Marvel Superhero Movies Through 2011!
Written on May 5, 2008 by Jamie Williams
After the huge opening weekend of Iron Man, nobody should be surprised to hear a Shellhead sequel has been greenlit for a summer 2010 release - April 30, 2010 to be exact.
No, ladies and germs, the surprise is that Marvel Films has come outright and announced their entire slate of projects from now to 2011.
In addition to Iron Man 2, Matthew Vaughn's Thor will be unveiled to the world on June 4, 2010. If you recall, that was the one where the first draft of the script was estimated to have cost $300 million(!) to produce.
For 2011, the House of Ideas plans on launching a two-film series, both being released across the summer.
First, there's The First Avenger: Captain America for May 6, 2011. Ugh. Lose the front-half of that title for crying out loud!
And by July 2011, comic-book nerds and dorks alike across the world will rejoice in the release of The Avengers.
That's rights, you'll finally get to see Captain America, Iron Man, Thor & Co. team up to kick... some super villain's butt - I'm guessing Ultron. *Shrugs*
Interestingly, there's absolutely no mention of any Hulk follow-ups.
Speaking of Hulk, it's even more troubling that Marvel Films has still not kicked the campaign for The Incredible Hulk into full-gear, and it's release is only a month away; especially when compared to the year and a half of hard-core marketing on Iron Man.
I think it's obvious that just as Marvel Films knew they had a winner in Iron Man, they know that they don't with The Incredible Hulk.
I mean seriously, how else can you explain their silence regarding that film?!?
My guess is that it is a look-and-see for what becomes of the Hulk. If Marvel makes money on it, we'll see a sequel (or not, depending on if they're using the Hulk in The Avengers). Even that could be the reason for now mention of a sequel-the Hulk will be in The Avengers.
I agree that the title of the Cap movie needs to be changed. Heck, even change the order of the words in that title: "Captain America: The First Avenger." I personally like just "Catain America," but we know that that is not going to happen.
This is good news because these are the types of movies that I enjoy and it is nice to see that we'll be getting them for 3 more years. Don't forget we have Wolverine coming out next year, too. In addition, you KNOW there will be at least ONE more Batman movie with Christian Bale.
Now if we could only get a Daredevil film that doesn't suck. ***sigh***
Jeez, my spelling was horrible in that post. I guess I really need to go to bed. LOL...
This is great news. I'm so stoked that Iron Man was huge I knew it would be.
Cool Jamie but whats with all the harsh terms for us fans, geeks and germs? Lol.
Hulk producers, HEAR ME NOW if there is a scene with Iron Man in Hulk, you really should show just a little glimpes in the next Hulk trailer. It will earn you an extra 50 mil I guarantee it.
You can pay me later all be at Comic Con.
I dont think RDJ will be donning the armor.
i think he will just be showing up as Tony Stark .
But we shall see.
I believe the cameo is online somewhere.
(IMO) Hulk needs to capitalise off Iron Mans success. Even if its Tony Stark.
And I mean tease it in the trailer. That's where he will have the most impact.

Lukewarm. That's my reaction to that announcement. Somehow I can't develop much enthusiasm to some of these projects.
Why Iron Man may be a good adaptation (mostly due to good actors and characterisation), the rest of the Marvel superheroes doesn't strike me as very interesting.
Now, fanboys stay calm! I've read my fair share of the 70s and 80s Marvel stuff and especially these characters did not work for me. Sorry, but there's way better material in the Marvel library.
Regarding the new Hulk-movie I don't have a good feeling about the way its release and advertising is handled. Looks like they don't have much trust in their own product. Bad sign!
The first Hulk-movie was a good example what happens if you give a rather dumb comic to a smart director. Wrong choice? Then check out AVP2 where it's exactly the other way round!

I feel reticent about it all .
remember how Sony planned 7 spider Man films?
Does anybody believe that is set in stone now?
But looking on the bright side ,
I would like to see a Captain America film, a Thor film
and An Avengers film that gives each of the characters a chance to shine without the special effects drowning them out.The long awaited Luke Cage fim would be nice as well as The Immortal Iron fist.
Last I heard, the Robert Downey Jr. cameo will appear after the credits of THE INCREDIBLE HULK (i.e. the Samuel L. Jackson cameo in IRON MAN).
Studios announce plans/release date for sequels in advance of the new installment's opening often.
The fact that there's nothing being said about a HULK sequel mixed with their lack of promotion for THE INCREDIBLE HULK so far is NOT a good sign imo.
Marvel was already deep into planning an IRON MAN sequel before its release.
That Ed Norton story REALLY hurt them.
Jamie.
