[SPOILERS ahead for anyone not caught up on Arrow.]

The popularity of The CW’s Arrow – although not the first superhero television show to find success – is why superheroes are quickly become the dominate genre on television. Currently, almost every network is working hard to get a superhero of their own on the air: CBS’ Supergirl, TNT’s Titans, Syfy’s Kryptonjust to name a few. And sure, it’s the heroes that audiences come to see, but often it’s the villains that keep them tuning in.

So far, Arrow has managed to have an interesting and varied line-up of villains, from season one’s Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) and China White (Kelly Hu) to last season’s Brother Blood (Kevin Alejandro) and Slade Wilson (Manu Bennet). Thus far in season three, Oliver and co. have been at the mercy of one of DC’s most imposing villains: Ra’s al Ghul (Matt Nable). The Demon will surely be a tough act to follow, but many said the very same of Slade Wilson (a.k.a. Deathstroke), and his character hasn’t been entirely sidelined since being defeated by the Arrow in season 3.

It will likely be the same with Ra’s al Ghul, as the infamously immortal villain will probably be defeated in some manner before the season is out (though it should by no means be the last we see of him). That still leaves an opening for a new villain to terrorize Team Arrow next season – and according to TV Line‘s Michael Ausiello, the next big bad will be introduced in Arrow‘s season 3 finale.

Here’s the full scoop:

The show’s Season 3 finale will introduce a major, formidable, fierce new foe for Oliver, and his reign of terror will continue well into Season 4. The mysterious character is being referred to internally as “Damian Dark,” which got Matt Mitovich and I (but mostly MM) pulling up and skimming the Wiki page of one Damian Wayne. Get it? Damian Wayne. Son of the Dark Knight. They’d probably have to tweak the Bruce Wayne connection, but it’s a plausible theory, no?

Now, before the more comic book literate among us throw a fit, Ausiello soon updated this report with the following:

Readers better-schooled than Matt Mitovich and I (but mostly MM) notes that Damien Darhk is a H.I.V.E. operative per DC lore, and thus is more likely to be introduced.

The name-dropping of Batman’s son may have perked more than a few ears, but for those familiar with the character it’s obvious this is not the Damian they’re introducing on Arrow. Trying to manipulate his origin to fit within the canon of the series would simply be too hard, even if the League of Assassins exists and therefore so does (potentially) Damian’s mother, Talia.

As Ausiello later corrected, there is a DC Comics character already named Damian Dark–in this case, Darhk. A former gangster and underworld thug, Damian would later work for the criminal organization H.I.V.E. and at times battle the Teen Titans.

When it comes to his appearance on Arrow, however, expect the series to create their own spin on the character. H.I.V.E. has already been introduced, though very briefly, in the season 2 episode, “Keep Your Enemies Closer“, as the organization that hired Deadshot to assassinate Diggle’s brother.

Clearly, if they’re looking to bring Damian in the mix, his role will undoubtedly be as some high-level H.I.V.E. operative, perhaps even the de facto leader of the organization that trains mercenaries and assassins for hire. And judging by the earlier connection with Deadshot, it’s even more likely we’ll learn the reason behind the hit on Diggle’s brother, too.

What do think Damian Darhk’s role will be on Arrow? Will he be just another H.I.V.E. hired gun or the one calling the shots? Sound off in the comments below!

Arrow airs Wednesday nights on The CW @8/7c.
