Dang it, Vic. Why do you have to go and be all logical about this sort of thing?? (and kudos for working the word “nadir” in there. I haven’t seen or used that word since english lit in college.)
First, I am a HUGE Stargate fan. Having collected all the seasons of SG1, SGA, and the cartoon Startgate: Infinity, I can say I LOOOVE the show and its concept.
I agree that SG1 should have gone away with RDA, but at the same time am looking forward to the movies to close up the story line left open with Season 10. Personally I think SG1 struggled on for two more seasons to get the record for longest running sci-fi show and usurpping the title from X-files for their 9 seasons.
I think the storyline with Mitchell and Vala could have been a new show, with Sam and Teal’c and Daniel showing up on SGA or guest appearances on this new show.
I agree also on the Gou’ld and the Ori as enemies issue. SG1 battles the Gou’ld, SGA has the Wraith, the new show should have had the Ori.
Do I think a new show would cause the franchise meet the same fate as StarTrek? I could only hope.
The Series.
Voyager.
Next Generation.
DS9.
Enterprise.
And ump-teen movies later, it is still booming.

StarTrek is a LEGACY. Yeah, the shows were ill-fated and the movies are getting long in the tooth, but we still have MILLIONS of people who are proud to dress up and call themselves ‘trekkies’.
I, for one, am geeky enough to want to be part of a Stargate legacy, and be called a ‘Gater’. The Stargate empire has TONS more potential, I just hope they don’t suck it dry before they throw in the towel.

On the other hand, my bi-polar-istic side also says, its like a life-long family dog. She’s old and needs to be put down before she suffers too much. I’ll shed my tears and miss her and she’ll never be forgotten, but it might be for the best.

BTW, they never concluded the love story between O’neill and Carter, dang it!!

“And ump-teen movies later, it[Star Trek] is still booming.”

Well the reruns of older shows and movies are doing all right. And sure, there’s Star Trek 11 on the horizon, but that ALMOST didn’t get made. The only reason it is going forward is because they dumped the old production team that drove the franchise into the abyss and happened to snag a currently “hot” name (J.J. Abrams). We’ll have to see how the new movie does…

“I just hope they don’t suck it dry before they throw in the towel.”

That’s exactly my point. :-)
O’Neill/Carter… yeah, that’s true. On the one hand you HAVE to keep them apart. Any time there’s been an “almost together” couple on a TV series that they allowed to finally hook up, the consequences have always been awful and the show goes downhill. It’s the old story of “having a thing may not be as good as wanting it.” :-) And with Carter going on to Atlantis, I don’t want to see the relationship resolved.

As far as I’m concerned they can allow them to get together when it’s a lock that neither of them will be coming back to any Stargate-themed show after the episode where they finally give in. :-)
And “nadir”, yeah… cool word. ;-)

While you make some good points, as much as it pains me to admit it (I love the series, and wouldn’t mind it going on for a few more seasons), there is one thing stopping Stargate from free-falling to the depths of the latter-day Trek vehicles: the creative team. Unless they develop a seeming desire to run the Stargate universe into the ground (a la Trek’s Braga and Berman), I really wouldn’t mind seeing another spin-off. The premise of Stargate being what it is, there are still a lot of interesting areas to explore.

Karyk,

I *did* mention that specifically up above. :-)

I really was hoping that SG-1 would end with the Stargate program finally going public. I mean, at least if they did that, you could argue that there would be a significant change in the dynamic of the show could be viewed through the lens of a newly aware public on Earth to the sudden realization that the universe just got a lot smaller, so to speak. Maybe that will still happen eventually during Atlantis’ run, but I won’t count on it. There are a few avenues you could take it to make it avoid the Star Trek trap, but it would require some kind of dramatic shift in perspective to give it a reason to exist.

Jersey,

Yeah, that’s a good point (going public). In regards to shifting perspective, I think that’s what they tried to do with “Atlantis” and it’s not working out too badly.

What is the meaning of this, i have reacently heard that there will not be a season 11 of stargate SG-1, how can this be, this show is one of the gratest programes i have ever seen , If not the gratest. is it simply the the cast does not wish to continue to carry on or is it the fact that you are running out of funds that you are not capable of continuing with Stargate SG-1, if this is that case I would gladley start a fund to raise more money and I am sure others feel the same about this as I do.

If the case is that the cast does not want to continue playing in the best TV Show i have ever seen, please try to convince them to stay on as many people are devastated with this news.

I will be willing to speek to them on your behalf, if you could only contact me ( Nicholas James Macmillan ) by any of the following:

Please contact me as soon as possible.
