For two decades, fans of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise hoped against hope that a fourth film featuring Bruce Campbell suiting up as chainsaw-wielding hero Ash Williams would materialize. In 2013, a new Evil Dead installment finally did happen, although it took the form of a modernized remake. Naturally, many fans assumed that once the remake happened, that meant the original continuity was dead for good.
Thankfully, that turned out not to be the case, with Raimi and Campbell once again teaming up to produce a new Ash adventure last year, this time in the form of a TV show. Earning critical raves, big ratings, and fan adoration, Ash vs Evil Dead season 1 was a huge hit for premium cable network Starz, pretty easily earning a 10-episode second season.
With only a few months left to go until Ash’s season 2 premiere, Starz seems ready to ramp up its promotional push, opting to release a brand new image of the cast just in time for the long 4th of July weekend. Check it out in it all its butt-kicking glory directly below:
Starz’s official caption for the above image reads: “The Ghostbeaters are ready for Season 2. Hope Evil likes it rough.“ However, viewers of Ash vs Evil Dead season 1 are likely to be a bit perplexed by the image and caption, for one major reason.
Near the end of season 1, it was revealed that Ruby (Lucy Lawless) had in actuality been working against the side of good the entire time, merely using her partnership with Amanda (Jill Marie Jones) to get close enough to regain possession of the Necronomicon and use it to unleash what is essentially Hell on earth. With that in mind, her being positioned next to Ash and his faithful sidekicks Pablo (Ray Santiago), and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) in what is clearly a “ready to fight” pose seems quite odd. Is this merely a strange layout choice by Starz, or will Ruby switch sides yet again? Perhaps she was simply possessed, and whatever evil entity that was controlling her has somehow been driven away? Raimi and company have some explaining to do on that front.
Plot related questions aside, with the entire cast and creative team set to return, fans have no reason to expect anything less than a groovy good time from Ash vs Evil Dead season 2. Hopefully this latest batch of episodes is good enough to once again make viewers hail to the king, baby.
Ash vs Evil Dead season 2 premieres in fall 2016.
