[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Arrow ahead.]
Things have seriously changed for Oliver (Stephen Amell) in season 5 of Arrow. Operating with only the two-person team of himself and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) has been tough tactically as well as emotionally. The vigilante hero has been forced to accept that he’s going to have to get things done without sister Speedy (Willa Holland) and best friend Diggle (David Ramsey).
The second episode of the series will show the Green Arrow whipping some new recruits into shape for the fight against evil in Star City. This includes Wild Dog (Rick Gonzalez), Curtis Holt/Mr. Terrific (Echo Kellum), and Evelyn Sharp/Artemis (Madison McLaughlin). Oliver and Wild Dog got off to a rocky start in episode 1, with the Green Arrow forcibly removing him from a dangerous bomb and shooting him with an arrow to scare him off vigilantism.
This season also includes the ambitious three-hour-crossover event with Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and new CW recruit, Supergirl. In an interview with Comic Book, actor Gonzalez confirmed his character’s involvement in the blockbuster team-up.
“What I can say is that Wild Dog will be in the crossover, and he has a huge dislike for metahumans. So we’ll definitely see him not exactly rub well with The Flash and Supergirl and that’s just another glimpse into his psyche and his ideas and thinking about the world and the idea that there are people out there who have these sort of powers and who they are. Instead of saying ‘Wow, these people can do these things,’ he says, ‘no, I don’t like you because this is what you bring to the table. This is what you represent to me.'”
In the comics, Wild Dog has a tragic backstory, beginning with the forfeit of a football scholarship due to injury, continuing with the loss of friends to a terrorist bomb in his tour with the Marines, and ending with the murder of his girlfriend in a mob hit. Being confronted by people with a really unfair advantage in life would understandably trigger his anger issues, and Gonzalez confirms that Green Arrow’s aggressive leadership won’t help with his issues with authority, either.
Though Supergirl still remains on her own alternate Earth, she’ll be flying in to join her fellow DC heroes against a powerful new threat. Executive producer Greg Berlanti recently revealed that the crossover will be modeled after the comic book storyline Invasion! from the 1980s, and the heroes will be facing off against the alien race known as the Dominators. As much as Wild Dog distrusts metahumans, he’s going to have to admit they’ll come in handy against an alien invasion.
Supergirl season 2 airs Mondays at 8pm on The CW, The Flash season 3 airs Tuesdays in the same timeslot, Arrow season 5 on Wednesdays, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 premieres on Thursday October 13.
