Supernatural will finally crossover with the Arrowverse in an upcoming Legends of Tomorrow episode. The two universes have a fair amount in common, well beyond the fact that they both air on the CW, and fans have plotted up possible scenarios in which the two worlds might collide. One such example occurred in October 2018 when speculation ramped up that Supernatural star Jensen Ackles might show up as Batman in the Arrowverse, as the rumors became frequent enough that Stephen Amell had to eventually set the record straight. The actors themselves have expressed interest in their characters meeting, with Amell speaking out in favor of the idea on more than one occasion.

There are reasons why a crossover between Supernatural and the Arrowverse would work. Other than delightful opportunities for fan service, it would present a wealth of potentially intriguing storylines. Perhaps the most pressing justification to merge the two popular franchises is that Supernatural‘s ending. Returning for its final batch of episodes on March 16, the long-running drama will conclude with Sam and Dean. Despite attempts at a spinoff, none have landed. This is in stark contrast with Arrow. The comic book adaptation has finished its run, while also leaving behind several successful spin-offs which amount to a TV universe. Clearly, given that other Supernatural spinoffs have failed to launch, the solution is to fold the monster-hunting saga into the Arrowverse. That’s what will happen in an upcoming Legends of Tomorrow episode. Sort of.

Legends of Tomorrow‘s co-showrunner Phil Klemmer elaborated on the crossover, as part of an interview with EW. Set to air on March 24, and titled “Zari, Not Zari”, the episode includes a moment where Constantine, Charlie, and Sara are rifling through the trunk of a 1967 Chevrolet Impala. As indicated by the spray-painted demon trap, the Impala is supposed to be the one that the Winchester brothers use to drive around on Supernatural. The episode will also feature Sara holding a sign which indicates an episode of Supernatural is being filmed.

Klemmer explained that it’s not actually the car used on the set of Supernatural but a replica created by a dedicated fan. The Impala factors into the plot of “Zari, Not Zari,” which will see Constantine, Charlie, and Sara heading to British Columbia in search of the Loom of Fate. The episode will feature other Easter eggs, including the famous Supernatural musical score for those who listen closely. Klemmer added that, unfortunately, Sam and Dean won’t appear in the meta crossover.

The setup, which is made easier by the fact that both series shoot in British Columbia, is likely not how fans imagined the Winchesters encountering famous DC characters. But it’s a clever plot for Legends of Tomorrow, which has often enjoyed bringing real life into its inventive narratives. Perhaps in the future, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki will cameo in one of the Arrowverse shows. They already portrayed a fictional version of themselves in a classic installment of Supernatural.