I thing you guys are reading this all wrong. Look 1. Incredible Hulk still has alot of CGI work left to finish the film.
2. This is Ironman(Marvel Studio first tentpole ever) first full week, so after the second or third week Hulk marketing will sky-rocket.
3. There has barely been any major marketing for TDK, Hellboy2, or Indy 4 SOOOO BE PATIENCE!
With this being the second tentpole for Marvel Studio, I promise you there will be a major marketing camping by mid-May.:)
Also forgot to add, my money's on "Incredible Hulk" kicking major silver screen @ss!
technically mid may is next thursday may 15th
I hope the promotion starts this week myself.
since we have alot of Marvel fans here,
which character that hasent been on screen yet would you like to write, direct, or star as?
Write your own marvel movie !
Maybe some of you already have scripts !
Hey all... new here...but I am really surprised with Hulk and IM so close in release dates no one has mentioned Hulk VS. IM with IM in the Hulk Buster Armor...just a thought
To Zar, "WHAT?" Marvel characters are the most interesting heroes ever, they are very thought out and have very realisitic stories. I love Marvel and DC both but I tend to lean towards Marvel more, haven't you read civil war? it was awsome, I think that would be a great movie. One story that I really loved was in "Thor" the "Doom" saga a few years back, written and drawn by Walter Simonson, check it out, It reminded me of the Lord of the Rings, It would be cool if they used that storyline in the "Thor" movie. That is just some samples of the Marvel stories and characters that I really enjoy, old and new! I'm just happy they are hitting the big screen, but the real trick is getting it right!
They didn't mention anything about the Hulk because they want to see what happens in the boxoffice first. In the webcast yesterday, they said if the Hulk does well then the plans can change and also to expect a Hulk cameo in Iron Man 2.
What happened to the Ant-Man movie? Not that I had a lot of interest (it was intruiging though!), but it's appeared in all the forecasts.
What about Spider-Man and Fantastic Four sequels? I also thought I read Ghost Rider had a sequel coming out. Wolverine, Magneto?
There's a sequel I'd be interested in, Jamie. A follow-up to this article. Sorry, but I'm kinda disappointed in a headline that implies full slate information doesn't seem to be comprehensive. Even if some that the rumor mill has included, have been nixed, let's hear it.
Jimmy, if you check IMDB, Ant Man is in development.
No word on Spider Man yet.
Fantastic 4 is on permanant Hiatus (done)
Ghost Rider in development.
Wolverine coming out soon and Magneto is also in development. (However I doubt they'll do it now with The Hobbit coming up).
Brimg 'em on! I'm pumped for any Marvel movie after IM.
What Marvel movies I would like to see made? Where to start?
Black Panther
Captain Mar-Vell
Power Man
Iron Fist
reimage of Daredevil
reimage of Electra
Cable
Shang Chi
Dr. Strange
Adam Warlock
etc., etc., etc.
Do you think they'd really sell out by adding in some new avengers... could you imagine Tobey and Hugh playing Spidey and Wolverine in that movie too, hah. Maybe for Avengers 2.
Does this mean Ironman is a duo rather than a trio?
"What about Spider-Man and Fantastic Four sequels? I also thought I read Ghost Rider had a sequel coming out. Wolverine, Magneto?"
In response to that. These films are not part of the MARVEL Studios properties. For instance, Spider-Man is a SONY Films property right now. So, don't be worried about those films. This announcement is just for what MARVEL itself will be producing.
I was JUST about to write a response to Jimmy when Mark basically said it for me. Thanks.
Jamie.
The two top movie weekends for nonsequels star Marvel characters.
I think that says it all about how marvel movies resonate ,
not only with comic book fans but with the average moviegoer as well.
If only Captain American were more marketable in other countries, they wouldn't have to do that silly "First Avenger" business. My bf joked that they should come up with a clever acronym like they did with G.I. Joe to make it more palatable to the world market...but something tells me that idea has been seriously pitched by someone, somewhere.

Kahless - speaking of Black Panther, wasn't Wesley Snipes trying to get that moving in the mid-90s? Now that the Blade trilogy is done (and peaked at Blade 2 sadly), He's free as soon as he pays his taxes.
I really don't like either FF movies, but I like how they introduced the Surfer, primed for his own movie. If all goes as planned with The Avengers, this would be fantastic.
Hulk will fail (ie. not be picked up for a sequel) because the hype isn't there. It's known by everyone on this site. The movie may be good, but it won't pass the box office sales test. Maybe it's for the better, bring him on in the Avengers! But Norton probably won't be in it, oh well, just have him Hulked out evertime he's on screen - not comics material, but it's a big movie. Go for it
the real tragedy about Hulk is it could a decent film, maybe not Iron Man caliber but decent.
