[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Arrow season 4 ahead.]
The popular CW superhero series Arrow is headed towards its midseason finale. The new episode promo gives fans a peek inside the finale and all the action as the Green Arrow (alias of Oliver Queen) and his crew face off against Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) and his H.I.V.E..
The confrontation between Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and Damien Darhk is coming to a head when Darhk confronts and attacks him in public. Damien is out to teach Oliver a lesson and it looks like his friends may have to pay the ultimate price for crossing the evil-doer.
The ninth episode of Arrow‘s fourth season is going to air next week and its the last new episode fans will get before the series breaks for the holidays. The midseason finale is going to bring Oliver and crew back to Star City, following their annual crossover with The Flash television series. It appears that Damien’s patience with Oliver’s resistance has clearly worn thin, as evidence by the trailer for the episode (see above).
Darhk is going public with his H.I.V.E. Ghosts and displaying his extraordinary powers in public, as he confronts Oliver Queen inside of his mayoral campaign headquarters. Oliver has proven to be a thorn in Damien’s side and he’s just too high-profile of a character to exact revenge on directly, so Darhk is going after Oliver’s friends – including his girlfriend Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards).
The trend among shows has been to leave their midseason finale’s with major cliffhangers and they make a great time for a character death, or at least the tease of one. The teaser ends with Felicity stuck in an enclosure, clearing losing air, while Oliver looks on helplessly. This could be the death of Felicity Smoak, and that would certainly through the show in a new and darker direction, as Oliver deals with that loss. It could also be a simple diversion to drum up some drama.
Once the friend of Ra’s Al Ghul and proverbial “Heir to the Demon”, the immortal Arrow version of Damien Darhk was a member of the League of Assassins, but after he was passed over for the throne of the Demon, he stole part of the Lazarus pit and defected, creating his own evil splinter organization called H.I.V.E.. Damien and his heavily armed and subservient H.I.V.E. soldiers have a plan to destroy Star City. The Green Arrow and his crew had to face Ra’s Al Ghul and his League of Assassins last season, but Darhk may just end up being a far greater threat than the Demon’s Head.
Darhk first appeared in the pages of the Teen Titans themed comic book, Titans, back in 1999. The comic book version of Damien Darhk, while also menacing, wasn’t nearly as powerful and connected as the Arrow television series version. The connection with Ra’s, the Lazarus pit and League of Assassins and of course his superpowers. The comic book version does have a genius intellect and uses his brains and influence against the heroes of the DC Universe.
The Arrow midseason finale airs next Wednesday at 8/7 Central on the CW.
