[This post contains SPOILERS for this week’s Arrow.]
Oliver Queen has been having a rough few weeks on Arrow. His journey has always been one of darkness and tragedy, but the recent scheming of Prometheus has led to Oliver’s lowest point so far. Of course, his misery has been the audience’s gain. After a rocky couple of years, The CW’s flagship superhero show has been firing on all cylinders in season 5. And the past few episodes have all been leading up to one big confrontation.
The season has gone from Mayor Queen declaring the Green Arrow as public enemy number one to Prometheus toying with the hero all last week to last night’s brutal episode and culmination of much of the show up to this point. Possibly one of the show’s darkest entries yet, ‘Kapiushon’ pushed Oliver to the breaking point by dovetailing his past embrace of the Hood identity with his present abandonment of the Green Arrow one. Of course, just because Oliver is casting aside his quiver doesn’t mean he’s letting Prometheus off lightly. There’s no telling what the future holds for Oliver or the show, but next week it’s going to be all out war in Star City.
The CW has released the promo for next week’s ‘Disbanded.’ In it, Team Arrow goes to battle with Adrian Chase and what looks to be his allies. What exactly they have planned is unclear, but it looks to involve a lot of collateral damage. Some of that could even be the friendship of Oliver and Diggle, judging by the scene toward the end. It also looks like Anatoly will be jumping from the flashbacks to the present in an effort to help his former Bratva brother. It’s hard to imagine the season dialing things up any more from here, but there’s still a few episode left before the finale.
Whether Prometheus is part of the final episodes or not, fans will have to wait and see. It has already been reported that the end of the season will be both personal and psychological, so the show could see any number of past enemies return. Kovar is still alive, and there is a slight chance Deathstroke will be back. If that’s the case, season 5 could act as a sort of button on the series as a whole so far, setting up a new status quo for the fall.
And as one hero potentially hangs up their metaphorical cape, another gains their own. Today brought some concept art for Legends of Tomorrow next week, where ‘Doomworld‘ will see things turned upside down. In the new reality, Felictiy Smoak will finally become a superhero, with a cool costume and all. While it’s sadly just a one-off, that could change at some point in the future. After all, Star City is going to need some protectors if Oliver is truly finished. Then again, we have a feeling he’ll be back in green before too long.
Arrow continues next Wednesday with ‘Disbanded’ @ 8pm on The CW.
