Arrested Development Season 4 Arrested Development Season 4 Begins Shooting in 4 Weeks

Arrested Development was canceled more than six years ago, so you could forgive people who didn’t quite believe that there would ever be a feature film or a follow-up television series (even though both were announced last year at The New Yorker film festival). Since then, we’ve learned that the new series will be 10 episodes long and air on Netflix all at once.

For those still dubious that the beloved property will ever make its highly-anticipated return, both Ron Howard and Jason Batemen tweeted photographic evidence that pre-production was underway, with Batemen announcing that filming would begin in four short weeks.

Check out the photos below, tweeted by Ron Howard and Jason Batemen, respectively (click to enlarge):

The first photo features Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz scratching his head in the writing room. The second features narrator/producer Ron Howard, star Jason Batemen, and Hurwitz in apparent glee – much the way that I appear, I imagine, every time I read or hear news regarding season 4 or the (hopefully) forthcoming feature film.

Along with the photo, Ron Howard tweeted:

“Arrested Development for Netflix. IT’S ALIVE.”

And, more interestingly, Jason Batemen tweeted:

“All systems are go. Filming for the new episodes starts in four weeks. Woo!”

So there you have it, people. All systems are a go. Filming for season 4 begins in four weeks. And, most importantly, woo.

Alas, not everyone is filled with glee at the prospect of a new Arrested Development series – even some die hard fans of the old show. There’s a common belief that a terrible sequel to an older property (or, indeed, a terrible follow-up series that airs six years after the previous one) can somehow retroactively besmirch the original experience.

Of course, everyone’s mileage may vary, but the Star Wars prequels never ruined The Empire Strikes Back for me. Same goes for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Live Free or Die Hard, Halloween 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, the remakes, The Thing prequel, Men in Black 2, Spider-Man 3, Superman 3 and 4, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, et cetera, ad infinitum.

It’s certainly possible that these new Arrested Development episodes could be terrible to the extreme, but that will never make the original series – for myself, anyway – any less brilliant or hilarious.

What do you think, Screen Ranters? Are you looking forward to the entirety of season 4 being released on Netflix at once? Let us know in the comments.

  1. can’t for new arrested development episodes!

    • can’t wait

  2. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Thank you Sweet Baby Kush god.

  3. Hey….I liked The Thing prequel….:3

    • We are in the minority, my friend

  4. I’m excited and have high hopes. I discovered the show from the discount bin at walmart and completely changed how I watch tv.

(And I like Halloween 3, Die Hard 4, and Batman Forever. Did you purposely leave out Halloween H2O (halloween7)?)

    • I ment Halloween 4 was good. 2, 5, and 7 were ok. 3 was complete garbage

      • I was about to say…You liked Halloween 3? haha

    • Yeah, I dig H20 as a solid Screami-ified Halloween sequel (with guest appearance by JGL).

And perhaps I was too hard on Halloween 4, which I enjoyed despite the fact that it was no where near the quality of the original.

  5. I’m absolutely thrilled that this will happen. I’ve watched the whole series 4 times now and I’m still finding things I missed.
IMO it’s the funniest series ever.

  6. Would be much happier if they were going to be availible in Canada!!! I hate these companies that are different entities in different countries.

  7. WOO! I literally opened up Spotify and put on Europe’s Final Countdown after I read this. I’ll leave the track on repeat until the episodes are released on Netflix.

  8. The idea that the new season will be anything less than amazing is ridiculous. If we were able to bring Vincent Van Gogh back to life, Zombie Vincent would still be able to create masterpieces, genius is genius. Every time I start to worry about the quality of a future show I just tell myself, “Oh Tobias you blowhard!”

    • I like your style.

  9. Always great to see an excellent show come back. We will see how well it does…

  10. I don’t think I would be any happier if I won the lottery and Scarlett Johannsson moved in next door!

  11. YES!

  12. The Final Countdown is playing in my mind!!!!

  13. Ron Howard — I wouldn’t mind kissing that man between the cheeks!

    • (So to speak.)

  14. Agree Ben. I’m a huge fan of Scrubs and loved the entire series run with the exception of season 9. I watched the entire season and it just wasn’t Scrubs even though they tried with what was left of the original cast. Noted it didn’t have a few years hiatus. It was just terrible to follow up with an almost entirely new cast and I don’t count season 9 as part the Scrubs continuity. Scrubs ran seasons 1-8 and that’s that. Season 9 didn’t take away from the previous 8 years. That being said Arrested Development HAS the original people back and I have faith it will pick right up where it left off. Can’t wait for the new episodes.

  15. I can’t wait for this!!!! I want my bluths – 2013 can’t come soon enough!!!

  16. how could anyone NOT ant AD back – C’MON!?

  17. Yay!!! So maybe there’s hope for Firefly :)

  18. Great news! – but why Netflix?

  19. YESSSSSSS! I am happy dancing like Snoopy! This is GREAT news! We are totally starting a marathon (again) right now!!
