down in the fashion fans of the series have come to expect. It was also shown that, like Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, this new game won't unfold entirely on dry land, as the character of Bayek is seen manning a boat and dodging a crocodile underwater.

While the trailer offers a glimpse at the game's impressive scope, it's the gameplay that's likely going to be of greater interest for potential buyers. As promised, Ubisoft delivered some new gameplay mechanics that offers players a chance to scope out a new area with the help of Bayek's falcon. In addition, Origins gives players a chance to equip new weapons and items that are found while playing. There's even a demonstration of what the new menu system looks like, and how equipping found items and leveling up the character works.

In all, it looks like the time off was well spent by Ubisoft, as Assassin's Creed: Origins appears to be a welcome return to the series, but with a few new tricks up its sleeve.
