Ok, folks… here’s your chance to get a real taste of what Speed Racer will be like before you decide whether to plunk down your hard earned money for a ticket.
I’m not going to tell you what I think until I see a few of your reactions below. BTW, I will be adding my two cents to the list of Speed Racer reviews some time this weekend. I wanted my first viewing of it to be in IMAX so I didn’t catch a pre-screening of the film.

Looks interesting but likely a rental. There are too many other movies out this year i AM looking forward to. Also, it would probably be beneficial to be high on acid when watching this. While visually stimulating, it almost looks TOO visually stimulating, at least for my older eyes.
I’m seeing it in IMAX tonight, so I won’t watch the 7 minute sneak peak. I’ll let you guys know what I think after the show. I expect a good popcorn show, so we’ll see.
Aaa… Just too much going on and not feeling the excitement. Looks ok, but not strong enough to bet Ironman this weekend,IMHO.
“close your eyes and listen” Is this a joke?
This movie looks awful. Its far too corny and cheesey (the two worst possible applicable words to any movie) to attract any one over 14 years of age. I would not enjoy myself stuck in a theatre after paying $10 for this.
Alot of the CGI scenes look poor and fall apart at times. The colourful everything and bad acting make a bad combo.
I aint seeing this movie, I’ll download it upon DVD release.
Look out kids 790’s in the house.
T-minus 20 min and counting before I go into the world of Speed Racer.
I’ll let you know what I think in about 2 hours.
Don’t worry Jimmy the C, I won’t give any spoilers.
I watched 2 minutes of this and I want those 2 minutes of my life back. This isn’t even a rental.
PASS.
Of course when I review it I’ll need to keep in mind anything from Pixar, where it’s aimed at kids but their films are excellent on any scale.
Vic
Does exactly what it’s supposed to do, movie is supposed to appeal to the 8-12 year old boy crowd and any kid that ever was a fan of the show while watching it on schoolday afternoons instead of doing their homework. It isn’t Citizen Kane nor is it supposed to be. It’s supposed to slick and cheezy and simplistic. Anyone expecting more is obviously taking this waaaaaay too seriously.
First let me say I’m a huge speed racer fan from the 70’s.
THIS FILM WAS TOTALLY AWESOME!
WOOOOOO. BABY. WAS. THAT A BLAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The acting, the effects, the humor, the racing , the characters were ALL PERFECT!!!
The kids were allready lining up when I walked out. Sure the film takes massive liberties with the laws of Physics but this is a Cartoon, come to life and its really amazing.
I swear I felt like a kid watching this film.
Just awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Allmost every actor steals the scenes there in. Chim Chim and Spridel are fricken Halarious. Ricci is smokin hot. Emile looks just like a live action Speed. Racer X was awesome. The villians were over the top and great. Its a great film.
Oh yeah and there’s a great message in the film.
Vic is the film rated G or PG? There’s no swearing in the movie and there’s a cool device they use when drivers have to eject.
Car_Fu is here!
COOL BEANS FOREVER!!!
Just looked at my ticket stub. Yep it was PG. Hmm
The reason.
Very intense kenetic racing action. Explosions. And some nasty villians and yep “Parana fish”. (They didn’t forget anything).
Funny as I’m driving home going 70mph. Its like I’m hardly moving compared to what I just saw. Lol.
Rob the cheesy effects all come together in the theater.
Spolier alert
Really
Massive. Spoliers.
(Spell check)
Spoiler alert
Don’t wanna hear any whinning that I didn’t warn ya.
Jump jump jump jump.
Jump jump jump jump.
If you listen carfully thats the sound effect the Mach 5 makes when it jumps….
They put the word “jump” thru a processor and tweaked it.
Check that out!
The way the Watchoskis edited the film was just amazing. It was a blended mix of scenes that would overlap in a way never seen before. The images gave you the impression you had just smoked a tiny bowl of Maui Wowee. I was complety sober and I walked out like I was stoned.(Without the nagging hunger).
The begining of the film is a slick sequence of flashbacks all leading up to a race where once Speed gets in the lead he races alongside the haunting memory of his dead brother, Raze. The entire family is a bloodline of racers.
There’s 3 major races in the film interspaced by a great story of corporate insider corruption and race tampering.
Chim Chim and Spridle kick ass. There allmost like a comedy act within the movie.
