The Legend of Conan Arnold Schwarzenegger Schwarzenegger Returning for Legend of Conan; Looks Tough in First Ten Image

About a year from now, we’ll have a pretty good idea of whether or not the long-heralded return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to the silver screen was actually a good idea. But for now, fans are riding high on a wave of nostalgia at the thought of one of yesteryear’s greatest action stars making a comeback.

Today brings two news items on the “Ahnuld” front: the actor (and former Governor) will be reclaiming the mantle of Conan the Barbarian, and he also looks plenty badass as a dirty DEA agent in End of Watch writer/director David Ayer’s Ten.

Deadline reported that Universal Pictures is choosing to (once again) reboot the Conan franchise, after the 2011 reboot starring Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa sputtered to a $48 million worldwide box office take on a $90 million budget. The new approach for this particular mulligan? Bring back the star who made the original film a cult-hit. Enter Schwarzenegger.

The new film will be titled The Legend of Conan, and the story for it was crafted by Chris Morgan (Fast and the Furious 3 – 647 Ronin) who might also write the screenplay. Deadline notes that Morgan could potentially be busy with Fast and the Furious 7 during the production of Legend of Conan (which is circling a 2014 release date); should that be the case, Morgan would still be heavily involved in producing the film, alongside Fredrik Malmberg of Paradox Entertainment (which holds the Conan rights).

Regarding what the film would actually BE about, Malmberg offered some insight:

“The original ended with Arnold on the throne as a seasoned warrior, and this is the take of the film we will make… It’s that Nordic Viking mythic guy who has played the role of king, warrior, soldier and mercenary, and who has bedded more women than anyone, nearing the last cycle of his life. He knows he’ll be going to Valhalla, and wants to go out with a good battle.”

From the sound of that premise, The Legend of Conan would fall in step with real time, which makes total logistical sense: at 65, Schwarzenegger would have a hard time fooling anyone if he tried to play a warrior still in his prime; as an aging champion looking for one last bit of glory, however… it suddenly becomes deliciously meta. Malmberg himself acknowledges as much:

This movie picks up Conan where Arnold is now in his life, and we will be able to use the fact that he has aged in this story. I love the property of Conan so much that I wouldn’t touch it unless we came up with something worthy. We think this is a worthy successor to the original film. Think of this as Conan’s Unforgiven.

If you didn’t pick up on the finer points of that last quote: Legend of Conan will supposedly ignore both the 2011 reboot and the 1984 sequel film Conan the Destroyer, and will instead tie itself directly to the events of the original film. If you want to hear more from Malmberg about his plan for the movie – or from Schwarzenegger about returning to the role, then head over to Deadline.

As stated, The Legend of Conan is aiming for a 2014 release date.

Out of Arnold’s upcoming slate of films – the western crime drama Last Stand, the Stallone/Schwarzenegger prison thriller The Tomb or even the rumored Twins sequel, Triplets – the most intriguing to me has to be David Ayer’s Ten. Ayer – known for his hard-boiled LA crime tales like Training DayEnd of Watch and Harsh Times – will be getting a bit more literary as he attempts to transform Agatha Christie’s famous murder mystery novel Ten Little Indians into his particular brand of crime tale.

In this version, a team of dirty DEA agents (including Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, Joe Manganiello, Harold Perrineau, Josh Holloway and  Terrence Howard) rob a cartel, believing they’ve gotten away clean. The twist comes as members of the team start getting murdered one by one, leading to much chaos and paranoia.

Check out this pic of Arnold looking badass, which he Tweeted from the set:

  1. Did anyone apart from me quite enjoy the Conan reboot? Caught it on Netflix and it passed the time well enough

    • Can’t say I liked it. Momoa is no Arnold. Looking forward to the original, and in my opinion the best, incarnation of Conan. Just hope he bulks up a little again for the role.

    • I liked it Momoa was good don’t you think he would make a great Lobo.

      • Hmm…This is probably quite honestly one of the best casting choices for Lobo I’ve seen as far as physique and overall likeness to the character goes, Alot better than the Rock. The acting however I would need to see more of but he definitely has the look down though. Good choice…

        • Huh?

    • only the beginning imo

    • The reboot was awesome in a sense for it being more like the books. It was really great if you are more of a Conan fan than an Ahnuld fan.

  2. YES!! The return of Arnold to Conan has been one of my movie dreams, although I was envisioning the title to be “Conan the King” or “King Conan”. Still, it appears they have the same idea that myself and likely many others had hoped for…an aging warrior finally gaining his crown. Bring it on!!

    • Ah, it’s nice to see the hopes of finally finding the answer to the riddle of steel. Wasn’t he attached to a threequel about 10 yrs ago being produced by Milas once again title, “King Conan: Crown of Steel”?

    • Oh Crom yes!!!!! This is gonna happen! A huge Conan/Arnold fan and cannot wait!

