After being abruptly cancelled after three seasons on the air on Fox way back in 2006, the critically acclaimed, cult-hit situation comedy Arrested Development rose from the ashes on Netflix for season 4 in 2013. Despite going on to earn further accolades upon its revival (including three Emmy nominations), series creator Mitch Hurwitz has been reticent to state when and where the show will finally return, despite claiming that season 5 is definitively in the works.
Following recent news that has Hurwitz working on an exclusive remix of the original fifteen episodes that comprise season 4, it would appear as though season 5 of Arrested Development is in fact on the way, though just where and in what format the new series will take is up in the air. On that note, the latest word has it that Netflix is willing to distribute the show once again when Hurwitz and the rest of the cast and crew are ready to shoot it.
According to EW, Hurwitz spoke to the show’s current status at the Television Critics Association press tour yesterday as being “very close” to delivering season 5 of Arrested Development on Netflix. Just when the show will return remains up to chance and the individual schedules of all the various cast members involved in the cult-hit sit-com. Speaking to the current status of the program, Hurwitz stated:
“We’re very close. It’s the thing I’m really desperate to do. We’ve got a lot of stories broken. We’re ready to go. I’m so appreciative of the fans wanting more, I’d hate to tease them with information until we know it’s going to happen… If it does happen, it looks like shooting would happen at the start of 2017.“
Given the fact that so many members of the cast are busy with other critically acclaimed TV shows at this point in time, it remains to be seen whether or not Hurwitz will be able to wrangle everyone together to get season 5 of Arrested Development done on time. Seeing as how Tony Hale (Veep), Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent), and Portia de Rossi (Scandal) are all quiet busy with their respectively well regarded projects, it could be a challenge to get another season of Hurwitz’s much beloved show off the ground. Regarding his own working schedule, Hale commented:
“It’s a lot of scheduling. A lot of people are doing different stuff and it’s nine people to get together. I really want to see where the story continues.“
It would be exciting to finally get to see another series order of Arrested Development on Netflix, but for now it still feels like the possibility of season 5 is as much of a pipe dream as the oft-talked about tie-in movie has been in the past. Hurwitz has promised a lot of content to fans in the past, but here’s to hoping that he can finally deliver again sometime in the near future.
