‘Glee’ Star Grant Gustin to Play The Flash in ‘Arrow’ Season 2

Grant Gustin to play Barry Allen AKA The Flash in Arrow season 2 Glee Star Grant Gustin to Play The Flash in Arrow Season 2

The start of Arrow season 2, highly anticipated after the success of the show’s first season, is mere weeks away and with an established trend of bringing other DC characters on for guest roles there have been a lot of questions raised about who Oliver Queen might be teaming up with – or fighting – next. One thing we know for sure is that Barry Allen, AKA the Flash, will be speeding into the screen for several episodes of Arrow’s second season.

News on the Flash’s casting heated up earlier this week when we heard that the shortlist of actors had been whittled down to three names, two of which (James Mackay and Matt Barr) were known but with one name remaining a mystery. Perhaps predictably, it’s the mystery actor who’s been handed the role, and if you’re a fan of teen dramas then he’ll already be familiar.

THR reports that Grant Gustin has been cast in the role of Barry Allen, who will appear in a guest star role on season 2 of Arrow and may later star in his own TV show. The Flash is just one of many classic DC characters who will be coming to Arrow this fall, including new villain Isabel Rochev (Summer Glau) and Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Spartacus) as Amanda Waller.

Gustin is best known for his guest role on jukebox musical drama Glee, in which he played Sebastian Smythe, the smarmy and underhanded captain of rival show choir the Dalton Academy Warblers. His tactics for beating the New Directions included driving a wedge between cosy couple Blaine and Kurt, nearly blinding Blaine with a rock salt-spiked slushie attack and trying to blackmail Rachel with a photoshopped naked picture of Finn. Show choir is a pretty serious business.

In addition to appearing on Glee, Gustin also had a guest role on 90210, but other than that he’s pretty much a newcomer. He has quite a lot of charisma, though, and it will definitely be interesting to see what he can do when placed in a superhero’s shoes. Gustin will appear in episodes 8, 9 and 20 of Arrow‘s second season, and his final episode will also serve as a potential back door pilot for a spin-off Flash show. When asked by THR about the role, Gustin indicated that he’s already got a lot of his research in hand:

“I’m unbelievably excited. I’ve been a lifelong fan of DC Comics, so I can’t be more honored and can’t wait to get started.”

Unlike Oliver’s gadget-based vigilantism, Barry Allen has a pretty clear-cut superpower and Arrow‘s producers have said that he is going to be just as extraordinary in the show as he is in the comics. Allen will be introduced as an ordinary forensic scientist and will presumably get his powers by the end of season 3, though whether they’ve come from an impromptu chemical shower or whether there’ll be another explanation remains to be seen.

It’s hard to be sure with such a relatively unknown entity, but tell us in the comments if you think Gustin is a good casting choice for Barry Allen, and whether or not you’d be onboard with a Flash spin-off series.

  1. hmmm his from glee a show that sucks and will never ever watch, i will wait and see what his like as barry allen before judging him

    • Same here. I can’t stand Glee. But like you, I will hold my tongue until I see how he does in his first episode.

      • vladiator, what if he gives an awesome performance, but it gets lost in translation and you think it sucks? Since English is obviously your second (or third… or fourth) language. :)

  2. From Glee? No, no, go back, do it again. I’m sorry, I just hate that show. It’s High School Musical: The TV Series.

  3. He’s kind of young…I would have preferred Matt Barr. He would have been a great Barry Allen. Guess we’ll have to wait and see how he does.

    • agreed. he doesnt scream barry allen and compared to amell he seems idk out of place as flash

  4. …. speechless.

  5. sigh, I can tell everyone is only going to focus on the fact he was on Glee and declare doom. Let’s give the kid a chance. I’m not sold yet on a Flash TV show, but if he makes a good Barry Allen I could be persuaded.

  6. Cue the overreaction! Seriously can people actually wait and see a product before critiquing it or is the world just full of hysterical idiots everywhere?

  7. Cue the overreaction!

    • +1

    • +a million

  8. arrow the show awesome, anyone from glee period, not so awesome.

  9. Nope. I’m done with Arrow now. How is a 23 year old actor gonna play a forensic scientist? He’d barely be out of college. Arrow was kinda cool but half the characters were made up for the show and the other half aren’t even recognizable. The CW just isn’t the place to bring these characters to life.

    • This^

    • It’s called acting and it happens all the time. You don’t know the context of the stage of his life yet.
Luckily there’s this thing called aging which will also help. Drama queens everywhere around here!

