In Fall 2015, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) returns to do battle with deadites in the new Starz series – Ash vs Evil Dead. The show reunites Campbell with Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi and will pick up events almost 30 years after Army of Darkness, where we find an Ash who has withdrawn from society, avoiding all responsibility – both supernatural and not.
Ash vs. Evil Dead began filming in New Zealand a few months back and the start of production was signaled by a set image of Campbell and Raimi reunited with Evil Dead producer Rob Tapert (who will also produce Ash vs.) and the franchise’s iconic 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88. Joining them as showunner is Craig DiGregorio (Reaper) and rounding out the cast are Jill Marie Jones (Sleepy Hollow), Ray Santiago (Touch), Dana DeLorenzo (A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas), Mimi Rogers (Mad Men), and last but certainly not least, Lucy Lawless.
Starz will bring the comedy-horror series to San Diego Comic-Con 2015 next week, and ahead of the annual nerdpalooza the network has shared a short teaser and a new poster. Continuing with the promotional push, EW today debuted the first image of Campbell back in action as Ash – and it’s, of course, groovy. Take a look, below:
Flanking Ash are Santiago and Deloranzo as his Value Stop co-workers, Pablo and Kelly. (Yes, even after all these years, Ash is still a stock boy.) And with a younger cast comes a somewhat different role for Campbell:
“It’s The Searchers with carnage and mayhem. I’m relegated a little bit into the John Wayne mode these days with my team—the young, virile, evil fighters who will pair up with Ash and take on this nemesis: this never ending, ever evolving nemesis.”
Not that Ash doesn’t have some fight left in him. Armed (literally) with a chainsaw and his boomstick, Raimi says Ash is “still a really good monster fighter. So, he’s also going to be kicking some deadite buttocks.” But Raimi also implies it’s Ash’s fault (again!) that there’s a new threat to humanity at all, calling him “the only one stupid enough to really tamper with those spirits, and he does.”
As for what Ash has been doing all these years, Campell tells EW:
“Not much! He was perfectly happy doing basically nothing: telling lies about how he lost his hand in bars late at night. That was basically his MO. So, he’s not really the guy who should be dealing with this right now. But…he is. He’s our guy!”
That he is, and there’s really isn’t anyone we’d rather see leading the charge against the minions of evil. What do you think of this first image from Ash vs. Evil Dead? Are you excited for this next chapter in the Evil Dead saga? Tell us what you think in the comments below!
