My gut is telling me that the new Star Trek movie by J.J. Abrams is going to be great and will inject new life into the long-running franchise. I could end up being completely wrong, but that’s what it feels like right now.
In a Q&A session over at TrekMovie.com, Abrams and others involved in the production answered fan questions regarding the film. Read on to get some insight into their vision for Star Trek.

First off, Visual Effects Supervisor Roger Guyett stated that there will be about 1,000 visual effects shots in the film. On a similar note, Abrams stated that they tried to use real sets and props wherever possible, within the constraints of the budget. He wants the film to be the opposite of George Lucas’ last three Star Wars movies (he didn’t say that specifically, but that’s the gist) where actors spend all their time acting in front of green screens.
Other important points:
- They were inspired in part and have great respect for the Star Trek novels.
- When will we get the first full trailer? Try early to mid-summer.
- While being a serious stab at Trek, the film will incorporate some humor, just as the original series did.
- Abrams danced around the question of whether the Enterprise would be a CGI model or a practical one, but I’m positive it’ll be CGI.
- The doors on the Enterprise will have the familiar “swoosh” sound effect. 
In related news, James Cawley, who is the guy who is behind the fan-based Star Trek: New Voyages will have a cameo in the film and had some things to say about his set visit. So you know, Cawley is a rabid original series fan.
His thoughts on the sets:
I like the set. The bridge is spectacular, absolutely stunning, but it is not what I would have done. But I think the fans are going to go ‘woah’ I think people are going to be genuinely stunned. I think people are going to be impressed. It is a beautiful set.
Regarding the uniforms:
The uniforms are perfect, spot on perfect. I wouldn’t have done anything any different. When I saw the look of what he was going for, he’s got it.
Keep in mind that those are the comments of a big-time Star Trek purist.

I wonder if its an exageration. If not should be a hell of a ride.
I HOPE they didn’t change the uniforms!!!
But from what I hear here, it’s pretty likely they stuck with the ones I’ve seen. Minor alterations happens, but the overall look I am sure stayed the same.
I just can’t wait to see it on FILM!!!!

Recent comments on TM also reviel that the uniforms are pretty much perfect acording to James Cawley. Producer of Star Trek New Voyages.

Well, it’s beginning to sounds like they’re getting the visuals right. That still leaves my biggest concern: Orci and Kurtzman wrote the script.
And Flame - yeah, I hear you. We’ll just have to wait and see. I pray HARD that this is better than Transformers and that they understand they have to take a different approach.
They did OK on MI:III…

Hey Vic,
Well, I just got word the other day that Michael was doing the score for Star Trek. I almost jumped out of my seat when I heard it! I was praying for this and I am so glad J.J. got him!!! THE BEST news! I love Michael, he’s such a talented guy, I hope to work with him one day.
That aside, I was just calling a friend to check up on the score to Lost season 3, because I wasn’t able to get in touch with anyone from Michael’s group to confirm a release date for the score. And then instead of the info I wanted I got a little present (I call it a present) because when he said Michael was doing the score I was so excited. I’m not sure I should be saying this, though… I just though it was official. In case it isn’t don’t spread the word just yet. :/
Anyway, Michael is incredibly talented and I first met him during the Medal of Honor scorings and it was amazing. I was in love right away. He was like a new John Williams to me. Yeah I am a Williams fan amongst others.
However, in all of his work, going from heavy action to heavy drama, to the spooky and the sweet and almost romantic, there’s just one element I think he’ll grab in this round. The magical feeling that was James Hornors contribution such as the tracks from Star Trek three : Returning to Vulcan and The Katra Ritual which caught something so mystical and magical that it’s still very potent today. The soft melodic tunes such as Williams Fortress of Solitude in Superman and many others. I think this is where Giacchino will show us that. Though I don’t know how big of an action movie this will be, if there will be room at all for those subtle melodic tunes to flow through the veins of this movie, but I’m sure we’ll hear something quite exciting!!!
IT’S great being a Trek Fan again… ahhh…. It’s like coming home to people you’ve missed (in this case it’s the Enterprise and the environment). Let’s just hope that everything is alright when we finally go home… and they are as pleasant as we wish it to be…
I hear you on the “family” vibe. I just don’t want to get my hopes up TOO much on this. I’m trying to remain cautiously optimistic.

Personally TOS had a certain musical sound. Subtile chello’s were heavy throuhout as were strings.

Forgive me, I might have gone a bit overboard with the John Williams comparison. Though I still feel he’s on the road to becoming one of the very good ones. So I’ll stick with what I said to a certain degree.
Ok, so how I compared the two… It’s all in the subtleties of finding the right tunes and moments to play out the emotional cored that will resonate in the audience.
Michael did this very well in LOST, pick up the first album or try and borrow it and listen to the last few pieces, let me know if you are interested in which ones, I’ll give you a better detailed description of them and which numbers to look for his really good work.
Let’s start with the Medal of Honor series, listen to those and tell me how well he did. It sounds like an alternative John Williams score for Saving Private Ryan. It’s brilliant.
Then listen to LOST, season 1 and 2. And then listen to Ratatouille as well as The Incredibles for a very different yet amazingly well crafted score for that movie. It has everything in it. Lots of action, suspense and drama with a very stylish twist to set the Incredibles look and feel in perspective.
He’s able to move far between the spectrum and I think he can pull off this movie without a problem.
He is able to deliver quality in his work and I think he’ll do wonderfully. I can’t wait to hear the opening of this new Star Trek. Though I doubt they will use too much of the old stuff in this new movie, but I am certain they will use many of the memorable tunes used in the old ones to blend into the new one with style…
I’ll try not to hold “Lost” against him Stephen, that show dosnt impress me in the smallest way.

I havnt seen those two films you mentioned but I’ll take your word for it that Giacchino is a good composer…for now..

One thing, I bet the score does use or borrow alot from TOS , you mentioned Medal Of Honer sounding alot like the Saving Private Ryan score. I’m betting JJ pushes Giacchino in the direction of TOS themes. JJ is a huge fan of Twilight Zone and TOS borrowed alot from that show in terms of sound.
We all witnessed how important musical score is in films, Star Wars, Close Encounters,, let’s hope we get a Great score if not it could hurt the film…

Btw, I didn’t pay any attention to the music in MOH.
Too busy trying to not get shot. Haha
And sometimes I turn the music off when I play games. The music is distracting and takes the realisim out of the game. IMO.

Anyway, truthfully, while many don’t like LOST, the score is something else….
Also, MOH is awesome and I know what you mean with the music.
We’ll see in oh say November how the score is… after all that’s when we’ll get the soundtrack for Trek 11.
Lost rocks and so does the music. The scoring for the Incredibles and Ratatouille is great as well.
Really looking forward to seeing what Giacchino can do with the new Star Trek score.
Yea your right Stephan I would throw my sim card. First though I would stand up and cry, “that’s the music from next generation!” and then I would say prob something like “f this! I spit my sim card at thee!” And walk out.

When you say MOH is great, do you mean “music on hold” cause that’s the first thing I was thinking.
As I’ve been reading these comments about the music, I’ve just been thinking about how the music from the original Star Trek series was also used in other shows from Desilu/Paramount at the same time. I know for a fact that I’ve also heard it used in Mission Impossible, and that makes me wonder if reusing it here would be the best thing they could do, or if they might be better served coming up with something new.