      • I do know the context of the stage of his life. The CW says he’ll be starting work as a crime scene investigator. And acting doesn’t change age. He plays a high school kid on Glee. I wasn’t a huge Arrow fan to begin with anyway. It’s kinda cool, not the best acting, and Laurel’s character pisses me off every time she’s on screen. I really think the CW needs to stay away from adapting superheroes. I think having these characters on TV and then a separate version in the theaters will detract from them.

    • One I wouldn’t give up on arrow on this one casting just yet. In the bio from thr/tvguide looks like this barry is a low level early in csi career police officer. I too wasn’t. Expecting this move. And thought they would have gone with matt barr. Who is closer to amell in age and would have probably been simular age to ollie. And been a full masters/phd ceftified scieniest. But I am still going to give the kid a shot.

    • It’s isn’t a bad place but it isn’t a great one either. Characters like Green Arrow and Flash can do much better on other networks. It’s just the audience the CW are targeting, teenagers lol.

  10. glee cast

    rip justice league

    • How will it ruin Justice League? I don’t think either Arrow or the upcoming Flash show will even be connected to the film franchise.

    • Dude,

This Arrow/Flash TELEVISION show has little to no relationship to the ultimate CINEMATIC JUSTICE LEAGUE franchise…..

    • Ya this is probably not going to ruin jl movie. I still think we are at least 3 to 5 yrs from it happening. And likely if flash show happens it couldd be over before the film even happens. And secondly unlike marvel doing shield set in movieverse. I doubt arrow and flash if it goes will be set within the newly started film verse.

      • Why have 2 different versions?

        • Because the show is on the CW lol. A network where every TV show is directed at the teenage audience, resulting in some intensely cheesy episodes. Something that simply wouldn’t fit anywhere in films like Man of Steel. I’d also want the film franchise to have complete freedom and not be bogged down by having to take into account what happens in a TV show.

  11. Eh, I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt. I’m personally not gonna to cast any judgement until I see him in action. And if it helps anything, he is a longtime fan of DC.

  12. he looks damn young…more of a peter parker

    • +1 Just look at his long scrawny neck, he could be Garfield’s brother.

  13. Gonna give him a chance, wasn’t really excited about the Flash TV either way (would be for a movie though). Haven’t seen Glee or 90210 so I can’t judge his acting. Guess it’s the waiting game! He’s pretty young though, figured they’d go with someone a bit older, around Amell’s age at least.

  14. onerios i am guessing you have never heard of the word genius before he could a genius scientist it is very possible this Barry Allen left and entered higher education earlier than most Now think people how spoilt are we three comic TV show`s (The walking dead from AMC, Agents of shield from ABC MARVEL , and Arrow and flash from Warner ) A plethora of comic book movies from Sony,Marvel,Fox and Warner these are good times people just enjoy. I peeved at Ben Affleck casting who cares it is not like there is a online petition to get him out of the role

  15. I think those at CW are confusing Barry Allen with Wally West…all these actors scream Wally West and not an older mature individual who would fit the bill as a police forensic scientist…they need to think more like a Dexter casting than a High School Musical…

    • Wally West was the first thing I thought when I saw the Glee-flea’s pic. I do not want Wally West, I want Barry Allen. Everyone (practically) wants BA, and they said BA would be the character used. I hope they don’t go back on that. Are they figuring he will stay young enough that he won’t get old after one movie? Or did they pick him because he was in Glee (don’t know). Looks-wise (altho BA is blond), the Australian actor looked the most mature for such an important part (not the Hatfields/McCoys actor. The other one that was said to be in the front running. Maybe if he had an Aussie accent, it knocked him out of the running??).

      • Liam McIntyre, I think, was the Aussie the web-sites were mentioning the other day as being in the running.

        • I saw several sites showing as Liam McIntyre was in the running but then dropped out because of “scheduling conflict”. Could the rumors of the guy being in the running for a role in Star Wars be true? That would be interesting

  16. Man I was hoping it wouldn’t be grant. Nothing against him. Don’t know his work. And I felt he was to young. I was so rooting for matt barr. Though I wish grant best of luck and hope he does well.

  17. Talk about backlash. Here’s my two cents. To say Grant Gustin is from Glee is a bit of an overstatement. He was in seven episodes, and has managed to portray a fairly complex character. He did well with the role. To dismiss an actor because of a television show they appeared on is ignorant. He didn’t have any creative input in the show, he was just an actor starting out trying to find work.

