Will Tyler Mane Raise The Mighty Hammer Of Thor?
Written on August 28, 2007 by Heath McKnight
Tyler Mane (Michael Myers in the Halloween prequel/remake-prequel and Sabretooth in X-Men) may be up for the part of Thor in Matthew Vaughn's (the guy who just did Stardust) upcoming adaptation.
The thing is, this is the second time Mane's name has been associated with the God of Thunder.
Years ago, when rumors of a Thor television series might happen, rumors had Stan "The Man" Lee behind Mane as the titular "Goldilocks." When that fell through, Marvel shelved the multimedia project until recently.
With the actor, writer and director unions' facing a potential strike, studios are getting their films made now, then staggering the releases in case there aren't any key cast and crew available to make movies and TV shows.
Hence, I believe, Thor is going before cameras next year, probably in the early part. The script is by Mark Protosevich, who wrote Will Smith's upcoming I Am Legend.
Also, the JLA, G.I. Joe and Avengers movies could also be rushing towards production because of strike fears.
I wouldn't mind seeing Mane in the title role in a movie that covers the origins of Thor, Odin, Asgard and more. Does this mean he'll still play Sabretooth (rumored, natch) in the Wolverine movie? Anyway you slice it, it should be fun!

Hmmmm...while I always look for the kinda guy that's big'n bulky to play Thor,in the same guy I also look for a guy who could be the crippled Dr.Don Blake (Thor's alias). This guy looks like he could be Thor, but I don't believe he will be convincing at all as frail Doc Blake. They need someone who can play both Thor and Don Blake, not someone who's only got one base covered. So I'm not sure how I feel about this guy.......
Um... two things. How long ago has it been since the Blake character has even been involved in a Thor story? Didn't they abandon that part of the character in the comic books a LOOOONG time ago? Second, even if you did incorporate Blake, how could you possibly use the same actor to play both a weak, lame (as in can't walk) character and the larger than life God of Thunder?
Vic
Vic, 2 things:
The Blake "character" may have been "abandon" long ago,but considering this is an origin story, and assuming they are going with the Classic version, they would need Blake to be a part of the movie. Incase you didn't know,Odin (Thor's dad) banished Thor from Asgard into the body of the frail and crippled Dr. Don Blake because of his pridefulness in the original comix, and Don Blake is basically what Thor would look like if he were a mortal with short hair.I always thought that Blake made Thor a more 3D-ish,relatable,and all around interesting character, and hope to see him in the film.
Allow me to answer your other inquiry with a question: how could you possibly use the same actor to play the timid, mild mannered reporter Clark Kent and the larger than life hero Superman?
You probably know the answer, and it's quite simple. I'm not a big reader of the Thor comics, but it was my understanding that Don Blake was Thor's alias. At least he was for a time, you probably know more about the current version than I do,so I apoligize for my lack of knowledge concerning Thor in the current books.
Vic,you seem kinda angry today. Is everything all right, man?
Kel,
Dude, you're funny. I'm not mad at all, don't know why you're thinking that. I'm just saying that you could easily do a Thor movie without any "Blake" at all. Maybe someone else more familiar with the character can answer the question regarding whether the alter-ego is even still a part of Thor in the comics.
And regarding the Kent/Superman thing: I've always thought that in the movies they were pushing it. :-)
Vic
LOL! Really Vic? You really thought they were pushing it? I never really thought about getting two different actors for Clark and Superman! That is so funny!
And yeah, you could easily do a Thor movie without Blake,I'd just always found the Blake part of the character rather intruiging and hoped they'd use him in the film. I just really don't want to see the movie based on Ultimate Thor,I guess. As far as I'm concerned, the only Ultimate version of any character that's any good is the super cool Sam Jackson inspired Nick Fury.
And in regards to your being mad,I dunno what I was thinking. Guess it was how I looked at your comment or something. My bad, lol!
I'm really thrilled about this strike, man! It's a good/bad thing to me. While I'm really happy that our anticipated films are finally getting made,I really don't want to see the filmakers just make a movie to make a movie. That's how we ended up with the original Roger Corman Fantastic Four back in the early 90's,remember?
If true, Great choice! Tyle Mane has the "look" of Thor. KEL, the think about Dr. Blake is that he really doesn't look like Thor on that both have blonde hair. Marvel's Thor/Dr. Blake transformation is more like DC's Shazam/Billy Batson(huge man/kid)transformation instead of Superman/Clark Kent or Batman/Wayne (guy changing clothes)transformation.
Also heard this movie will be only based in the fantasy world of Asgard. Maybe Blake will be in the sequel?
Yo,Adrian, you've got a good point there. The transformation of Blake into Thor IS definitely more like the Billy Batson/Captain Marvel (another fave of mine) thing than the Clark Kent/Superman thing. I still hope that Blake is part of the movie, and I was thinking the other day that it would be cool if they told the Thor story from Blake's point of view (lame Dr. discovers he's really the god of thunder) instead of from Thor's point of view (Norse god discovers he's cursed to live in a frail, mortal shell). That would be pretty cool I think, plus the audience could identify with Blake a little more because they'd learn more about Thor as Doc Blake learned more about him. If you think about it,it'd be a real road to self discovery for Blake, him finding out he can turn into a Norse god and all.
BTW...you wouldn't happen to be related to a Cane Adrian, would you?
And now that I've thought more about this,he would be a good choice for Thor. Now who could be Blake......
Sorry, but no KEL, no relation to Cane Adrian. Though,Cane does have good comments. My pick for Blake would be the guy from Rome(Kevin Smith?)the one thought would be Thor. He would make a excellent Dr. Blake.
Or maybe Kevin Smith would be a better Cap?
Adrian, dude,Kevin Smith? Clerks Kevin Smith? We are talking about the same Kevin Smith here, right? You REALLY think HE would make a GOOD Captain America or Doc Blake? That's pretty wild, man,if we are talking abut the same guy.
Oops! Geesh, ment Kevin Mckidd from HBO's Rome not Kevin Smith. Even though Mckidd is a little short for Cap, he still feel better for that role.
Oh thank God! >shew
