Casting an “unknown” is the way to go. The TV show is quite different from any of the concepts for the movie I’ve seen so far (Superman should actually fly on occasion in the movie, for example), so casting Welling doesn’t make sense. Regardless of who is cast as Superman, some people will be ecstatic about the choice, and others will be mortified by it.

As for the casting call, that in and of itself doesn’t mean Welling is out of the running, although I suspect he was never really in the running. When George Eads and Jorja Fox were temporarily fired from CSI, CBS sent out casting calls to replace them. As if the acting world isn’t tough enough, it must be heartwarming for those actors to know that sometimes they’re auditioning for a role that never really existed in the first place.
