After the release off Fede Alvarez’s 2013 Evil Dead – a remake of the 1981 cult classic – many believed a sequel would soon follow, but that is likely no longer the case. Instead, Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are returning to continue the adventures of Ashley J.”Ash” Williams, picking up with the hero some 30 years after Army of Darkness.

Ash vs. Evil Dead will be a 10-episode TV series premiering on Starz later this year, with production expected to begin this spring in New Zealand. The series will see Campbell reprise his role as Ash, still chainsaw-handed and still working as stock boy. Campbell describes this older, crankier Ash as someone suffering from “survivor’s guilt” and living with PTSD from his years battling the Deadites,

Joining this grizzled, war-hardened Ash will be two of his young co-workers from the big-box store. According to THR, they will be played by Ray Santiago (Touch, Meet the Fockers) and Dana DeLorenzo (Growing Up Fisher).

Santiago’s character is Pablo Simon Bolivar and he’s described as idolizing Ash, acting as his loyal sidekick and believing in Ash when he no longer believes in himself. Delorenzo is playing Kelly Maxwell, a “moody wild child” with a past she’s looking to outrun who is then reluctantly dragged into Ash’s fight against Evil.

The Evil Dead franchise has always been unique in the horror genre for its mixture of comedy and gore. It’s an aspect of the series that grew out of Campbell’s Ash being propelled into the starring role for subsequent films and it’s likely what we’ll see continue in Ash vs. Evil Dead.

Both Santiago and Delorenzo come from a comedy background and they’ll no doubt be expected to juggle the series’ comedic elements along with the outlandishly gory Deadite-slaying. And keeping in the mind the series is set to air on Starz – incidentally, also home to the Raimi-produced and exceedingly bloody Spartacus – fans should expect the Deadite-slaying to include high levels of gore with excessive blood splatter.
