Ever since Oliver Queen returned to Starling City after a lengthy, unplanned island vacation and decided to take up the art of unauthorized crime-fighting, all manner of heroes and villains have been flooding into the metropolis. The latest addition to Arrow season 2′s roster is Nyssa al Ghul, who will be played by Spartacus star Katrina Law and will make her first appearance in episode 13, ‘Heir to the Demon’.

In bringing to life the characters of the DC universe, Arrow has dipped into the pool of Spartacus talent more than once, with Manu Bennett playing Slade Wilson AKA Deathstroke and Cynthia Addai-Robinson having guest-starred as Amanda Waller. According to executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, this was one of the main reasons why Law wasn’t cast as Shado, the other role she auditioned for.

“It actually came down to Katrina and Celina [Jade] and honestly, part of it was just that because we knew she’d have scenes with Slade, and it just felt like a ‘Spartacus’ overkill.”

That doesn’t necessarily mean that Nyssa will never cross paths with Slade, but her main storyline in Arrow revolves around her alliance with the League of Shadows and her attempts to bring Sara Lance AKA Black Canary back into the fold. Somewhat predictably, Sara isn’t willing to just cooperate and so Nyssa kidnaps someone close to her (we’re guessing it’s probably Sin) as a means of persuasion.

Even viewers who haven’t read the comics will probably already be familiar with the al Ghul family, thanks to Ra’s al Ghul and Talia al Ghul both making an appearance in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. In the above images, Nyssa is shown carrying a quiver of arrows – possibly because she’s heard about the Arrow and wants to fight fire with fire – but in terms of personality Kreisberg says she bears a distinct resemblance to her sister.

“Our Nyssa certainly has shades of Talia… [Law is] somebody that we’ve been a fan of. When this part came up, we saw a lot of people for it, but she certainly is exotic and beautiful and smart and our stunt guys are over the moon, because she can do a lot of her own stunts.”

Kreisberg also describes Nyssa as “the next wave of the League of Assassins that comes to Starling City” and hints that “she has some interesting secrets.” In that case she should fit right in with the vigilante and criminal underworld of Starling City, where everyone has a secret and no one is quite what they seem.

Arrow continues next Wednesday with ‘Tremors’ @8pm on The CW. ‘Heir to the Demon’ will air on February 5th.

  1. Katrina Law was great on the episode of Chuck where she played a fairly lethal, torturous interrogator. I like the costume here and how the veil provides a hint of mystery without (hopefully) muffling her voice. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out. Interesting that she was up for the role of Shado. I thought Celina was one of the better cast, better performing actresses we’ve seen in the series to date.

  2. Looks great, can’t wait. My only complaint is that I may have to wait until March to see her episode.

    • not if you really want to see it, but thats another story

doesn’t the future mean instant gratification

  3. man im loving how arrow is slowly turning into spartacus =D cant wait to see her debut on arrow

    • That would be cool, more nudity, sex and slow motion takes !!

      • I really can’t understand what’s with the obsession with nudity and sex. Arrow is a bulletproof that you don’t need either of the two to have a great show that can entertain everyone.

      • Yea!!!!!!

The CW is gonna start throwing nudity and sex around for sure!

  4. So…when is Liam McEntyre showing up?

    • I think he might make a good Jason Todd for an episode or story arc. His fighting skills are god enough.

  5. Liking this show. Luvin’ me some Arrow adventures. Yes, indeed, I do.

  6. Geez this series cant get any better. Tonights episode was awesome!

    • Yeah tonights episode defintely was and the promo for next week got me so pumped. She was so BAD-A$$ in it

  7. I just hope The Wall slap those claws out of his hands. Lol

  8. Any actress that is athletic and can do her on stunts gets a plus in my book!

Love this show. Best comic book related TV show at the moment!

    • When it first started I thought it was just okay, and that Smallville was worlds better. But as it goes on I really think it could top Smallville. And then when The Flash series debuts in the fall, that will most certainly top this.

  9. While I’m happy to see Nyssa Al Ghul get some screen time Finally, considering that DC comics itself practically wrote her out of existance. I was kind of hoping to see the Amazing Talia Al Ghul coming in, I guess stupid ass NOLAN and Morrison blasted her back decades with thier pitiful tellings of her. Anyway it’s good to see Nyssa the real insane sister of Talia on the small screen, maybe just maybe this will be a better start of the Age of Al Ghul… That family needs to be seen more than what they are being seen anyway!

  10. No Arrow review today?

Not really digging the Roy storyline.

  11. The Lance sisters will and Huntress will become Birds of Prey. Calling it now.
