George Lucas is finally planning to release the Special Edition versions of the original Star Wars trilogy o?n DVD. The release is currently scheduled for September 21. It will include director’s commentary for all three films and a “making of” documentary. Purists hoping to see the movies in their original theatrical versions will be disappointed, since those were destroyed when the Special Edition versions were released in theaters.

Yup, I can’t wait to see that crappy CGI version of Jabba the Hut in Episode 5 again.
I don’t know what Lucas’ problem is with the originals. It really is a slap to the fans that he won’t make those available. Thank goodness he wasn’t in charge of “War of the Worlds” or he’d go back and redo that with CGI ships and who knows what other changes.
Greedo shoots first… bah.

That’s a good point about the Greedo scene. Han Solo acted like a whipped wuss in Return of the Jedi, but apparently Lucas felt the need to inject similar behavior into him as far back as the introduction of his character to the series.
It’s a real pity, too. Can you imagine a feature that lets you choose between the original and SE versions of the movies, or even a “making of” feature for the scenes that were edited? That’s what DVD’s are made for, and we won’t see that. I doubt Lucas is losing sleep over it, though. This DVD set will almost certainly set sales records, despite all its shortcomings. That’s been a fairly common theme for the Star Wars movies ever since 1999 (and some would argue 1983), don’t you think?
