David Ramsey is officially returning to the Arrowverse both behind the camera and in front of it - and he'll play a mysterious character in addition to Diggle. Save for Stephen Amell, no actor has been a part of the Arrowverse for quite as long as Ramsey has. Ramsey first starred alongside Amell in Arrow as John Diggle, Oliver Queen's bodyguard who later becomes his closest friend and confidant. Ramsey remained a series regular throughout all of Arrow's eight-season run and even played a pivotal part in the series finale, which aired earlier this year.

Arrow's finale saw Diggle packing up to move to Metropolis with his family, though his final scene appeared to indicate there's something bigger on the horizon. When a meteor crashed down nearby, Diggle discovered a strange box that, when opened, emitted a bright green light. Fans were immediately filled with excitement at the possibility of Diggle becoming the Arrowverse's Green Lantern. However, in the months since Arrow's completion, Diggle has yet to step into the role of the iconic hero, even though he appeared in an episode of The Flash after discovering the box.

Now Diggle has another shot at becoming Green Lantern. Per Deadline, Ramsey is set to return to the Arrowverse in its upcoming 2021 season. Ramsey will direct five episodes for the shared universe, including episodes of Superman & Lois and Supergirl. Additionally, Ramsey will play Diggle in five episodes across Superman & Lois, Supergirl, The Flash, and Batwoman. The most intriguing tease of all, however, is the fact that he will play a mystery character on an episode of Legends of Tomorrow. Ramsey said in a statement:

“I remain in awe of the imprint these shows have had on television and I’ve been blessed for the better part of a decade to be a part of them both in front of and behind the camera. To say I’m excited beyond belief to return to the Berlantiverse would be an understatement. I can’t wait to continue telling these stories.”

Arrow Fadeout John Diggle finds Green Lantern Ring

At first glance, it certainly sounds like Diggle will finally become Green Lantern in his next batch of episodes. It wouldn't make sense for the Arrow finale to hint at that future by having Diggle find the green box if that wasn't where the story was going to go. With the passage of time from the Arrow finale to whenever his next appearance will be, there's a chance he's already become Green Lantern, meaning fans could see him as more of a fully-realized hero. However, for the time being, it's important to remember this is just speculation.

Regardless of his Green Lantern status, Diggle and Ramsey's continued presence within the Arrowverse means the franchise can hold onto its flagship show, even now that it's done. With Oliver dead and the CW not ordering Green Lantern and the Canaries to series (yet), Diggle is the strongest tie there is to Arrow. In keeping him around, the Arrowverse still has a hold on its roots, which will likely resonate with the fans who have watched since the beginning. Stay tuned for further updates about Ramsey's big Arrowverse return.
