The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released their nominations for the 80th annual Academy Awards, to take place February 24, 2008. Unless the writers strike forces a delay, or, shudder, a Golden Globes-like press conference.
Here are the Best Picture nominees:
Atonement (Focus Features)
A Working Title Production
Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Paul Webster, Producers
Juno (Fox Searchlight)
A Dancing Elk Pictures, LLC Production
Lianne Halfon, Mason Novick and Russell Smith, Producers
Michael Clayton (Warner Bros.)
A Clayton Productions, LLC Production
Sydney Pollack, Jennifer Fox and Kerry Orent, Producers
No Country for Old Men (Miramax and Paramount Vantage)
A Scott Rudin/Mike Zoss Production
Scott Rudin, Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, Producers
There Will Be Blood (Paramount Vantage and Miramax)
A JoAnne Sellar/Ghoulardi Film Company Production
JoAnne Sellar, Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Lupi, Producers
After the jump are more nominees and some brief thoughts. I know Vic and our readers will have some thoughts about this.

Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Tommy Lee Jones in In the Valley of Elah (Warner Independent)
Viggo Mortensen in Eastern Promises (Focus Features)
Best Actress nominees:
Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Golden Age (Universal)
Julie Christie in Away from Her (Lionsgate)
Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose (Picturehouse)
Laura Linney in The Savages (Fox Searchlight)

Best Director nominees:
Julian Schnabel: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (Miramax/Pathé Renn)
Jason Reitman: Juno (Fox Searchlight)
Tony Gilroy: Michael Clayton (Warner Bros.)
Joel Coen and Ethan Coen: No Country for Old Men (Miramax and Paramount Vantage)
Paul Thomas Anderson: There Will Be Blood (Paramount Vantage and Miramax)
To see the complete list, check out the official Oscars website.
So here are my brief thoughts: Interesting that Cate Blanchett is nominated in both the Best Actress and Supporting Actress categories. Will that cancel her out? Why is George Clooney nominated? His track record of late is pretty poor, with more bombs than hits. Is it his political activism that has put him on the list? I do want to see Michael Clayton, though.
To be fair, there are a lot of nominated movies I need to watch, so no predictions from me. However, I’d say it’s a lock that the Coen Bros. may win their first Directing Oscar for No Country for Old Men and Diablo Cody will win an Oscar for Best Screenplay for Juno.
What are your thoughts and predictions?

ATONEMENT’s not going to win Best Picture. Period. If it stood a real chance, it would have been nominated for Director and Editing. Its in the “the nomination is an honor on its own” category (i.e. no chance in Hell it wins!)
If any film’s going to “pull a CRASH” over NO COUNTRY, its MICHAEL CLAYTON imo.
Juno doesn’t deserve to be on the Best Picture list. Fortunately there’s stiff competition and it won’t win. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t a terrible movie, but it’s def not Best Picture material. Just my thoughts.
If Javier Bardem doesn’t win Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as Chughur in “No Country for Old Men”, I’m going to have go to Hollywood and blow something up. :o)
I’m glad Heath posted this because I just don’t follow a lot of the movies that end up on the Oscar list. BTW, “Juno” is a movie website favorite, people who run sites have been raving about it for months. I still haven’t seen it myself.
Vic
Man I sure have some targets for you John, but this is a respectable site and I just can’t go there but man. There’s this place I really ,,,

Anyway..Juno, get out of here! CRAP-ALERT.
This film is a movie rendition of a ABC after school special. Pwheeeh
Take it outside!!

There Will Be Blood looks good its interesting , how the HBO western Deadwood has influenced how westerns are done now. Cheers Deadwood!! Would be great to see a Deadwood film!!!!

If Atonement wins best picture I hope the Klingons invade the Kodak theatre and transport the production staff out of cell phone range. Take away there online capabilities and they be dead within hours.
Ka`Plah! John.
I’ve seen all the films nominated except for There will be Blood which hasn’t been released here as far as I know. Michael Clayton in my opinion is the best and should appeal to the masses. Marion in La Vie on Rose is superb and I would love her to win - I saw it twice and cried both times but I doubt the yanks will vote for anythig foreign. It’s a pity.

Steve, I’ve heard that Atonement was kinda bland but if “No Country…” doesn’t get an Oscar, Kahless will be let loose.

I see a Movie in theatre every week yet ive seen only 1 of the 5 best picture nominees.
They always pick theones that don’t make money, and then those 5 films somehow get into every other category like screenplay and cinematography
3 cheers for the writer’s strike destroying the shitty oscars
Yea Rob I kinda agree.
^
Btw, what 5 films would you like to see as Best Picture?
Thanks Vic.
