Add this one to my list of movies that should NOT be remade, revisited, re-imagined or otherwise messed with.
Zak Penn is working on a screenplay for a new version of the classic World War II film The Dirty Dozen. If you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out - It’s the story of a tough Army officer who has been tasked with recruiting ex-military criminals for a suicide mission deep into Nazi territory. The film starred a man’s man list of actors from the 60’s: Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson, Jim Brown & George Kennedy. It also had some not so macho but awesome supporting actors like Telly Savalas, John Cassavettes and Donald Sutherland.

The original is one of those movies that I like to watch at least once a year and I really dread a remake of this one. It falls outside my list of rules for movies that are ok to revisit. Well known, beloved classics should remain off the table when remake possibilities are raised. If you must do a remake of an older movie, pick a film that was not that great to begin with (the original Ocean’s 11, for example), or a movie that is dated due to pacing or other reasons (The Thomas Crown Affair). Both of those films were ripe for remaking and both of them turned out very well and in my opinion far superior to the original versions.
I dread to think of the cast of actors that they might populate a remake of The Dirty Dozen with… Heck, in this politically correct world I could even see them adding a woman to the group!
I really hope this one goes into Development Hell.

Yeah, with the exception of a few,I think it’s kinda cheesy to do remakes of classic films. Could you imagine if someone tried to remake “Wizard of Oz” or the Marx Bros. (you might not know who they are) films? That would be awful, some things are best left the way they are.

No spit…..Sci Fi’s doin’ a Wiz of Oz series? I had no idea. I usually only watch the sci fi channel about every few months or so (I know, weird). I’m defenitely going to try to catch some of season 2 of “Who wants to be a Superhero”,I hope it’ll be better than the first. I’m think’n about watchin’ that new Flash Gordon series this August. I hope they’ll keep the superhero tone of Flash and not make the show TOO much like the new Battle Star Galactica series.
Now that you mention it,I do remember something called the “The Wiz” (LOL). It was hillarious in it’s own stupid way…..
No it should not be remade the original actors had a real grit to them, Telly Savalas, Jim Brown, Charles Bronson, Posey “I don’t like to be pushed”, can’t remember his real name sorry, Lee Marvin etc, with the exception of Donald Sutherland, all hard men..Now apart from Vin Diesel and The Rock can’t think of any real present day hard men in Hollywood with the presence to play those roles…so leave it to be a classic…no touchee!!!

What’s good about a Dirty Dozen remake is that the period would still have to be WWII; no recent conflict would fit the plot - or the requirements of the mission. It could be done, thusly, with some of today’s actors. As long as the producers understand that it’s supposed to be a 100% testosterone-laden macho film. Chances are, it won’t be very good, but one never knows.
