I try to save people from watching junk on TV or at the movies, but I also like to alert you to stuff you might not want to miss. If you’re a long suffering Star Trek fan (like I am), I think it might be time to tune in to Star Trek: Enterprise this upcoming season.
Yes, I realize the show has been weak… I’m constantly comparing it to Stargate SG-1 and it fails miserably in that light. However, there is reason for hope. For the first time since Star Trek: DS9 someone other than Brannon Braga is in charge of the writing staff.

Last season Manny Coto joined the staff as co-executive producer, and he was responsible for some of the better episodes of season three. This year Manny takes over the responsibility of running the writing room. Berman and Braga have some input to the storylines and have final approval/disapproval power, but that’s it. Manny is generating the stories and determining the direction of the show.
The reason I’m recommending that you try a few episodes this upcoming season is that Manny is a die hard TOS fan and his goal for the show is to turn Enterprise into a true prequel to the Trek universe. The “Temporal Cold War” storyline that has gone nowhere for three years will be resolved within the first couple of episodes of the new season, and from there we’re on to newer (and hopefully, better) things.
There will be an extended story centering around a Vulcan civil war involving Romulans, and yes they will incorporate and not violate the TOS “we’ve never seen Romulans” rule. Manny is also trying to bring William Shatner in for an appearance (they’re negotiating the money aspect right now) and Brent Spiner will be making an appearance as well.
There are some new writers as well: Alan Brennert and Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens. The Reeves-Stevens duo wrote the Star Trek novel: “Federation” (which was a great Trek story, BTW).
Let’s give Enterprise a chance and see what happens.

This show could use a shot in the arm. Let’s hope Manny Coto give it the boost it needs. I’m not a big fan of cameos from other series, but I suppose I’ll have to reserve judgment until I see them. (Example: Q started showing up everywhere after TNG was cancelled.) So far, it sounds promising, but even the best writers on the planet can’t make up for generally weak casting. The British guy (Reed, I think?) is on thin ice in my book, and Tripp and the captain have more than qualified for a one-way trip out the airlock.

Part of my complaint about the show is that for the most part I just don’t care about the characters. Hopefully the writing will change that.

I stated at the end of the last season that Enterprise needed to explore more of the aliens only glimpses in TOS. It looks like Coto plans to do just that.
If the writing was as good throughout the run as the last season there would not have been a last season. The writing was phoned in until the last season then it started getting interesting just when they knew their necks were on the chopping block. Paramount blew the franchise with weak movie writing and weak series writing in recent years. GR is spinning underground.
Firs of all, I am not a Star Trek freak although I have seen all of the series and movies. When I first started watching Enterprise I was very sceptic about it because there was almost no connection with the “old” Star Trek universe. I soon became fond of it and here are my reasons why: The crew is “more human”; Ship’s “primitive” technology; The idea of vulnerability; The photography and more. I am now used to not having any of the other popular characters from ST and I like it so I’m not looking forward to these cameo roles. The temporal cold war is nice, and the third season was just great! The only thing I didn’t like about the third season were the intro music and title - the old ones were better. The proof that the quality doesn’t depend on the names of the actors is Nemesis. If the upcoming episodes are as good as the ones from the third season, I say give Enterprise a chance. Who knows? You might even grow to love it!