The 2011 reboot was not horrible but def was not good either. Weak genesis story and weaker character development made it lack luster. At least Mamoa knows how to swing a sword…lol.

      • I enjoyed the new one with Jason… It was closer to what Conan is supposed to be. It just didn’t do we’ll at all in the box office. It bombed. :(

  3. Some earlier version of me would have found this really cool once but I messed up, I decided to read some of the original Howard literature on Conan a few years back.

The Conan movies are like the X-men movies. It was all a visual experience more then anything; the story were poorly pieced together from different cannon works, which resulted in weird continuity and relationships.

I guess if this can happen then that means Hugh Jackman can back at an old age and do an Old Man Logan movie…

    • I totally agree. However I’m still happy with Ahnuld being King Conan off in their own canon. I’d like to see an Old Man Logan movie 30 years from now with Jackman, that would be great.

    • Yeah but isnt Wolverine a semi-immortal that doesnt age or much much slower than normal? Wolverine is like over 100 years old so would be much longer than 30 years to see an old Wolverine…lol.

  4. Very good. This has potential. Make sure it’s rated R, and having NO ties to the 1984 and 2011 disasters, we could have a hit on our hands, and a perfect way to close the story with the original actor.

  5. As exciting as this sounds I wish they would continue the Momoa Conan. I think if they took it in the right direction he could have been great. They had plans on making it into a James Bond esque serial I believe, like the original was supposed to be.

    • Had it not been so bad, and had Momoa not been so bad in it, perhaps that would have happened. I have no doubt that, in years to come, there will be another attempt to reboot the franchise, but it is difficult to see anyone comparing to Arnold in his prime. I’m glad he is returning to the role and, from what it sounds like, closing out his rendition of the character in a fitting way. Unforgiven was Clint’s masterpiece and swan song as a cowboy. If done well, this could be Arnold’s swan song as a muscle-bound warrior.

  6. I loved the original and loved the 2011 version so this news is pretty awesome.

  7. So I wonder if David Ayer will ever make a film where the law enforcement leads were not corrupt in some way…

    • Hey he has made a movie without corrupt cops and that was end of watch. Not a corrupt law enforcement officer in sight in that one

      • @bat

Ah, the one that I didn’t see, lol. Figures…

    • Well it would have to be a comedy or something. No one would take that concept seriously.

  8. Cant wait for Legend of Conan! Been keeping my fingers crossed for a third Conan movie ever since I first saw the originals about 20 years ago.

  9. I have to admit I always wanted to see how Conan became the old king at the end of CTB, but what that image promised CTD failed to deliver, and this movie may only hint at it in flashbacks. I’d also warn against underestimating the charm imparted to the first movie by the psychosis of John Milius. Despite all of that, this sounds like one to watch.

  10. Damn Arnie looks badass

  11. good news indeed and conan the destroyer was not bad.. if u didnt like grace jones i think she made the movie.. now the reboot was horrible.. also conan was not a viking now was he waiting to meet/goto vahalla.. Crom was his god.. Crom /ˈkrɒm/ is a fictional deity. He is mainly mentioned in swearing by the character Conan the Cimmerian, and “worshipped,” it is presumed, by the bulk of the fictional Cimmerian people. The name Crom is probably derived from the ancient Celtic deity Crom Cruach, with the Cimmerians functioning as proto-Celts in Howard’s pre-historic Hyboria.

    • I think Mako calls Max Von Sydow’s character a “Norseman like my lord” in the narration. Cimmeria is a fiction made of different traits.

      • I think he said, “Northman”.

        • They mean the same thing.

          • No, they don’t. Norseman indicates a a person from OUR earth culture and history (which Conan is not) while a Northman is a generic title that could relate to anyone from any culture or world, as long as the are from that compass direction.

    • The movie version of Conan is an entirely separate entity from the original Robert E. Howard version of Conan. The movie’s Cimmerians are barbarians clearly inspired by the Vikings and Norse who believe they go to Valhalla when they die; Howard’s Cimmerians are explicitly the ancestors of the Irish and Scottish Gaels, and believed in a “sunless place of everlasting mist.” Malmberg was talking about the movie version, not the literary version.

  12. That image at the end of the original with him on the throne is the Conan we want. With a beard and everything. King Conan.

    • Is that the royal we?

  13. It’s finally gonna happen Arnold coming back as conan and I’m really really looking forward to this.

  14. Im alittle skeptical about this. Maybe if the movie was made a few years earlier id be more excited. I loved the original & thought Conan: The Destroyer was good. Never brought myself to see the remake though. Time will tell.

  15. Just simply, welcome back Arnie. As a child of the 80’s gorging on movies it was impossible to ignore his presence. Love the ‘Ten’ picture. First time I’ve ever seen a character of his that looks even close to being an actual regular human type human.

  16. It’ll be just awful. They still haven’t come close to doing Conan justice … and now 25 years later they want to drag back a guy who failed in his first attempt …?

