Wow.
Just like that, it seems Matthew Vaughn is off X-Men 3 and Joss Whedon might be up to bat as director.
According to Aintitcool.com they have confirmation straight from Avi Arad that Vaughn is off X-Men 3. There was no reason given except to say that it was not due to creative differences and that Matthew was “heartbroken”.
And on Joss Whedon’s Blog there’s a post talking about the possibility that Whedon might be the new guy.
Nothing confirmed on the Joss Whedon side, of course.

I give the man credit for not wanting to move his family temporarily, but please, how could he NOT know that he’d be on location for an extended period??

I don’t know how keen I’d be on the use of Joss Whedon as a director. His work on Buffy [The Vampire Slayer] was sub-par at best. They should bring in someone with ties to the genre but with an almost ‘out-there’ aura to him.
Perhaps Richard Kelly?
Overall this is really a bummer and I don’t know how the production can possibly move forward on schedule. Then there’s the issue of whoever comes in as director will want to put their particular spin on it so it would probably mean that the vision that Vaughn had for the film will change considerably.
