‘Arrested Development’ Season 4 Premieres May 26th

It’s been a little more than a year since Netflix entered the original programming fray, and about that long since it was announced that they would bring Arrested Development back. Yet, despite the critical success of House of Cards and the buzz surrounding Hemlock Grove, it’s always felt like Netflix’s real born-on date as a “network” would be the day that Arrested returned… and we now know when that is, exactly.

Arrested Development season 4 will premiere at 12:01am on May 26th with all 15 episodes instantly available for streaming on Netflix. Creator Mitch Hurwitz and stars Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, Jeffrey Tambor, David Cross and Jessica Walter will return – though the full cast won’t all appear in every episode, a concession that made this whole thing possible with regards to scheduling.

So, why May 26th? Well, with the unofficial end of the network fall TV season, there will surely be less white noise and fewer distractions in place to keep viewers and potential subscribers busy – but the Emmy awards are also a consideration, according to THR:

A May launch date qualifies the series for Emmy consideration, and Netflix is expected to push it in the comedy series category.

Nothing trumpets the arrival of a new force in “television” like major awards success, and with the uncommon critical praise heaped upon Arrested Development during it’s initial 3 season run on FOX, Netflix may get rewarded for such a push, potentially topping this incredible resurrection story with the series’ second Best Comedy Emmy (they won in 2004, their debut season).

Sadly, though, they may only get one chance at such success, since Netflix CEO Reed Hastings previously indicated that he didn’t “anticipate” future seasons, though his comments were undercut by another Netflix source shortly thereafter.

Whether or not Arrested Development returns isn’t the issue right now, though. The countdown for more Arrested has begun and we’re only about 7 weeks away from more Gob, Buster, and the rest. And anyway, if it doesn’t work out, there’s always the possibility of a movie.

  1. Well needless to say I’m skipping work May 26th then… 😀 and skipping sleep that night to binge watch all the episodes.

  2. I just blue myself.

  3. The currently re-watching the series (5th or 6th time I’ve done so) in anticipation for the new season. Now that we know the date the new episodes will be available I can time it so I watch the last episode of season 3 and then immediately start the new season.
I’m so excited! The Bluth’s are back!!!

  4. I really hope the cast can rekindle the magic. Did somebody say magic?

I can’t wait! Thank you Netflix!!!

  5. Any word on whether or not the Canadian Netflix is going to get it at the same time?

We have a much smaller selection overall, and, while we do get some new releases, there is usually a delay, and I (and many other Canadians, I hope) have been waiting just as excitedly as those of you Stateside.

  6. i just blue myself…

    • I see what you did there

  7. Do you mean the show premiers on may 26th everywhere or only for American Netflix users?

    • Just North America.

      • I’d like it if for once the American TV companies would recognize the non-american countries watching their shows so we don’t have to go through this whole “So it’s out next week, nope it’s only out next week for the US” it’s annoying waiting half a year in some cases only to be told I was waiting for a US release date.

Do Netflix at least have a separate release date planned for the other countries? Or are we TBC like every other time?

  8. I might have to bust out the cornballer and throw a party!

  10. To quote the movie Fanboys “Hey guys… What if it sucks?”

    • To quote Kitty Sanchez, “say goodbye to these.”

      • I’m legitimately concerned, I love Arrested Development and all, but it’s possible they don’t hit it out of the park like they did with the original run. I’m hopeful, but I’m a little worried.

  11. Bring back Franklin! The world’s greatest puppet.
