DO NOT WATCH if you are not caught up on Season 3 of Arrow!
Arrow has arguably hit something of a slight slump in its third season (a common problem in network TV series). While shows like The Flash have proven that a more fantastical superhero TV series can be success, Arrow has had trouble keeping similar momentum behind its grittier and more grounded approach to super heroism – especially since Marvel’s Daredevil Netflix series has come along to show fans what truly gritty, grounded (and more concise) superhero TV can be.
Nonetheless, as season 3 concludes even the missteps are falling behind the anticipation to see what becomes of Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) as he slips further under Ra’s al Ghul’s influence to become the future head of The League of Assassins.
As detailed in the new preview for the season 3 penultimate episode, “This Is Your Sword”, we see Ra’s’ threat against Starling City (using Oliver as his means to that end) meet the resistance of “Team Arrow,” plus a few new friends who join the fight. As per the official synopsis:
“This Is Your Sword” – Oliver/Al Sah-him (Stephen Amell) finishes his training and is left with two final tasks to become the next Ra’s al Ghul. Ra’s (guest star Matt Nable) threatens Nyssa (guest star Katrina Law) and delivers some shocking news. Meanwhile, Malcolm (John Barrowman) makes a surprising offer to Team Arrow and Thea (Willa Holland) goes to see Roy (Colton Haynes). Wendey Stanzler directed the episode with story by Erik Oleson and teleplay by Ben Sokolowski & Brian Ford Sullivan.
One of those friends happen to be Tatsu (Rila Fukushima), former wife of Maseo (Karl Yune) and part of the Hong Kong couple seen in the season 3 flashbacks to Oliver’s time in Hong Kong. We’ve seen Maseo in action as Ra’s al Ghul’s right-hand in The League (saving Oliver several times), but have been waiting for Tatsu to suit up as the DC Comics hero, Katana.
Thanks to this trailer, we can now see the official Katana costume the show will use:
That costume looks pretty much like the one from the comic books, which fans can debate as a good/bad thing.
In the source material, Tatsu picked Maseo as a husband over his brother Takeo. After having children (twins in the books, as opposed to one son on the show), things came to a head one day when Tatsu and Maseo were forced to duel for their lives against Takeo, who had become a Yakuza enforcer. In the end, Tatsu lost Maseo and her children, vowing to become the samurai vigilante Katana. In the show it’s been implied that Tatsu and Maseo already lost their son (sending Maseo into League service), so Katana’s official debut as a vigilante may have a bigger impact on Arrow‘s future.
Gotham airs on Mondays @ 8pm on Fox; The Flash airs Tuesdays @ 8pm on The CW; Arrow airs Wednesdays @8pm on The CW; Supergirl is expected to air in the Fall 2015 pilot season; Titans is currently still in development.