    • Agreed – and you and I may be the only ones who feel this way…

      • I liked what Milius and Oliver Stone did with the first Conan movie and enjoy watching it but the character was very far removed from Howard’s Conan. I agree with you guys that it didn’t do the character justice.

The 2011 movie tried to be more like Howard’s Conan but whoever wrote the script should be shot. They should just take a Howard story like The Scarlet Citadel and turn it into a movie.

  17. Is there their any way we can clone another Arnie? cos I dont want him to get old! I dont want him to stop, for me Arnie and Sly are total legends, I grew up with these two and they cant be replaced, im over the moon he is coming back for Conan if true, there are just so many films I would love to see Arnie come back in, another Terminater film would be crazy!

    • Yes!! I got shot down as a neanderthal when commenting on the re-boot of Conan when it was being made. I mentioned that the originals will never be beaten and I got called all the names under the sun!! Well, those same people agreed that the re-boot was just awful! Its a real shame Arnie is getting on in age, would love him to reprise Dutch in an AVP movie or perhaps John Matrix has his granddaughter taken this time and he goes on a killing spree!! If this Conan is truely going to be made then I will be in the queue waiting to see what the big guy has been up to for the past 25 years or so. Hopefully his rivalry with that camel is still on :)

      • @ ChrisTyper

Not that it matters now, but Arnold mentioned he would of cameo in AVP if he lost the Governor elections first time which we all know the outcome. Paul Anderson even mentioned what his cameo would of been like at the end.

  18. They need to adapt Robert E. Howard’s King Conan novel “Hour of the Dragon.”

    • +9,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

  19. OMFG!!!! YES!!!!!!! When Ahnuld was Governator, I knew he would be the perfect age to play King Conan once his term was up! This is the greatest new of the year!!! Can’t wait!!!!

They better start the movie with Ahuld saying,

    “When I was a fighting-man, the kettle-drums they beat,
    The people scattered gold-dust before my horses feet;
But now I am a great king, the people hound my track
With poison in my wine-cup, and daggers at my back.” -Robert E. Howard, “The Phoenix on the Sword”

  20. “I love the property of Conan so much that I wouldn’t touch it unless we came up with something worthy.”

They don’t have to come up with something worthy, they have the books to reference which is more than worthy. Such as: “The Hour of the Dragon” or “The Phoenix on the Sword” or what this movie should be based on, “The Scarlet Citadel” where he is an older wiser King.

  21. Am I the only one who see’s Chris Helmsworth as a dark horse successor to arnold as CONAN? i mean givem like 10yrs from now and dye the hair and color the eyes……no?

and btw lets not forget the score to the original Conan made the movie great also. Couldnt hurt to rehash that soundtrack for the new one.

  22. About time.. I just wish this movie was made 10 years ago when Arnie was still kicking ass.. now he’s bit too old but I am sure he will do his best.. But seriously.. What a waste of time running for california…

  23. Made my day.

Now if we can just get another final Terminator film from him and one final Predator film from him I will die a happy man.

  25. Arnold´s time is long gone.

I liked Momoa´s Conan, he was finally the resourceful warrior I remember, not the mute musclehead in Millius´movies. Bringing Arnold back is, to me, a step back, motivated only by nostalgic hype.

I could look at Jason Momoa and think “That´s Conan”; the rage in his eyes before the battle, the devious sense of humor in punishing his enemies gave this version of Conan a life of its own.

With Arnold I can only say “That’s Ahnuld with a sword”. The “actor” overwhelms the character, and I hate that. The character gets neutered, limited, takes a back seat.

I think people are taking the Expendables “let´s put the 80’s action stars back on the pay list” too seriously. It was a good action movie throwback joke, but seriously… enough is enough.

  26. You guys all seem to think this is a good idea but my first thought was that they’ve got to be kidding. Arnolds old. I mean really really really old. Which would be okay if he didn’t look it. But he does.

    • You must be 12. Look at the picture of him above, for the movie “Ten”. I’d wager he could easily kick your or my a–. Now, although he is in his mid 60’s, as explained, the Conan he is going to portray is an older Conan, one who, after many battles, has finally gained his crown and is nearing the end of his days. Read the freakin description before you comment.

    • And you obviously have either not seen the ending of the original movie or have just forgotten it where, he is OLD.

      • You guys need your eyes checked. He looks like somebodies beer gutted redneck grandpa. There’s no way he could play a shirtless Conan even if it was an older version. He’s just going to embarrass himself.

He himself has said he needs to change from the hardcore action movies as he’s not capable of doing them anymore. Apparently the Expendables success has gone a little to his head.

        • And you are under some delusion that what you see can’t change. Sure, you can’t dial back the hands of time BUT, one thing Hollywood stars can do is afford the time and expense to get into shape at any age. It’s pretty easy when you make that your, “job”.