If it fails it will be largely because the studio didnt support it .
its almost as if they think the public doesnt like the Hulk.
maybe they think the previous film soured the public on the character,
so the best strategy in their minds is to sneak him under the radar.
Yeah Gary ,that's the way it looks to me as well.
Infighting has had an effect on the promotional part. Allmost as if were seeing a private war going on between Norton and the Studio.
Ironically Hulk like. :•o
The Black Panther would be great, but to bad Wesley Snipes(my favorite actor) will be too old after 3 years. :(
Cap is what I'm look forward to next. Matthew McConaughey would be a perfect pick for the role. Anyone remember him in Reign of Fire(opposite of Christian Bale)? Plus he has the charm and the look and the acting chops to hold his own against RDJ or Norton in the Avengers.

Panda
Yes he was pushing for it. By the time he gets out of jail, he may be too old to play T'Challa but he could play T'Chaka, T'Challa's father. But who knows; they got Robert Downey to play Tony Stark, and Downey is up there in age.
I just checked wikipedia and RDJ isn't that old after all, only 43. Wesley Snipes will be 48 in 3 years, so he may be a stretch to play Black Panther.
I have a feeling Snipes won't serve all 3 years.
He'll prob be out in less than a year.
Robert Downey Jr can play T'Chaka AND T'Challa.
(Did you see his new movie promo?)
The movie where he plays an actor in Vietnam posing as a black man? Yeah, I saw that and he looks very convincing.
This is great news. Bring it on!
I can't wait for the Cap movie, Iron Man 2, and Avengers!
Too bad we have to wait 2-3 years tho.
I can do without out a Thor film, but if they do Thor, I hope they do the original/classic comics' version with Don Blake. :-)
Too bad WB/DC can't set up their movies in the same universe like this. If they ever did a JLA film it would have to be with a Batman and Superman who are from the same reality and not from the BB and SR U.
Yeah KEL, Marvel is making DC look like newbees.
i heard the thor movie was going to take place on Asgard.
They are going for a Lord of The Rings type epic.
Adrian: Matthew McConaughey is the *exact* person I have been talking about for Cap, too. He is built, blonde, good actor and has just enough "down home country boy" thing going already.
I would go with Djimon Hounsou (from Gladiator and Blood Diamond) for T'challa nowadays.
As a side note, I am getting a bit fed-up with all these multi-line titles things. Personally, I would go the other direction and call the Captain America film something like "America," period.
McConaughey is a HORRIBLE choice for Cap. One of the worst choices, he'd be worse than Reb Brown. Just my opinion as a longtime Cap fan. Keep his ass away from Cap I say. If he could play any superhero it would be Booster Gold for DC.
Why all the hate on McConaughey as Cap? If he beefed up I think he'd be great. He's got "All-American" written all over him and he can play the ultra good guy really well. Did you guys see him in "Contact?"
Vic
Exactly, Vic. I'm sold on picking Matt. You will be surprise at how hardened, heroic, and commanding, but charming he can be. KEL, remember people didn't think RDJ good enough for Ironman and look how that turned out! Remember "Reigh of Fire"? Like I said early in this forum, KEL buddy, rent "Reign of Fire" again and take a look at Matt performance. That's Cap in battle mode which is perfect to me.
He holds his on against "Batman" Bale in that film and is the last bad @ss in England on that film. Just given him a open-minded chance.:)
(IMO) Matthew is too redneck and not quite buff enough.
He was good in that horrible film "riegn of fire" but that was years ago when it seemed he had more passion for acting. (Too me) it looks like he's a slacker in the choices he makes in films and he's lost his edge. (IMO).
I also have doubts about him doing sequels.
Good choice would that blond guy from American Gladiators.
He's an unknown and I think that's what this film needs.
I would give Matt a chance but I don't see him as being the best choice.
"McConaughey is a HORRIBLE choice for Cap"
preach on bro. I don't hate him, I just don't like him for a superhero type.
Vic - I did like him in Contact, which is one of my favorite movies of all time. he's just not a superhero.
Get an unknown and sign him for a 5 movie option
Sorry you guys, looks like I was smoking crack on that paragraph.
790: Matthew's southern draw is perfect for Cap, because it is so uniquely American like John Wayne. No other country sounds that way. Matthew is also very witty, confident, and humbled. He can also bulk up, like Bale, Jackman and RDJ did. Use stuntmen for the acrobatics and martial arts. He's also acted opposite of Pacino and Sam Jackson and held his on.
