Until recently I’d never heard this word used in reference to films. I think that the first time was Batman Begins. Now every other film seems to be a “reboot”.
Now A Nightmare on Elm Street is getting the “reboot” treatment via Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes production shingle.
To be honest with you, I’ve never been a fan of the Nightmare films - they’ve never been of much worth, but they were schlocky entertainment and had a certain charm. They were a cheap type of horror that isn’t made by studios anymore.

To a certain generation Robert Englund is horror icon Freddie Krueger. I’m going to hazard a guess and say that all the writers at Screen Rant fit into this age bracket.
I feel that this new reboot craze is ruining the Hollywood system. I’m fine on sequels… make 20 of them for all that I care, but the reboot, or lets be honest: remake, is just a cheap way of squeezing an extra buck from the teen market.
The film won’t get a writer until after the strike, so there is no director or cast attached yet.
I’m pretty sure that original Elm Street director Wes Craven won’t be getting a call, and I really can’t imagine Johnny Depp making a cameo.

However, I really hope that this one stalls on the production line.

I’m not sure I personally would like a remake. Elm Street had its own genra as far as I can see. But my kids are at the age where I started watching Freddy and I think to be able to give them a part of my childhood…

Yup, I think you’re right. I think “reboot” is the new “sequel.”
I think that the reason is that some franchises have been sequeled to death… After 10 “Halloween” or “Star Trek” movies, just creating an 11th one goes over with a thud. People think “oh, it’s just another lame sequel.”
But with a reboot/remake/re-imagining the studios can promote a movie as an modern update or a “fresh take” on a well loved existing name. So it comes across as a brand new movie instead of just another chapter in a tired series.

I don’t follow that sort of film that closely, but yeah, I think I did hear that a while back. That might have been a bit TOO creepy, though.

I thought the first Nightmare on Elm Street was an AWESOME horror flick because it was original, much like Halloween or Friday the 13th (bear in mind that I am NOT really a horror buff!). The idea was fresh and it was creepy and Englund MADE that character. I do NOT like the idea of a remake, much like I didn’t like the idea of a Halloween remake (which I still haven’t seen). I can’t believe that Hollywood is SO out of ideas that they can’t come up with original characters anymore. Then again, if The Grudge or Saw is the best they can come up with, maybe it IS time to give Freddy a new lease on life…..

Yeah, I’ve never been particularly interested in Nightmare, and I’m even less interested in a re imagining of something that was completely ridiculous to begin with. It was pretty modern and far out there to begin with; what are they going to do? Add more depth to Freddy a la Rob Zombie’s Halloween? Please no.
I love these movies. Got DVDs of all of them. I feel like Nightmare movies are part of my generations ‘culture’. If I ask younger kids they have no idea what I am talking about. If Hollywood will do more sequels I will watch but I don’t need a reboot.
To say at short and simple : A nightmare without Robert Englund? Thanks no!

Reboots too me are also another way Studios can get away with saying (we don’t know what to do?) So here ya go! Repackaged crud.
