A WWII thriller directed by an acclaimed filmmaker (who is responsible for two major superhero franchises, no less), starring an international cast (including a box-office super-star turned public punchline) and featuring an awesome trailer.
Is this really a film you want to dump in the “film wasteland” of February?
Apparently, that’s the mindset over at MGM/United Artists.
For the second time now, Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie has been pushed back; this time to February 13, 2009 where it will face off against Disney’s Confessions of a Shopaholic and Sony’s Pink Panther 2.
The film was originally slated for an August 8th release, then it was bumped to June 27th before it settled on October 3. But at least that move made sense.

Summer is just too damn competitive for a WWII-themed project to have any real chance of making an impact commercially. On the other hand, October opens up its Oscar-chances as well as box-office potential.
So why the sudden change to next February?
Oh, it’s to “take advantage of an opening in the schedule for the President’s Day weekend.”
Uh yeah, sure it is.
The film must be terrible. There’s simply no other explanation or way the studio can effectively spin this.

Tom Cruise with a bad german accent going after Hitler.

That’s the first reaction I had back months ago when I first heard about this.
Now I’m excited because its looking like the Cruise-Unit has lost it…
He was allways so concerned about his sexual tendancies getting out and ruining his macho image (heehee) now it seems the scientology bs and Oprahs couch dance have done just that.He wanted to seem like he was in love with a female so bad he took his eye off the ball (so to say) and now look at his street cred.

I’ve heard on previous Screen Rant articles that this film sucks and that the actors all speek English. That kinda takes the reality out of it. (IMO). And now there’s rumors that tom’s accent is laughable. (Good news on a Monday).
Sounds too me like they watched the final cut and just barfed. There prob going to re-edit the vocal overdubs.
How long before a Top Gun reboot or Risky Business 2, Raybans revenge!!

In real life Hitler had all these characters killed. When they bumbled the plot.
Tommy should leave the nazi episodes to Star Trek and Steven Speilberg.
(Band of Brothers was prob the best WW2 films I’ve ever seen)

As far as I know at least they’re portraying Hitler as the bad guy in this movie. These days, you never know… More likely to see a movie made about atrocities committed by the Allies in WWII than about the gas chambers.

Cruise as a German with an eye patch! Is it just me or did this spell comedy on the first take or what?

This seems pretty good, in all but one aspect. Obvious which that is!
It reminds me of the Last Samurai. Pretty good cast, and good film, and in all but one aspect.
With the exception of Cruise, the rest of the cast seemed like a dream. Bill Nighy, Kenneth Brannagh, Terrance Stamp, Tom Wilkinson - all more than capable of pulling off this kind of movie, and to have them all in the same one?
It sounded too good to actually expect it to be pulled off, I guess.
The guy has been nominated for 3 Oscars and 6 Golden Globes, 3 of which he has won so no way can you tell me that he has “limited” range.
Having read he script, I know this film is gonna turn out to be fantastic.

The Golden Globes are a pure schmooze award.