Also guys, Matthew has enough star power (equal to that of RDJ's and Norton's) to bring in both international and domestic non-comic fans, and especially LOTS OF WOMEN to help sale Cap as a very strong tentpole.
Well I like the guy, I guess but Captain America with a southern drawl....?
I just don't know what the fans of the comic would say about that.
Oh yeah, check out KELs comments.
Adrian, have you seen that blond Gladiator guy from the new American Gladiators show?
He would be perfect. They could even save a few million by not casting McConaHEY.
I think there looking at Matthew to bring in the ladies.
I say this in closing, if the script sucks it won't matter who's in the suit.
790: Your right about the script, but with Marvel at the helm, I'm not too worried.
FYI guys: It more believeable that a "country" boy could throw that shield than a northerner!
KEL: LOL, Booster Gold, yeah your right, but I think ANY American male would take pride and honor in having the chance to be Steve Rogers the one and only CAPTAIN AMERICAN. I also have a lot of love and pride for the Captian too. Always picked him in the Avengers arcade game and just about teared up with anger that Marvel "killed" him with a stupid shot-gun!X'
Actually, I think Matthew is buffest in "One for the Money," and it is a more recent film. That was the feature that first inspired me to think of him. To be honest, casting a no name that likely can't act would be a death knell as bad as a poor script. Getting the attention of actors closer to the A-list is can help maintain quality throughout.
"casting a no name that likely can't act would be a death knell"
a) that's why they need an unknown who CAN act
b) an A-lister who can't act just as bad if not worse in long run
Matt is too goofy. He was ok in Reign of Fire but I still don't see it.
Isn't Matt too old? I mean come on the comic version of Captain America was a young recrut in the army that they basically use as a test subject. Hence then he becomes the ultimate super soldier.
(Right? Am I smoking crack on this one?)
MaconaHEY dosnt work for this film unless there only doing it for the ladies.
And yes I'm spelling his name wrong for effect. ;-/
I would go with Djimon Hounsou (from Gladiator and Blood Diamond) for T'challa nowadays.
I have thought about him as well; wonderful actor. But I was watching Star Trek: Enterprise the other day and the actor who plays Ensign Mayweather, IMHO, would make a superb T'Challa. The only thing is, does he have the acting ability?
Good choice would that blond guy from American Gladiators.
He's an unknown and I think that's what this film needs.
Posted by: 790 at May 8, 2008 12:58 PM
790, we think too much alike. I don't watch American Gladiator but I saw the ad with the blond guy and I immediately said, "That's Captain America".
You need to stop reading my mind. :o)
Matt McCon. is a wonderful actor but as Cap Amer., I don't know. Who would play Steve Rogers before he takes the supersoldier serum?
Power Man -
I think Michael Jai White would make the perfect Power Man.
Iron Fist -
You have to get Ray Park for that one.
Shang Chi -
Tony Jaa would be my first choice. Most would pick Jet Li.
Thor -
Tough one. Maybe the guy from American Gladiator, if they give him acting lessons.
Lol John, yeah I don't watch Gladiators ether (really I don't). But there's a 100 ft tall banner hanging on the NBC building here in Burbank with that arian looking dude. He's perfect for Captain America.
How much acting lessons do you need to pull off Cap? I think he can do it and the guy would prob become a huge star like Arnold or Dolph Lungrin (spell check that last name). ?
790,
the man's name is Michael O'hearn, and he CAN act (a little, anyway). He even played Superman in the Superman/Batman: World's Finest fan film (which is AWESOME!!!):
http://youtube.com/watch?v=PIWskgVx_v0
Great guy, IMO.
Not so sure for Cap tho. Remember, whoever plays Cap will have to be EXTREMELY thin/frail before the super soldier project, then totally pumped looking to be a convincind physically perfect human being, what Captain America is supposed to be.
Vic, Adrian,
sorry about the knee jerk reaction to Mconaughey as Cap the other day. He just didn't strike me as Cap. Mostly cuz I don't think he can do serious and don't really like him as an actor. He has the build tho, and I will check out those flix you mentioned to give a better opinion. :-)
Adrian, I don't remember ANY negative reaction to RDJ's casting as IM. :-)
pardon the typos in my comments, I'm in a bit of a rush.
I have read that Djimon Honsou is defintely being seriously considered for the role of the Black Panther. I think Matt Damon would make a great Captain America. For Cap to work overseas he's going to have to be a conspiracy type movie with Cap bringing down a rogue organization within the US government.. Sorry but America is a dirty word overseas and that does not mean I support that line of thinking. I did live in the middle east and Europe for eight years.