The kid that plays Spridle seemed like a seasoned comedian. He was amazing to watch and had alot of really funny lines. And the chimpanzee wasn’t an effect. He was real and pretty funny. Especally when they go on a suger rush that was like an acid trip thru Wonkas car factory. Some of there karate moves are halarious. Especally when animated like a cartoon. Everything cartoon and cgi is blended throughout the movie in a way that can only be described as majestic.
The villains were played at just the right tone that they looked like cartoons. It was a total live action cartoon and it worked. (Kinda reminded me of Dick Tracy villians).
The sound effects and music complete the film
Home run Watchoskis!! Great family film. And I usually hate family films.
Even if this film dosnt do well this weekend, its an instant cult classic and will do better once word of mouth gets out about it.
well…Currently, its already got 133 counted reviews on rotten tomotoes, a full boat load (iron man’s got 183). Anyways, the VAST majority, 87 of the 133, give it a “Rotten” making this movie a nice 35%.
Looks like I was right. Aside from the majority of critics saying its simply not that great, my local pals say they didn’t enjoy the experience of it that much in theatre and would of rather not seen it. That’s more than enough for me to give it a pass, even if I didn’t watch that terrible 7-minute bad-acted intro of the movie.
I think you guys are right, its definately enjoyable mainly for the young young kids, its too bad they tried to market is as more
That’s cool Rob.
IMO the critics don’t get this kinda film. Its too far ahead of its time.
I felt like a kid again today and that’s worth more than the 8 bucks I paid.
Finally! A whole movie dedicated to hyper activity!
So parents, fill up your children with Coca Cola and candy and get ready for the ride of your life!
Epileptics watch out! If it’s not the crazy colors the get you, the hectic cutting and, blinking lights and the surreal, jelly-bean design sure will!
Do I love this movie? Nope. Since I dropped the little white pills some 15 years ago there’s no fun in this kinda movie anymore. Sorry.
ZAR.
(not entirely funny)
ZAR have you seen the film?
790: Certainly not! 7 minutes were quite enough to convince me completely!
ZAR.
The only sponser that stood out was Motorola.
Motorola tech does suck IMO.
Inspector Detector is on the case!
No Prob, ZAR I respect your opinion…..

790, too bad you paid to get in. I was already lighthearted because there were some girls from National City Bank handing out free movie passes just outside the entrance. And they worked! (Usually passes aren’t good for new releases.)
I too walked out like I was high, and I’ve never done drugs.
First off, I have to say, THE BAD GUY IS AL GORE. Tell me if I’m wrong. There’s even a scene where he busts an ice sculpture–to which I told my buddy, “So much for the icebergs melting.”
Piratedan, you’re right on the money. I used to watch this after school! I wasn’t even the biggest fan, but I’m familiar and probably saw all the episodes.
This movie had so many homages to the original. There was one section where they let loose on the melodramatic anime gasps and yells. I can’t remember, but I swear there were tips of the hat to other movies as well. I know for a fact the phrase “get smart” was in there.
This movie was fun, vivid, smooth, daring, fast, and I will admit there were a couple lump-in-the-throat moments that sent me back to either my own imagination-heavy boyhood or simply to feelings I had watching the original. And something about the excited looped musical intro (a piano imitating a car revving?) got to me. Oh I’m 45 so add all the sentiment to post-midlife crisis maybe? Haha.
WHAT A RIDE. MORE, MORE.
There’s some fun stuff leading into the credits, including some takes on the original theme. But alas, no “easter egg” at the end.
10-4, Ready for more.
Jimmy the C!
SPEED RACER: THE ANTIDOTE FOR CLOVERFIELD
Cloverfield was black & white, shaky, suspenseful, mysterious, and deadly to the circle of friends depicted. It left you sort of glad they didn’t show you more or they would have ruined it.
Speed Racer has flair like God reached his fingers down to a fireworks display and started streaking the colors across the horizon…..in loops and circles like someone was tickling him. The movie, like the Mark V, is sleek and shiny with unexpected special features. You leave staggering from the weight and thrill…visually bloated! There are car crashes but you know that no one is ever in danger. It’s a magical world of recovery and parachutes and other ways to bail without blood.
Talk about Speed,
Cloverfield was a film that moved to fast for me.