Secondly, Arrow is a good show. I think most of the cast members have done well with their roles. If the casting folks at CW are to be trusted then I’m not worried about Gustin’s casting. They’re not just pulling names out of a hat, there’s a reason they think this will work. Maybe it’s a young Flash?

  18. I was hoping it’d be Matt Barr but alas, it’s not.
Saw him on Glee, but it wasn’t a great way to see how good an actor he is, here’s to hoping they didn’t screw up the casting and I just hope they do a good dye-job on his hair. Also, ” Glee ‘star’ ” star’s a strong word :P

  19. Just because we don’t like Glee as a people doesn’t make it a bad show it has a huge fan base and actually must be pretty good if its still on. I’ve never seen this kid act but hopefully he’s good because I love The Flash.

  20. Hopefully he beefs up too I want my heroes in tip top shape they are supposed to be what people strive to be like well at least some aspects

  21. Nope. NOPE. Won’t watch this now! I don’t like the way he looks. He doesn’t look anything like the Barry Allen that was drawn 50 years ago on a piece of paper! This ruins everything for a Justice League movie (Which I won’t see by the way)!!!!!!!!! I’M SO ANGRY!!!! I have little to no information on why this person was cast as The Flash, but they could’ve gotten somebody better. They should’ve cast anyone but this person. I’m 100% unfamiliar with his work, but I know he won’t be a good Flash. I’M SO ANGRY THEY DID THIS THING THAT I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER. BEN AFFLECK IS A TERRIBLE BATMAN, AND THIS KID IS A TERRIBLE FLASH EVEN THOUGH I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO KNOWLEDGE TO BASE THIS STATEMENT OFF OF. THE JUSTICE LEAGUE MOVIE THEY HAVEN’T EVEN CONFIRMED YET IS RUINED, EVEN THOUGH THERE IS ALMOST NO PRODUCTION ON IT.

For the layman, that, right up there, is sarcasm. How I really feel you ask? Meh, we’ll see. I’m still gonna watch it.

    • This ^ makes me :)

      • I had to think for a sec after you said me aha

      • Thank goodness. I was hoping it wouldn’t fly miles over people’s heads and garner all kinds of otherworldly hate and negative, yet creative, responses.

    • If I had control, this dude would be Flash’s son, even though he doesn’t have one. What a wimp.

      • Warped thought of the moment:
Could you see if Flash had a bratty little son who misbehaved so much, he needed a spanking? The Flash would pummel his bum-cheeks so fast at super-speed that it would look like he was playing the Tom-Toms or Bongos! Give him a couple drum-stix, and he’d look like Buddy Rich!

    • So brilliant! I was shocked by his casting too, but he was chosen out of hundreds that auditioned, he has obviously got “it”. We must trust in WB, DC, Berlanti, Kreisberg, and Johns.

  22. Fingers crossed.

  23. I would have prefered Matt Barr. On the other hand, I don’t care enough about this show to get really upset over this.

  24. Never watched Glee as I am not a fan of that type of show or music, but I am not going to judge the guy because he took a job to get his career started. I will reserve judgement until I see him, but I have loved everything about Arrow so far, so I think the folks doing the casting over there know more about this guy than a bunch of internet fanboys!!

  25. Justin beiber just posted a pic on Instagram with a script of batman vs superman with the caption “robin??”

    • God forbid.

      • Kill me now.

    • I just saw it he did instagram it. Hopefully its a cruel Friday the 13th Joke.

      • If anyone believes he will be robin then their idiotic.

    • Justa Beiver is so dumb that if he had another brain, it’d be lonely!

    • That can’t be real. When was the last time writers printed the emblem or logo of a movie on the script header. Aside from star wars they just write it in plain font.

      • He did film an episode of Funny or Die that day, so maybe prop script? I seriously doubt after the backlash over Affleck such a decision would be made.

  26. I thought they would cast someone who looked like a man. This dude is just a little boy.

    • He is 24.

  27. Now I’m desperately hoping that the DC cinematic universe will be in no way connected with the Arrow universe. Flash is my favorite comic book superhero, and I do not want to watch a JL film with this dude as Flash. That being said, he may pull out an amazing performance and turn my opinion, but I rather doubt it. I hate Glee with a passion.

  28. A little too young looking don’t ya think?

  29. Maybe its just me, but he is what I imagine Wally West would look like as Kid Flash