Iron Man worked because of the quality of the actors they chose. If you place bad actors in these roles then the movies will get a bad result. Anyone remember The Punisher with Dolph L.
I think the guy who played Seraph in the MAtrix Reloaded would be an ideal Shang Chi. Matthew McC would be a good choice for Hawkeye in the Avengers movie. Thor is a tough one.. Need a guy built like a brick house who has good acting chops.

Collin Chou was the guy that played Seraph in the Matrix. He would be awesome as Shang Chi with Chow Yung Fat as Fu Man Chu.
To Kel
If you think Matthew McC can't act check out A Time To Kill...and I thought Reign of Fire was a great flick as well.
I think the guy who played Seraph in the MAtrix Reloaded would be an ideal Shang Chi
Greenknight (or should I call you Sir Gawain), I didn't think of him. Yes, he would make a wonderful Shang Chi.
Vladimir Kulich would physically be ideal for Thor although I am not sure how old he is now but he is the actor who played Buliwyf(sounds like Beowolf) in the 13 th warrior with Antonio Banderas. He looked like Thor in the movie and he was a Norse Warrior in that movie.
I always thought Vladimir Kulich was good for Thor, too, but he is probably too old now. Last thing I saw him in was Smokin' Aces in which he portrayed "The Swede."
Matt Damon finally earned my respect in the last Bourne movie. Before that he was far too baby-faced for me to really consider the possibility of him to be even close to the same league as a Bond level character. He is beginning to show some maturity and was good in The Departed, too.
His only problem is height/size. He is supposed to be 5'10" but he never comes off that size to me. Maybe it is just who he is cast with. I would need to see him in a costume and acting before really determining if he could command the respect that the character should have.
People keep talking about the 'America' in Captain America. I know this is about international box office $$, but adding 'The First Avenger' to the title doesn't change who he is, and I doubt it will add much interest internationally. Studio execs can be such idiots.
I'm interested to see what Ironman turns out globally. There was quite a bit of America talk (different tone than a Cap film I'm sure), I doubt it would turn off international viewers.
Leave Cap alone. And GI Joe, and Justice League of America for that matter
i know i'm a bit late but, greenknight, casting is not always the problem. a good example would be all 3 x-men movies. the only ones they got right with the casting was patrick stewart as xavier, and kelsey grammar as the beast. the reason why the punisher with dolph lungren wasn't all that had nothing to do with the casting, but the fact that the storyline sucked. for instance the last punisher movie they made (i think in 2003 or 4) was hot. that was the one with john travolta as the bad guy. the storline, the plot, the cast, all made the whole movie enjoyable. funny thing is i don't remember it hitting the big screen. I saw it on dvd. Now there's talk about a sequel to that one. the messed up thing is that they got some guy who looks like steven segal playing frank castle. why can't they just get some chisled dude with a square rectagular face, who looks like someone no one wants to mess with. the studio execs never seem to cast someone who looks like the comic book character. for instance, they should have gotten iman to play storm, instead they chose halle berry. but they went with berry because of her sex appeal. plus, when the first x-men came out halle berry was beginning to become a hot commodity. but regardless what anyone says, sex appeal doesn't always sell, especially when you're making a movie out of comic book characters. i personally care more about the actor looking like the character, then think about if they can act or not. if they can't, then that's what rehersals are for.
Quicksilver (son of Magneto LOL), you are right about Berry. Storm was from Africa, and Berry doesn't have the accent or the look of an African. Iman would have been a better choice. I also think that the guy who played Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) was perfect; and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique...OHHHH MAAAN!!
Berry is a prima-donna on top of it all, too, and was apparently the cause for Jackman to get an even bigger head on himself and James Marsden to nearly up and quit before X-3 was completed (he was fed up with both of them, I guess).
I even thought Gina Torres would be as good a choice as Berry. When Berry declined to wear contacts I just wanted to beat her to death. *I* wanted to see the Ororo that Claremont/Byrne designed, period.
My only issue with Mystique was the complete butchering of her original character (okay, maybe only 75% butchered). At some point I just had to sit back and enjoy the movies for what they were, but I still think the first one was pretty "meh."
Alan Cumming was great but I guess he was not ever going to do a character that required as much make-up as Nightcrawler did ever again.
I would personally have liked to see more Colossus; he was too cool in my book. So, if they ever do another X movie, we can expect to see more Halle Berry as Storm leading the team with Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Iceman, Angel and bonus people.
On the subject of Captain America, I have been really examining Matt Damon as a potential. The one thing I found interesting, though, is that Matthew McConaughey is only a year older than he is :P (Damon is sorta like me, doesn't even remotely look his age [38]).