I t think i wil have to see it again before I make a final judgment.
as for Speed Racer,
I await Vics review .
nikki finkes early estimates:
Iron Man made about 15 million yesterday .
The film will be staying in top with over 50 million and 177 million overall.
What Happens in Vegas made 6.8 million
Speed Racer made 6 million even.
Made of Honor made 2.5 million.
this is a 20% increase over last years box office.
Too Bad, Speed Racer is an awesome film.
;-(
ATTENTION CYNICS NEED NOT APPLY
Like any auto aficionado would tell you, a race car is a compromise and the same
can be said about a movie based on a Manga - futuristic world centered on racing.
If you know this walking in to see the Worchowski brothers “Speed Racer” then
your way ahead of the curve to make this an enjoyable outing. I went to the IMAX
experience with my sister and niece in tow. It was my birthday and Mothers Day is
Sunday so we split the costs and made an evening out of it. Now as a kid, I’d
Watched “Speed Racer” so I knew a lot of the basics of the stories. It wasn’t
The case with my sister or my niece. A lot of the tech was lost on them and
so most of the action seemed very unreal.
Because of the faithfulness and ability of the production companies to achieve the look and feel of animation in a live action format, the movie has a bright carnival taffy look. Some have dubbed it a cotton candy look. What wasn’t lost on me though is that the actors really did try to do their best to convey the feeling, tone, and vibe of the original show. The Feelings and emotions still come thru; Part of the story is uniquely Japanese, which amazingly finds common ground with America in the arena of family values.
Those values, mostly harkening back to my grand parents generation, will be lost on
many 21st century youth. Hopefully it will find it’s niche and do well enough so that
It can be another avenue of family oriented films. This is my hope as I sat and enjoyed
It for what it was. I even found a place in the middle of the movie where my remaining popcorn stash regained its savor.
My sister felt that the execution was all wrong and that Mr. Hirsch has made a very big career blunder. Time will tell, hopefully the cynics won’t have the last word. I give it three stars, for a good origin story and the dedication of everyone involved to making a family oriented film.
Well, I didn’t think the movie was all that. I did like the racing, it was a thrill ride, but the rest of the movie was wanting to me. The continual flashbacks started getting on my nerves and some of the acting was almost as bad as Transformers. Between races (there are about 4 races I think), I actually fell asleep. The movie is definately for kids. There were some good laughs from Chim Chim and Stridel.
The movie does have a plot, some of the actors did well, the races were the best part of the movie, but I would have to give it 3 out of 5. Iron Man is definately safe for now.
where’s that review?
Yeah Jimmy it will be intersting to see I Vic gets this movie.
I’m sure he’s typing it up as we speak.
(Man, the internet is right I need to spell better).
Yeah Jimmy it will be interesting to see if Vic gets this movie.
I’m sure he’s typing it up as we speak.

I’ve been reading comments on other sites and this film is a hit with the fans but some non_fans think its horrible.
I can only say that I’m glad they made this film for the fans…!
One thing I love about the Wachoskis, they don’t care about critics.
They do whatever they want.
I see now why they don’t give interviews.
Even if this film dosnt beat Iron Man this weekend I was still blown away.
Even more than I was watching Iron Man.
However,
I am happy that Iron Man is still doing well.
I’m on my way out to get the video game.
I’ll have to say that it’s strictly for kids and big time fans of the original who pine for a fresh look at the characters.
I’m sitting on the fence regarding rating… it’ll either be 2.5/5 or 3/5 absolute tops. But probably the former.
Vic
Stars! The WB logo is made of Stars!
Everybody here is right, it’s not the same caliber of show as “IronMan.” What’s strange is
that my sister, a non techie person liked
“Transformers” and has said she definitely won’t
be seeing “Ironman.” So go figure.. Maybe parents
don’t really want to see films with their kids anymore but would rather advocate something like “Speed Racer” to send them to see.
So Valis did you pass out after that or what?
Yeah (the old man) I don’t get the hate that Speed Racer is generating here.
The film is clearly polarising people.
Its sad that critics can’t see the fun in this movie. All they want to do is compare it to Iron Man.
I feel pretty sad for the folks that didn’t GET this film. I havnt seen such a fantastic family movie in years. (Not a pixar fan).
Someone reported that it was over 2 hours long. I could have sworn the film went by in 30 min.
I’m sure after this weekend Speed will do over 20 mil and will continue to find an audience next weekend.
